I don't consider myself a geek and I'm not an anime lover. I just like talking to people from different places and I like dressing up the avi's. If you think about it, the only difference between these sites and sites like facebook and myspace is the avi's and the fact that people tend to come together more.

Avatar sites

I cannot believe I am reading this as its very narrow-minded, biased and arrogant to state that *geeks* only use sites like this. Aside from the facts that I never use labels and stereotypes anyway as I do NOT believe in them and I never will. I am one thing and one thing only, genuine and very artistic.

Geek, and nerd is about the same meaning.

nerd-1. a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2. an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.

geek-1. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, esp. one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
2. a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)

look at the thesaurus on Nerd the definition is GEEK....read your theasuarus and dictionary more often people, so you know the similarities that are the same meaning but a different word. Like death and demise, casualty, decease, innihilation, etc.

Oh my friends and family know that I am on these types of sites. And they don't care; and I don't care what they think. It does not affect me, and if it makes me a geek or nerd so be it, life is not always going out and get drunk and party and wake up with different people and get std. Edit: Oh and I love anime.

I wouldn't say that I'm embarrassed to say that I'm on avatar sites so much that I don't particularly want my offline friends to know because they just wouldn't get it. I'd get asked annoying questions about it because everyone on the internet wants to rape you, of course. >>
"HOW DO YOU KNOW THEY'RE NOT SOME CREEPY OLD GUY?" "THAT'S KINDA WEIRD, AREN'T YOU TOO OLD FOR THAT?" "WHAT'S A MESSAGE BOARD?" (yes, I've known someone before who didn't know what a message board was) or worse, they'd want to join. -_-;
Then I'd be barraged on facebook with "I DON'T GET IT, THIS IS TOO HARD," "HOW DO I MAKE GOLD?" "WHAT'S THAT ITEM YOU HAVE ON, IT LOOKS COOL, OMG I LOOKED ALL OVER I CAN'T FIND IT" "CAN YOU LEND ME GOLD/ITEMS?"
asdfasdf. >> I can only think of one girl I know who could probably 'handle' a site like this, but she doesn't get online much.
The rest of my friends I either met somewhere else on the internet and just wouldn't be interested in this, or I met them on an avatar site. xD

I might have a few other friends who might be able to 'handle' the site, but I don't think they'd be interested. xD

My boyfriend does know I'm on them. But he thinks they're stupid. >>
My mom knows. I actually got her into Gaia when I was still going there. she and I got sick of it and quit at about the same time. Now she doesn't go on avatar sites, but I still sometimes show her a Mene avatar that I'm particularly proud of, ask her to donate for CIs, or just gush about how we got lots of cool new items.

Ahnemesis 11-13-2008 11:24 PM

I'm not embarassed to tell anyone about this site or any other avatar site that I'm on. Last look I think I'm on all of them.
I watch anime because it's just another form of cartoon to enjoy. Hey. I love cartoons. No big deal.
I don't consider myself a geek, wapanese  or any other title that is commonly tossed at peoples feet these days. I've never been a nerd but if I'm called one for being here or anywhere else (no I do not have a my space page) I really could care less.
Most kids are ignorant and immature when it comes to whats acceptable and whats not. It's easier to predict the next hailstorm than to try and figure out whats acceptable and whats not with most kids these days.
Enjoy what you like and sod everyone who insults you for it. As long as your not hurting anyone else...have fun!

Chexala 11-14-2008 09:04 PM

Sometimes I feel embarassed about being on Mene and Gaia and a few other avatar sites, but my embarassment has less to do with liking them and more to do with the fact that I'm on them so much that I have hardly any other life. Sometimes when I talk to some of my friend who are out there in the world working and learning and experiencing and chasing their dreams, I feel a little ashamed of myself for not being out there with them. I love forums and avatars sites, don't get me wrong, but I spend too much time online in general. I'm not very good at working them into my life in an appropriate fashion.

As far as anime goes, I not at all embarassedabout liking it, but then again, I'm not a rabid, pushy, or obsessive fan. There are quite a few animes that I like, and I'm open to seeing more, but it's not my main interest in life. I do encourage everyone I know to watch anything by Haiyao Miasaki, but again, I'm not pushy about it. I guess it helps that no one I know has ever given me flack for it. What I get trouble for is having crushes on NPCs, so that's not something I talk about except wtih my good friends. ^_~

Melody 11-15-2008 07:02 PM

Chex- I have more online friends than RL friends. >.> Don't feel bad.

Striped Chocolate 12-02-2008 11:56 PM

Bahahaa! It doesn't matter to me. If people don't like it, then they don't like it. It's not their fault that their are not interested in anime. I don't really care what people think if it's about anime. As for e right now, I'm at school typing this! :DDD And my classmates didn't say anything.

Oh! You mean those people that are like:

OMG KAWAII NEKO DESU!

LOL. I did a journal on that on deviantart. xD bUt deleted it.

