Cute avie, Kat!

If your grandmother had breast cancer, your doctor will want to know that.
Especially if it was on the maternal side...your mother's mother.

Hey, I just went and bought myself a wig!
I had been thinking of doing it for a long time...my hair is so thin.

Hubby actually likes it, even though it's short.
I tried the longer wigs, but they just looked weird on me.
As you get older, longer hair just looks strange.

Kat Dakuu 08-10-2012 08:09 PM

thanks!

I don't really know what she died of. it happened only a couple years after I was born.
plus, I don't have a doctor now.

really? people actually wear wigs?
i think that just depends. longer hair that is. Some women keep their hair long, though perhaps they tie it up in a bun or braid. I've seen old ladies do that in my mom's church.

Connielass 08-10-2012 09:57 PM

My mom and one of my bosses wear toupees.

Plus, people with cancer usually wear wigs. I grow my hair long to donate it to Locks of Love, which makes wigs out of natural hair for people with cancer.

Kat Dakuu: - You should find out whether she died of any cancer or virus. Medical history like that can really be vital to a proper diagnosis if you ever come down with anything, not to mention that if your grandma died of breast cancer, you should probably plan on beginning your screenings earlier than the average recommendation.

Jeannesha 08-10-2012 10:11 PM

That's true, Connie!

Quite a few people wear "weaves" now...pieces of hair that they attach to their own.

Wig technology has come a long ways since I last bought one.
I was in my teens and had long hair, so I bought a short curly wig just for fun.
It was HOT!

I wore this one out and about today, and it wasn't bad.
Cooler than wearing a hat on your head even.

Hubby agreed that if I want to start wearing wigs off and on, I can stop getting my hair colored and let it go white. This wig cost less than a session at the hair salon...
I was surprised at how reasonable it was.

This one isn't real hair...it actually cost MORE than the real hair ones.
I like it.

good morning! (god I hate being awake in the morning)

I thought it was really cheap to dye your hair.

Are you kidding? Although it does largely depend on the region you live, around here (Philadelphia metropolitan suburbs), it generally costs, on average:

Single-process color: $45
Double-process: $80
Foils (highlight + lowlight) $120

And having to go back every two to three weeks to get your roots touched up...

One tip: If you don't want to go back any sooner than normal to avoid paying out the nose, don't eat any avocado. All the nutrients packed into avocado, among other things, make your hair grow faster.

Kat Dakuu 08-12-2012 04:58 AM

but you can buy hair dye at kroger...
you can dye your hair with koolaid for heavens sake!

Connielass 08-12-2012 05:16 AM

Oh, sure.

But admit it: at-home dye never quite produces the same result as a salon-professional dye.

Kat Dakuu 08-12-2012 05:27 AM

I've never known someone who's dyed their hair at a salon and I've never done any dye myself. seriously, everyone uses out of the box dyes.

Estrella 08-12-2012 05:44 AM

I've never done my hair professionally.
But I've done lots of crazy colors with it in the past.
Blue & purple, gold, red, brown, bleached it... oh my yes.

I haven't dyed it in a long time though because I just don't feel like it.

Kat Dakuu 08-12-2012 06:00 AM

where do you get the stuff to dye your hair crazy colors? I've always wondered.

Jeannesha 08-12-2012 05:29 PM

Gads, Kat...out of the box dyes always look bad in my opinion.
They are one-note, and generally make you look helmet-head.

I have always gotten mine done at the salon...my sister does too.

The only thing I do to save money is touch up the roots in-between salon visits.

My hair grows fairly fast, so some times I touch up the roots twice before I go back in to have the salon work on it.

I usually get the two-process dye. It looks more natural than one color over everything. It's generally a color with a few high or low-lights added in.

Now I may just let my hair revert to natural color (white).
We'll see how it goes...

Captain Howdy 08-12-2012 08:45 PM

*butts in on conversation*

I've dyed my hair a fair amount of colors. ;D

Red, burgundy, green, blue, blue-green, purple, bleached. Didn't try orange, kinda wanted to, though.

Never been to a salon either. My hair is naturally very dark, so I usually had to do the bleaching myself and i've burnt my scalp a few times. Not fun. D:

Kat Dakuu 08-12-2012 10:18 PM

I want to dye my hair orange or some sort of coppery color with black stripes.

Captain Howdy 08-12-2012 10:27 PM

If you have to bleach your hair, be careful about how long you leave it on.

You might fry your head. [ninja]

Kat Dakuu 08-12-2012 10:28 PM

I have light blond hair already.

Jeannesha 08-13-2012 08:37 PM

You should be able to dye it orange then, Kat.

I think orange with black stripes would look pretty cool!
If you do it, you're going to have to take a picture and show us.

Yikes, Howdy...I'd hate to have a burnt scalp!

Kat Dakuu 08-13-2012 08:51 PM

I really do want to do it, but I'd probably have to have help. I don't think I can artfully put stripes in my own hair.

it does sound rather painful.

Queen_Andais 08-14-2012 01:40 AM

Howdy, your accidents with the bleach explain quite a bit, actually. O.o

Got my hair done this weekend at the beauty school, was decently priced and it helps someone get their clinical hours. Did highlights and lowlights, two different colors and kept my natural color. It came out fairly well. Caramel highlights mixed with red, but a naturally looking red, since my work gets all pissy about the color of your hair. Colors have to be natural. Sucks. Not like we deal with the general populace, however never had the insane urge to dye my hair funky colors.

Connielass 08-14-2012 01:54 AM

I don't dye my hair at all, only because I donate it.

Kat Dakuu 08-14-2012 02:17 AM

I've donated my hair before, but I keep my hair above my shoulders nowadays.

Queen_Andais 08-14-2012 02:46 AM

I donated my hair once, sent it to locks of love. That was a couple of years ago. Not into cutting my hair off anytime soon.

Kat Dakuu 08-14-2012 04:31 AM

I just noticed how pretty and bright that picture in your sig is. oooh, mesmerizing!

Jeannesha 08-14-2012 09:41 PM

It is a pretty picture, isn't it?
Rainbows and everything.

I've never gone to a beauty school...I don't know that we have any in the area.

I've always thought it would be great to try a massage school too... cheap massages.

How much did it cost to do the highlights and lowlights?
If I get those at Fantastic Sam's, along with a cut and regular color, I've in the $160 range. Pretty expensive.

I've actually talked my hairdresser into just charging me for partial highlights, but putting them all around my head...just not as many of them.

Kat Dakuu 08-14-2012 11:51 PM

*rolls around* I'm bored! I may just pack because I'm so bored!
