So you coil it, and then smooth it out?

yes jean. you just build up the walls with snakes, though you don't have to smooth them out. I left one unsmooth so it has a wrinkled surface.

You can do those at home? I always thought they had to be baked in a special oven in high temperatures...

it does need to be cooked in a kiln unless its polymer clay, but you can just send it somewhere else to be fired.

I know that there are places that have kilns that you can go to and play around with pots and glazes and stuff...

There are businesses that exist solely for people to come and craft pots and stuff.
They have a kiln there, and you do your thing and fire the pot there.
I made a dragon statue from a place like that.
They had some clay figures that you could paint and glaze and then they fired them.

I know of places with plaster molds to paint and studios that do workshop classes, but that doesn't seem to be what you're talking about.

One place here in Austin is called Cafe Monet.
It's a coffee shop that has pottery that you paint and then they fire it for you.

that's not the same as making it though. they come from plaster molds and is aimed mostly at small children.

I doubt that a coffee shop is aimed at small children.

the painting of that type of pottery is. There are so many places like that where even the non-artistic types can make a cute figurine or decorative plate.

Man, I am so hungry right now...
We had a meeting just after lunchtime this afternoon, so I never got any lunch.
As a result, I'm starving! Also, before he was getting our food ready, hubby was preparing the ribs he's going to cook tomorrow so for hours I've been smelling wonderful things cooking (the BBQ sauce and stuff) that I can't eat until tomorrow!

It was great...chicken cattchatorie...(or however it's spelled).
Kind of spicey. Hubby does half the recipe, but he thinks he must have used the entire amount of pepper. So it was pretty hot, but really good anyway.
Ribs tomorrow though, so I'm so excited!
