It would seem that everyone has their own interpretation. XD Indeed, each word has a subtle difference in meaning that varies depending on the people and situations.

To me, "Nerd" is someone into book-knowledge/information. (Ie: "A science nerd." or "A literature nerd.")

"Geek" is someone into "media" things. By which I mean music, television, movies, video games, and computers.

So I'm geeking out to Harvest Moon or Pokemon, but being totally nerdy by crushing on Mr. Darcy or the Count of Monte Cristo.

:3 that's how I define the difference.

Mmmm nerding out while crushing on Mr. Darcy. <33

side note: not Bartuc Darcy, Fitzwilliam Darcy. :3

jellysundae 04-08-2009 06:23 PM

I think we should amalgomate the two and call ourselves nerks.

Thulhu 04-09-2009 08:57 AM

I love your avi Pandii!
I don't really mention to people that I go on Avatar sites becuase i'm in my early early twenties and all of my friends who were on avi sites like gaia stopped years ago like at 17. Because of this I feel like avatar sites are seen by most people my age as a "thing of the past" or "childish".
In reality many people i know talk on multiple forums and have online friends, some even talk on anime forum sites and no-one thinks that they are geeky or weird.
For some reason though playing avi dress-up while you type to people is considered just enough different to be weird.
As far as I'm concerned I'm doing what all my friends are doing only i'm earning something back for what I post (immediate gratification) and I get to play games and have more fun in general.

Welcome to Menewsha, home of the Nerks. xD

pinkythepink 04-11-2009 10:21 AM

I really can't say I agree with any of the cliches you're throwing out there. I've never been called a geek outside of joking around, and certainly not "wapanese".

I left anime behind years ago, and just because an avatar is dressed in that style doesn't mean I'm going to pick up phrases like "kawaii" or any of the other random stuff people throw out there.

The only reason I don't talk about avatar websites is because if the person I'm talking to isn't a part of it, they'll have no idea what I'm talking about.

Transcendence 04-11-2009 06:53 PM

I do feel embarassed to have people know that i go on avatar sites. I have had them rideculed in the past and that has caused me to be picked on without them knowing that i go on there. It makes me sad. they dont event know what they are talking about.

Its true. only geeks go on there. If that makes me one, then oh well. I like it and i dont want to change yet. My boyfriend always wonders what i am doing and i close it down because i dont want him to know that I go on avatar forum sites. He might make fun of me or think it is stupid. Maybe it is ok. maybe i can tell him or show him what i am doing.

It isnt as bad as i think is it?

I dont know I am so confused. I want to be liked but i want to have something to ocupy my mind and things when I am bored and I like getting advice and such from people online.

salvete 04-12-2009 08:54 PM

Salvete does not consider herself a geek. Her definition of the term 'geek' is very different, actually.
She refers to a few of her friends as 'geeks' ~ people who explode things for fun.
Well, she guesses that not all geeks do that.

Of course, this difference in definition might be a result of the fact that she is not active on avatar sites unless she favors an event that is taking place.
Salvete is not big on posting but will do so on occasion if it means earning 0.25 carrots each reply for an Easter event.

Rabid Rainbow 04-12-2009 10:20 PM

I definitely consider myself a geek. I'm a member of two avatar sites, devoutly watch Star Wars (I have the complete soundtracks for Ep. IV and VI on my iPod), know random bits of trivia about almost every movie I've seen, listen to nothing else except Broadway musicals (right now it's Shrek the Musical <3), Star Wars, assorted songs from movies (Circle of Life <3) , and the occasional Coldplay song.

I also used to really be into anime, but not so much anymore although anime heavily influenced my drawing style. Now I'm more into Artemis Fowl, fairy tales, and Shakespeare's comedies.

[N]ightmare 04-18-2009 07:16 PM

I don't consider myself a geek, otaku, nerd, prep, weirdo... or anything like that. I have no shame in telling people that I am on Avatar Forums. I have no trouble telling them I read WebComics religiously either.

I suppose some people do look at me and think i'm a nerd for my hobbies at home, but i'm just a normal person with my own random quirks.

I also go clubbing, I exercise regularly, I do martial arts, I draw, I read, I watch movies with friends and go out into the town with my friends.

No one I know has ever labeled me a geek... though they have said I have geeky tenedencies before. Haha! But everyone does, no matter how big of a prep, jock, goth, emo... whatever label you choose to wear.

^^;

So I don't really know why you feel the way you do, since it seems like a silly reason to put a label on someone. It's just an avatar forum. A place to talk to people about random things.

Alexis Durem 04-19-2009 10:34 PM

Lol...i have my friends tell me all the time i'm a geek. Not because i go on menewsha, though

Sagitar 04-21-2009 12:45 PM

I don't try to hide it or are embarrased by it at all!
I watch anime sometimes, I collect My little ponies, I go to avatar sites - so what?

I'm 22 by the way. And Yes, I'm a geek, I love my computer and computer/cideo games. But going to sites like Menewsha doesn't make anyone a geek in my opinion.. :|

Massage 04-22-2009 11:06 PM

I'm not sure if I'm a geek or nerd or anything like that.
I just like these sites... where I can dress up dolls... and collect things... and chat... all at the same time. (^^);;

1] I personally prefer to keep my internet self separate from my internet self. At least on Menewsha... for the most part.
I knew a fair amount of people on gaia in real life. I never hid that.

