“.....This is punishment for our sins,” Oz said finally. He lowered his head and stared each of them in the eye, his weak appearance suddenly full of intensity. No one said anything in response.
“God is punishing us because we are all unclean.”

how does that sound as the end of my first chapter? have enough emotional impact?

I came up with Oz first and like him most, but he's quiet for the most part except random deep lines so he doesn't hold a lot of weight in the story at the beginning. I love tater a lot too and really, I even love my jerk character.
