  • Okay, if you think I'm a bit of a Grammar Nazi, you'd be right. : D
For that is what I am.

Anyway, it's one of the reasons why I left/despise Gaia, and now, the Mene standard seems to be slipping somewhat. >_>

Has anyone else noticed new Menewshans using less-than-perfect grammar? Like less capitalisation, spacing.... generally sounding more retarded?

This community used to be perfect in that respect. D:

Tyler 09-20-2007 07:45 PM

Hun nobody is a grammar god. Me myself have trouble using strict gramar yet most of us don't use American english as our native language Some people like me have spanish, Japanese and english of course i understand that you would prefer super grammar but some people are even under an age where their grammar is not all that.

-Also does not this belong in the literature spot? Though i might be wrong.

Some Random Randomness 09-20-2007 08:02 PM

Too true what Tyler said.

I am an English major, but I don't have perfect grammar. It's just something we can't strive for perfection for when people have to talk and want to get everything said in as little time as possible.

And we can't hate everyone just because they're not great in English. ^__^

Queen Fool 09-20-2007 08:11 PM

No one's perfect. Ever.

But I agree, the general level of intelligence has dropped a little.

Sizzla 09-20-2007 08:23 PM

I don't think you can expect everyone on the site to be completely and utterly perfect in regards to grammar and spelling.

As long as there's no chatspeak and most people are doing their best to get their grammar and spelling correct, I'm not bothered by it that much.

Sometimes even I forget to capitalize a word here and there, and I certainly don't chat on forums the same way I'd write a paper for school or write a story for work. And I definitely don't hold you guys to having good grammar -- because some of the stories I edit at work have horrible grammar and the people writing them are 40+ years old!

So yeah, I haven't really seen to much of a downward trend in bad grammar and spelling. I'm still quite pleased with the way we're keeping chatspeakers and spammers out of the community. You just can't expect everyone to be perfect. :D

AkashaHeartilly 09-20-2007 08:28 PM

There is a reason i failed even english 150 3 times.
I'm a horrible person with spelling and grammar. The new firefox has become my new friend for this reason of helping me with spelling. i'm a horrible speller, horrible at grammar and horrible typer. But I try my best to do well.
Added that mot the time it's from head to keyboard.

Trinitydoll 09-20-2007 08:29 PM

I have improved a lot on my grammar since I started chatting online with people from English speaking countries but sometimes Im just tired and forget some punctuation here and there or maybe I am in a rush and make mistakes.
I try to tolerate people who is not that perfect but I agree that from the time I joined here I have seen that grammar decrease a bit, maybe because of the arrival of young kids and so well as I am a teacher I have to understand this is their play space, not school.

Secret 09-20-2007 08:34 PM

  • I think a lot of the users try to use proper grammar and punctuation. Something to keep in mind, is that not all Menewsha members have English as a first language. I've never seen anything on here that was unacceptable as far as grammar. I think everyone here tries to be as literate at they can. Sometimes, you have to accept that not everyone is perfect, or knows all the English language rules.

Steve the Garden Hose 09-20-2007 08:50 PM

  • Well, I agree with you somewhat.
But people have a freedom of speech.
But Steve still hates too see "u, i, wat" and the others.
    But he always uses "teh"

Teh is the most awesome word ever :D

Rusalka 09-20-2007 08:52 PM

I too am a grammar nazi and it's a pet peeve of mine to see so many people with such horrible grammar. Though I too have bad grammar... I try to fix it yes every time I read what I type I find so many grammar mistakes it's not even funny...

As a CM now.. I've seen so much mistakes I sometimes would like to go edit nazi on some people to show them what true grammar is all about. I've seen everything and it's not funny.. Mene's literacy levels are going down a notch and the more I see it the more it saddens me. :(

Sizzla 09-20-2007 09:22 PM

Please don't stab me Kale~ I just thought it was amusing...and I know you're a good sport. :D <3

"I've seen so many mistakes, I sometimes..."

I <3333 Grammar! XD

Otohime 09-20-2007 09:23 PM

Hilarious you should post this, seeing as the majority for Mene users also frequent Gaia... :'D

Ithir 09-20-2007 09:37 PM

It's to be expected as more people come to Mene.
But, really, at least we're pretty well off as far as comprehensibility goes.
And if chatspeakers come, we can always hide somewhere. (Like behind these giant fans. Hmm...)