Some people see these sites as get-a-ways from real life, others may be embarrassed, etc. (yea, I can't think of any others ^^;;)

2] I never knew those that went on sites like this were considered geeks. ^^;;
I guess I'm oblivious to things like this.

3] That's probably who these sites are targeted at. Though, I don't know what wapanese is. D:

4] No idea...

5] Again... no idea...

Baritone 04-28-2009 04:12 PM

Eh!? I'm considered a geek for liking avater sites? O_o
I didn't know that...wait, are you from the States? In the UK not many people know about anime-or atleast not in my school- and even if they did, they wouldn't care or flame me for it. That being said, my year is pretty close and has grown past the calling of names. Maybe people in the years below me would say something if they found out but no one will actually care, most people dislike those who catagorise people. Also, I wouldn't care what they thought anyways 8D
I gained a lot of confidence after performing in a show so now I'm just like "Pfft, like you'd know" if anyone says anything to me or about me ^^

SakuraElf 04-30-2009 01:15 PM

Well, I am totally a geek, have been all my life, and I'm not sure if its a bad thing but i hope to steer my daughter down the same path, but not too hard. Its very hard being a geek mom, you are under the microscope all the time as a parent, and many "normal" parents don't understand, so things like this are a guilty pleasure.

II Certified II 04-30-2009 02:59 PM

me a geek? (for a sec there i thought it was greek lol) nope lol
hhmmm i just consider this as a get-a-way from my real life,, it's not like my life is boring , no friends , no fun or somethin but because i find avatar sites fun, plus i can learn more when i'm having fun , right?

yeah i have watched anime but am not a crazy anime fanatic, and in fact i rarely watch now because of school haha and gaia+menewsha and others more xDD

Alegrl 09-26-2009 08:11 PM

Codette 09-26-2009 08:21 PM

nah, not embarrased. I actually got one of my best friends to join. ^.^
I love anime, I enjoy reading manga, and I took 3 years of Japanese in high school, and loved it. But I fully admit I'm a geek. I love to read, I love to learn. You gatta learn something new everyday.
I'm 18, and I'm trying to get a bunch of my friends to join Mene. We're here, because we want to be, because it's fun, and because we love discussing things about ourselves and our world.

Blkmage Disaster 09-27-2009 01:31 AM

I don't think it's considered being a geek for liking anime, or going to avatar sites. That's just bullies being stereotypical jerks.

I don't normally care what people think or say about me in general. If someone calls me a geek for it, they have no life. I think that avatar sites like mene are good for socializing, especially if you don't have good social skills in real life.

Since I've been on here, my social skills have gotten better.

It' s not bad thing to like anime/manga, it doesn't make you a geek. It' s the same with books and movies. It just means you have an interest in it.

I've never heard of wapanese before, what I've heard from this is that it's an insult to emoties. It's a way to express yourself online; but you can't really express emotion on the internet. It's the same as showing emotion in real life. If you don't have that, what are you a robot?

Just don't listen to people who tell you these things, if you like it, you like it.

If they don't, well, who cares. >.>

Hollyshort 09-28-2009 09:01 PM

I don't think of myself as a geek, I live a fine life of sports, along with games. Only some of my friends call me a geek, and that's more of a joke than anything else. On top of that, I share my avatar site, I even show my Gaia character on Facebook.

Dest1218 09-29-2009 03:10 AM

I'm not embarrassed that i get on here - in fact around 30 people at my school (only 100 people my age so that's a big fraction of the people - basically my friends) know i'm on here and they even have played some of the games
I don't know anime and i've never read it so some of those i can't answer, but some people being considered geeks may have less to do with the sites they get on and more to do with intelligence because some think that geek equals smart so i'd just take it as a compliment

nicechic6 09-29-2009 03:36 AM

its not that if you go on a anime site its more like if you talk about ti all the time or you wear stuff from the site that makes you a geek. i mean completely normal people have gone on sites like these before and are not tormented at all. i know cause no one cares about what sites i visit but in the locker room at school there are these girls that keep talking about some sort of anime show and they pretend like there marrying the people from it! it sorta freaks me out when they do that i mean its like a really weird obsession. an thats y people tease them!

The Ultimate Begger 09-29-2009 04:25 AM

I'm actually in the contrary, I used to love anime and was proud of it. Never considered myself a geek thou. And for the avi sites, I find it hilarious just to tell people not embarrased not all, I don't see the reason so yeah.

Shazza 09-29-2009 01:42 PM

Well personally I am not a huge fan of anime, my kids don't like it either and I defiantely wouldn't class everyone here as geeks.
I don't mind who knows what websites I go on, this is basically just a social networking site, its on the same scale as myspace or facebook so why shouldn't people go on here?
My kids friends in highschool pretty much all of them are on avatar sites, though they mostly haunt Kinsaki.
I see no problem and if people are too embarrassed to let people know what they go on they are obviously very low on self confadence.

FAGGY CHAN 10-08-2009 05:31 PM

I'm not a geek, I'm more of a bully and loner xD

But no, I'm not embarrassed. Anyone who makes a big deal about some one being on a site is retarded and still in high school.
Although, most of the people here ARE still in highschool. Literally.
