So, it was surprisingly fun. I had the feeling it wouldn't be stressful. Mostly I got to talk about my writing and even got to give a basic explanation of who Kat and Nicole are.
this one woman kept asking me why I do anime though. She asked more than once if I do other styles. Why do I borrow an existing style?

that's random.
and that doesn't seem surprising for something like that.

It was only one out of 5 people that even cared about the anime style.

the anime style gets a lot of crap, and i get why it does, but i don't think people should be that vicious about it. i get a very similar form of crap, but not because i work in the anime style.

i've decided the art field is one big pissing contest

Reminds me of a thread in the art discussion that's titled "anime is not art". But the way I hear it here, everything is art. it's funny, the writing department claims writing, the theater claims performance (though some art for sets and design and this and that), an the music program claims music....
....but the art program claims all of that if it can be used in a conceptual art way! Oh no, everything can be art even if it's 90% normal book. That's not writing, that's art!

not so much pissing contest around here. nope. instead, they include too much!

correction, the fine art field is one big pissing contest. they have to find SOMEONE to pick on, even if it's occasionally themselves. Everyone's been picked on by them.

I'm of the any field of creativity can be called art mind. So yeah.... it might not all be good art, but it's art.

they theoretically include "everything" when it's convenient for them to, or they need that as an excuse for sub-par work. but god forbid you're currently not popular with them. then you're not art anymore, you're a "commercial artist" whose work will only end up in furniture stores and over grannys' couch

I wanna be a commercial artist....

then find a group of people that will support your endeavors. you will find no fellowship amongst most fine artists i know of. if you're not wh**ing yourself out to galleries, you seem not to have a right to call yourself an artist...

I was told by a gallerist that I'm brave to say I do my art for myself rather than the art world. She seemed to really like me. You should move to Santa Fe, Tae. I think you'd probably have an easier time here. I was encouraged by multiple people to work on getting my illustrations published with my writing an other non-gallery options.

new mexico is generally very accepting of its artists. or so i hear. you're more likely to be able what you want to do

and there are reasons I want to get out of texas. like i just. this is a very judgmental state as a whole

Yeah. I don't know why I'm not staying here over the summer. too much effort though. I don't want to go 'home' though.

the one real gallery owner my class went to visit basically told us probably none of us would ever make it. he told us the world "doesn't need anymore mediocre artists" and that unless we consider ourselves masters of our craft, have something profound to say to the world, and can spend all our days obsessively doing work, we have no chance. that's the kind of attitude you have in Houston. Santa Fe must be nice.

Like I said, I need to experience the world outside of Texas, if only for a year.
I love Texas. I do, but so many problems.

we were supposed to submit to jurried shows in my class. Everyone succeeds. Mostly, I think my teachers are too nice. Everything is good enough and I don't get many half-way harsh critiques. A lot of my portfolio review was that too, but the teacher also didn't assign the harshest person to meet with me. I get some harshness from students, but most people don't know how to look at things that aren't conceptual, so when I don't have anything to say about that....end of conversation.

hey, if you want me to, i can give a good criticism. i'm not a b***h about them, but yea, just ask me what kind you want me to pay attention to, and i'll let you know what i think. i'm good at being objective about art, which might sound like it's an oxymoron, but trust me. i'm even better at it when i'm typing and don't have to speak ^^;

oh...wingsssyyy *sings* When quoting, you would but the (authors name, pg #) after the quote right? But where does the period go in that? I can't remember what I learned in 10th grade.

Kat it goes "quote" (citation, ##). that format. Also, the Purdue OWL is a good resource for all MLA formatting questions.

This is what I'm working on right now. It's the second illustration for my Illustrators of the Future contest entry. I told myself I was just doodling and I would do that on nicer paper, but I drew my illustration idea anyway. I probably don't have enough drawn to really say much about though.