Yeah 09-20-2007 09:43 PM

I try not to be too judgementel ( sp?) about grammar and spelling. While I try to use proper grammar and spelling, I also understand that some people just aren't that great at for whatever reason and some use a different language normally. When people start using "chat speak", that is really annoying, I can't half understand what is being talked about when I see that.

kuroneko13 09-20-2007 10:31 PM

Yeah I dislike chat speak myself but to judge peoples grammar would be hypocritical some people aren't just the best of spellers i being one of them but you should just care about your own grammar an don't so much about everyone else if you understand the point of what they are saying then don't worry.

Moofin 09-20-2007 10:48 PM

I somewhat agree. It's true that we're not all perfectly literate ut at least most people in Mene TRY. In Gaia the bar has slipped quite a bit so you have over 60% of the people not even trying to use proper grammer..and spelling.

Tre Le Coco 09-21-2007 01:49 AM

hm? i never use proper grammer xD i just make sure i spell words out correctly ^^

im one of those people who would sent 3 text messages out just because i don't abbreviate words down xDDDD; hehe

Hehe  *stabs*
Wasn't me!! Twas her!! *points at some random girl in passing*

I don't know what my excuse was for that.. Oh NO!! I'm picking up habits from the people with poor literacy no!! -_-

mangacatgirl 09-21-2007 03:22 AM

Perhaps I haven't been here long enough... But for as long as I've been here, Menewsha has never been 'Perfect' in the aspect of grammar. Perhaps you are simply noticing it more now, because of the increase of activity and users.

Seiki Nova 09-21-2007 03:24 AM

I disagree with you. This community has never been a perfect site for grammar like you have said it was in times passed. I think that the standards for grammar and stuff are set higher here because of the gold system, but that doesn't mean people will follow those standards.

And if it's slipping, that's fine. The rules don't say "Use proper grammar all the time or we'll hate you." With the new users coming, it will be harder to keep them all from talking like Super Noobs from Gaia. Because that is where they are coming from, and what they are used to.

So to me, the worst thing I could find (other than chat speak) is a grammar nazi who chooses to nitpick mistakes that people make when they speak with another person. All I can say is get over it. I don't have a problem with it, and I don't think a lot of other people will mind if words are misspelled or a few punctuation marks are missing.

/end rant.

Zweres 09-21-2007 03:25 AM

  • :S I don't think it's perfect in any way, as long as they do the basics (capitalization, punctuation, and at least looked like they tried to spell), I don't mind it. Typos do happen.

D8 It happens, every site doesn't have perfect grammar. I think Menewsha's grammar is better than reading Gaia's posts, but then we have to take Gaia's size into comparison

  • Then you must dislike me? I'm quite the grammar nazi and sometimes I can't help myself when it's so obvious that there's a mistake.... I try my best not to but my fingers act on their own I swear.

It's a pet peeve of mine that I dislike seeing improper grammar. Mene has never been perfect but the literacy IS slipping... We notice it more as mods/cms because it's our jobs to be looking at peoples posts closely sometimes.

No no, I love you Kale. But that's because I know you?

If you were to tell me that I spelled something wrong or forgot to use punctuation, I would probably tell you to bite me or something in a joking manner. What I dislike is when people openly nitpick and criticize another person based on their grammar; as if it makes them so much better than the person who spelled something wrong or whatever. I think it's rude of people to be judgmental like that. And I know what you mean by seeing things that are so obviously wrong and wanting to fix them. It bothers me too, but I don't say anything about it because I want to be polite.

And you're right. We probably do notice it more than the average user would because it is our job. I have no problem noting that whenever I find errors in a person's conversation. But it never said anywhere in the rules that people had to use proper grammar all the time. It never even said we had to use proper grammar period; just that it was recommended that we not use chat speak which is more than a reasonable request. As of right now, I think that the writing of the users here on Menewsha is more than tolerable. Until it gets more congested, I won't worry about it if I see someone who doesn't follow the recommendations.

Note - I always spell recommend wrong. The same with any of its variations. Thank god for the thing in Firefox that fixes words for me, or I would be going around looking like an idiot : D

I actually have to agree with mangacatgirl on this one. I don't believe that it was or ever will be 100% perfect. I'm a grown woman who has terrible punctuation. Then again, I am not writing an essay to be graded for school. I am merely chatting and responding to things that interest me.

I have no problem with anyone correcting my writing for my RPing if it needs it (which is usually does) but I don't expect anyone to correct my speech. It doesn't make me less intelligent that I don't always know when to put a semicolon vs a comma.

  • I'm never judgmental because there's a grammatical mistake or a spelling mistake.. when it's constant and borderline chatspeak to chatspeak do I get a bit judgmental.. It's a simple request to use regular English isn't it? I tend to ignore them if I can do it without seeming rude.. I just don't actually want to read what they type.