People that are japanese, and people that really do speak japanese don't do that. =/ It's only the wapanese people. It doesn't make them look intelligent. Just idiotic. Plain stupid. xD

i totally agree with you there. i dont tell the people around me about my avatars because they dont understand :| and probably never will. i dont tell them because my "friends" are way too shallow and i find it easier to communicate with people in deep discussion who i dont know. i dont know how it works it just does....

i went to a party once, and this girl invited a whole bunch of wapanese-ers. she just didnt know they were wapanese-ers. one or two were even chinese, like me, and i was thinking "cant you be satisfied with knowing how to speak OUR awesome language?" she says stuff like "gomenasai" (i think i misspelled...) or "oh my gosh so kawaii~ii" and all that. soon the whole party was jabbering in wanabe-japanese and i was literally sitting in the corner. i am not the social type, see. all that is just...ick. they do seriously look stupid.

the only times i ever use another language other than english or chinese is when i want to call someone an idiot but not want them to understand. that comes in very handy, it does.

kitkat 12-03-2008 03:30 AM

Eh? why be embarrassed? Ew... partial japanese unless you know/learning it = no.

CandiedJester 12-03-2008 10:58 PM

I don't feel like a geek for liking avatar sites :/ should I? ^^; I tell everybody I'm on avatar sites, lol. >.<

I like anime, but I never get to watch it :/
So I know next to nothing about anime
^^;

Sporks! mwa ha
1) Maybe because most people think it's just about dressing up dolls? Idk
2) I didn't know they were >.<; But maybe because alot of them like anime, and cosplay, and comic books, and all that jazz.
3) No idea :/ I didn't even know they were
4) Because anime is japanese?
5) IDK! but I sure use them alot, heh :'D

Queen_Andais 12-04-2008 12:20 AM

Only ever joined Menewsha and Gaia. Don't really care for Anime as ShadowFflur can attest to this since she is a real life friend of mine. The only reason I am here is because of her persuading me to be here and I've followed her from Gaia to Menewsha.
And this was one of the only ways of keeping in contact with her since she now lives on the otherside of the united states from me.
Met many really awesome people on this site and count them amongst my greatest friends. No, I am not a geek and proudly tell people that I belong to these sites. In fact, my mom has been known to dress up my avatar from time to time. *shrugs* Perhaps my family is odd for mocking me for being on these sites...Rodd (the boyfriend) doesn't even mind that I am on here as well. :) Nice of him to be understanding.
*Huggles Mel* This is one of the greatest people that I have met here.

`F o a m 12-04-2008 07:32 AM

I guess I'm kind of embarrassed to show my friends any avatar site besides Gaia because then they might see some stuff or learn some stuff about me that I do not wish them to. xD
And also, I guess I wouldn't really trust my friends to act mature on an avatar site with the exception of a few that is.
Avatar sites and other sites have put me ahead of my friends as well because they're just getting into chatspeak and all of that other idiot stuff with acronyms and I just want to punch some people in the face. (Especially when one of them found out the word Fail and Epic Fail.) But I think I more best friends online then I do in real life which doesn't bother me because I probably spend more time online anyway. xD (Sad)
And I haven't really experienced wapanese people that much because I distance myself from idiots. ^^

ooOBarbieDoLLOoo 12-05-2008 02:08 PM

IT'S NOT ABOUT ANIME OR GEEKS ETC,BUT ITS REALLY ABOUT WHAT YOUR INTERESTED IN. PERIOD!

-i dont like people checking out the sites i go to 'cause then they'll make fun of me and make a big deal out of it. For instance, my parents consider it a waste of preciousssssssss time, my freinds say its for kids...etc
-well am not considered a geek...but an internet junky...and i have no idea why!!!
-I dont know why "we" are considered "anime loving freaks"....thats lame and not totally true!
- i cant answer therest 'causer i have no idea!!!! O_o

merlin_blackheart 12-11-2008 07:54 PM

Personally yes, I watch and enjoy Anime. I prefer listening to the ORIGINAL voice actors as even the best American voice actors started with kids cartoons and therefore tend to over act in spaces where there should just be quiet breathing/little reaction. So sue me… So what if there are Narutards or whatever, I'm going to watch the anime with a good storyline and great voice actors and ignore the fact that people like 4kids will completely ruin a good anime simply because a character is a chain-smoker cough One Piece cough. As to geekdom, it is entirely up to you whether you categorize yourself as a geek/nerd and not really how other people see you. Or maybe I'm just one of those really rare people who would rather get to know the person instead of the stereotype…

linzi666 12-13-2008 01:39 AM

i dont think this site is geek its not ''cool'' but its not.... how to put this with out being ofensive because im not an ofensive purson. its for people who want to socialise and take joy from cute pictures that they can play dressup with and i havent seen a male char yet so its kinda a feminin thing. ^-^
ps click an egg ^-^

kitty~lover 12-13-2008 09:20 AM

well i guess some people just like to keep the site for themselves and dont like to share it with others,i mean that's what i did when i join gaia, but even if some people like anime, dosnt mean they are what you call "geeks" it's ok to still have the childhood spirit right?

linzi666 12-13-2008 03:06 PM

i have gaia

Rizzpheal 12-22-2008 01:24 AM

I know what you are saying,
most of my girl friends don't understand the stuff I do lol,
I just have a thing for avie communities,
guess it's a bit due to the fact that I'm asian.
but I don't like anime shows all that much,
I just love dressing up stuff and chat,
what's wrong with that? :3

K_ara 12-25-2008 07:50 PM

i'm not embarrassed, but i wouldn't show them on purpose that i go on avatar sites. however, there are a few people whom i know that like these kinds of things, so i let them know.

