If you were to tell me that I spelled something wrong or forgot to use punctuation, I would probably tell you to bite me or something in a joking manner. What I dislike is when people openly nitpick and criticize another person based on their grammar; as if it makes them so much better than the person who spelled something wrong or whatever. I think it's rude of people to be judgmental like that. And I know what you mean by seeing things that are so obviously wrong and wanting to fix them. It bothers me too, but I don't say anything about it because I want to be polite.

And you're right. We probably do notice it more than the average user would because it is our job. I have no problem noting that whenever I find errors in a person's conversation. But it never said anywhere in the rules that people had to use proper grammar all the time. It never even said we had to use proper grammar period; just that it was recommended that we not use chat speak which is more than a reasonable request. As of right now, I think that the writing of the users here on Menewsha is more than tolerable. Until it gets more congested, I won't worry about it if I see someone who doesn't follow the recommendations.

Note - I always spell recommend wrong. The same with any of its variations. Thank god for the thing in Firefox that fixes words for me, or I would be going around looking like an idiot : D

  • I'm never judgmental because there's a grammatical mistake or a spelling mistake.. when it's constant and borderline chatspeak to chatspeak do I get a bit judgmental.. It's a simple request to use regular English isn't it? I tend to ignore them if I can do it without seeming rude.. I just don't actually want to read what they type.

I know. And I don't want you to think that I was talking about you. I was actually stereotyping grammar Nazis in general.

Like I said, I know you and I understand. I don't like when people use chatspeak, or even come close to it. But I deal with it, and I read it anyways. If it gets to a point where it starts to continually bother me, I'll request for them to change their writing, but its ultimately up to them : D

  • Yeah I know, sometimes it's bad to stereotype!! :evil:

    But yeah, even with people I don't know I'd just sorta point it out in a kind manner that also gives off that I'm just making fun though in reality I'm not. :lol: Many have thanked me for it too others just ignore the comment.

    Only one person I came across that used chatspeak I really talked to for a short bit until it got to the point that I said not at all rudely "Sorry, I don't have a problem with you but just the way you speak and it's really getting to me.."

    She checked herself and changed it for me... Dunno there's a lot out there who can be great in keeping literate but choose not too.. People are truly lazy these days.

Azureile 09-21-2007 04:51 AM

I understand your point, but we can't blame everyone for typos. xD

I mean, I always forget to capitalize my "I"s. It's not that I don't mean to, but I type quickly, and little things like that just tend to go unnoticed? >____>;

Some people typelikethis, but it's usually not always. Just when we're being funny? I guess? xD

I guess I'm just glad to be away from all those "bumps" and "p05st3rz f0r g000ld3rzzzz!!!" ((that took me forever to type out. >____>; Forgive me for making your eyes hurt?))

  • Then you must dislike me? I'm quite the grammar nazi and sometimes I can't help myself when it's so obvious that there's a mistake.... I try my best not to but my fingers act on their own I swear.

    It's a pet peeve of mine that I dislike seeing improper grammar. Mene has never been perfect but the literacy IS slipping... We notice it more as mods/cms because it's our jobs to be looking at peoples posts closely sometimes.

Listen, I'm not rude about it. I have not yet on Mene said anything to someone directly, as so far, no one has actually been that bad. This was more a general complaining, but I wouldn't just rudely sneer at a person in a thread, telling them that they are 'lesser' than me. That's plain bitchy. D:

CrepsleyKabob 09-21-2007 05:55 PM

Hmm, I usually try to type correctly, but sometimes when I'm hurrying while typing I don't reach the shift key fast enough, or I make mistakes without taking the time to correct them.

I can see how you could be annoyed about bad grammar, but people here are still really good about it, so yeah ^^;

Feralin 09-21-2007 06:44 PM

As long as I can understand what people are saying, I'm not all that bothered whether they're perfectionists are not. D;

I'm not saying that you are. I'm stereotyping the typical Grammar Nazi, because that's all I've ever known. I've never met a Grammar Nazi who wouldn't openly criticize people through their writing styles.

  • So as long as I don't say it aloud, and just think it fiercely in my head, I'm just someone who gets miffed over bad grammar? : D

Aero 09-22-2007 08:04 AM

  • Yeah! I've been seeing that too. ToT I don't really rate them by it, but it's sometimes pretty annoying. o-o;

    Pearl: Yepp. ;D

jellysundae 09-22-2007 06:32 PM

I often correct people's posts if the spelling is really bad :lol:

But I think the chatspeak issue isn't that bad here. People might use it at first because they're used to using it elsewhere. but because no-one else does they'd soon get out of the habit, Plus once people realise that they get more gold for typing the whole word instead of a messed up abbreviation they soon change their posting habits!

