I took a novels course, and the only way to get a good grade from that professor was to jot down words he used, and then parrot them back during the tests...

Yeah, it does depend on the prof. I have one professor who is a bit like that but he's pretty good about if you're truly intelligent he gives you fair credit. But he also gives you an easy out for tests.

The best thing that novels course did for me was to introduce me to Jane Austen.
We did Emma in the class.

We also did Tom Jones, Crime and Punishment, 1984, Anna Karenina...

I love 1984!!! One of my absolute favorite books.