Guivre 01-02-2009 03:49 PM

I hate anime and manga with a passion. I am an old person, and in the comics business from time to time and can count on one hand the manga I've enjoyed. American and European comics are far superior, it's like how England used to filter back America's blues music back to them through the Beatles and Stones. That's what Japan does with comics. Yes, they have had a great illustrative graphics history but it has nothing to do with modern comics.

Before people start attacking me I will describe one of the manga I DID enjoy. I wish I could remember the name of the creator. It was about a woman living in an apartment that didn't allow pets and she brought a penguin home from the zoo and it was living in her bathroom. And trust me, it was even cuter than it sounds.

So maybe, manga involving penguins is AOK.

But avatar sites. I dunno I tell people I belong to them, but they know I'm here because of the artist communities. They know my opinions on other things and it's not like I'm still in HS and hypersensitive about what other people think about me.

- - - -

Edit:

Okay, I found the comic via google, it came out in 1994, and was called "The tragedy of P". It's since been made into anime. Oh, yay. And, the penguin was not from the zoo, but if you see or read it, you'll see why I thought I remembered that.

Ria 01-03-2009 05:53 PM

I guess it's just a general assumption.
Only my closest friends know about my addiction to avatar sites.
And all of my close friends like Anime but we don't really obsess over it. There's no need to.
I sometimes go on these type of sites while I'm in art, but I usually hide the avatars, or make the screen really small so I don't get caught on it by a teacher, and the other kids can't see what I'm doing.

I just really like the idea of these sites. On other forums I see no need to post, so I lurk. But on avatar sites, you post for gold or whatever the currency to dress your little avatar. It feels more rewarding to post.
I don't see why they have to assosiate everyone on these sits with Anime/Manga.
I do like it, but it's not enough for me to include as an interest. I just put reading, or watching tv. I know the style of the pixels is usually an anime style, but it's the most effective for these sites.

Setsu 01-03-2009 06:06 PM

As for my part; I would consider myself as a little 'freakish'.
I'm turning 20 this month, but I still enjoy dressing up pixel paperdolls (let it be in avatar communities or in the dolling community), watching cartoons and reading manga. I excessively use emoticons (graphics and "ascii"(?) ) and tend to overact sometimes.
Freakish ; because that is something that a person of my age should NOT do. (according to what the environment states).
But I'm sure almost everybody weilds a part of their personality that does not fit into the ideal image of what they should like/be/act. Some people are skilled to hide that, some are proud of that o_O.

I know plenty of people that aren't anime-fans, but are overly obsessed with cars, pcs or certain other things o_O. They upload extremely hilarious pictures of themselfes, or "wRiTe lIkE tHaT, y0o!". For me, those guys are not less geeky/nerdy/freaky as I am XD"

So in my Opinion, there is no higher percantage of strange people in avatar communities, than on other sites, or even on the streets oO".

But I think that's all matter of opinion. So, nobody has to agree with me *shrugs*.

Concerning anime:

Just because I like Anime and Manga, I won't force anybody else to like it. Everybody has a different taste, different opinions. They're not less valuable than me, aswell as I'm not less valuable than they are o.O". If they think they are..well...Such conceit knows no bounds.
I'm not a person that attacks other people on their opinions and interests, and that's one reason I can't stand people doing so. Regardless of their faction.

Extreme enthusiasts and "haters" are annoying, but there is nothing I can do about it :gonk:. => I try to dodge them as far as it's possible.

I was accused of being a "wapanese" several times (by "wamericans", as I call them), but I don't really care. Like people also labeled me "goth" and "emo"...What I am certainly not.
Some things shouldn't be taken too seriously.

So, I hope nobody feels offended by my post/my bad english skills/ whatsoever. I really love the mene community and atmosphere around the board...and don't want to spoil that ^^".

Elmira Swift 01-04-2009 12:51 AM

I enjoyed comics way back in the 80s, before I'd even heard about anime. Sadly, my love for comics didn't lead to a love of anime. Now, my 10yo is a die-hard pokemon fan, so I've been exposed to that series.

My daughter, partner and I all have accounts on neopets. They're more interested in it than I am, but it's something we all sort of do together. I'm on gaia and here as well. For me, it gives me a chance to socialize with other people who may have similar interests. The area I live in is very rural and very southern - and I am a native CA transplanted here nearly 11 years ago, and still tend to feel a bit like an alien.