Ayx 09-22-2007 06:50 PM

I'm no grammar nazi for certain, I like typing in chatspeak mostly with my friends, if people don't approve, they can simply just not look at my post, simple as that, however when it's something serious or something around those circumstances, I try to type as correctly as possible. However, as my brother stated eariler, not everyone has english as their first language, I for certain have been in Puerto Rico for 9 years now, I slowly forget my english grammar. But I certainly have no problem when people type wrong, we shouldn't judge them on that, at least I don't. :3

Rusalka 09-22-2007 08:34 PM

Ayx - We're not really judging and especially not when English isn't a first language ... we're not even saying Menewsha is perfect just that what we had seen as the literacy level from the beginning compared to now is slipping. And not only because of people that don't speak English normally but people choosing to use chatspeak.

I've had a person talk with me in chatspeak (that case is rather rare... it hurts my eyes and makes me cringe) but at some point I made a comment I don't normally like chatspeak and right away she turned literate because I had said that so.. it's not as if everyone who knows how to be literate keeps to it and a lot who use chatspeak most likely knows at least basic grammar.

Hell I've seen a person who used chatspeak use proper punctuation and capitalization.

Luumi 09-22-2007 09:21 PM

A lot of Menewsha's newcomers are chatspeakers, but I've noticed they seem to leave around their first or second week because of how "hard" it is to earn gold and get items. Also, a lot of them even decide to be literate while they're on here. Besides, I believe Mene will always have a thriving, grammar-loving population. ^^

Teeth 09-23-2007 09:35 PM

Umm. Yowza I haven't noticed anything.
Sorry?

(:

yanyan13 09-23-2007 11:30 PM

  • Well, as long as there's no chatspeak or anything of the sort, small mistakes on grammar does not bother me at all. ^_^

Enniel 09-28-2007 04:48 AM

i know my grammar, and i know my punctuation..and SOMETIMES i take the time to make it look good..but for the most part its just online so i dont care very much...i do care when words are mispelled and everything is in acronyms :?
lol
wtf
omg (i really hate this one XD)

kimu 09-29-2007 02:41 AM

I can spell really well for you if you want, but Id rather not. Dx Tis is how thy wanta talk.

It's just the internet too, and like said MANEH times before, people arn't perfect. [ Pet peeves are anoyying huh? xD ]

And and, I havn't noticed any kind of chatspeak around here at all, maybe Im just not on enough. D :

So anyways judging on meh typing, im lazy for wanting to type like that? I just wanna type like that for the heck of it. Like how people chatspeak, it takes a while to write out chatspeak, at least in my experience.

Justice 09-30-2007 03:43 PM

I do love me some spelling and grammar, but it doesn't bother me all that much when others don't use it.
I'm not going to shove grammar lessons down anyones throats, or anything.

Livia 10-07-2007 12:15 AM

I can't be a nazy when it comes to a grammar.I'm Portuguese >-<.

I have some problems in writing everything in the right place and spelled well.. But I try to do my best. :nods:

Flying Wings 10-07-2007 12:28 AM

I personally don't care, I don't really have to spot check my sentences because I have spell-check. ^^

Karine 10-07-2007 01:51 AM

The only thing i don't care about are my i's. i always make them lowercase. Chat speak like
Kan u bee mi freind??
kinda bugs me. xD

orange 10-07-2007 05:39 AM

:lol: well....I do know and use good grammar when I feel like it, but a lot of the time I like to talk all stupid and stuff when I'm hyper X'DD
I don't know why...I just do o___o;;

rockmyworld182 10-07-2007 09:42 AM

yups thats right .. the grammar of other people are kinda for kids that doesnt go to school yet XDD

Da-Eh 10-11-2007 07:22 PM

Chatspeak annoys me...but I'd NEVER flame someone just because of it.
If I can't understand a post, I don't read it...but I'm not going to be mean to someone because they spelled something wrong, or their grammar wasn't perfect.
-Shrug-

Solitare 10-12-2007 06:11 AM

I feel that people are getting lazy about grammer & manners. =/ Perhaps it's because of always being in a hurry as so many of us are?
