ROFL - that's rather funny that each of the books is at a different branch! If you think you'd enjoy the series, I'd suggest you go ahead and request them all at once so that perhaps they'll be there for you when you're ready to read them. The books are not particularly thick.

My parents and I were watching this thing on Autism that the news was pimping and how there is now an internet based site that charges $100 a month and allows parents to see a licensed behavorist working with an autistic child. And while I might be all for helping kids out that legitimately have Autism, my personl feeling is that there are parents who would rather have someone else participate in their child's development, freeing them up for a round of golf or that cocktail lunch with their friends.
This autism craze reminds me of the ADD, AHD and ADHD craze 15 years ago that my little sister got sucked into. Medicating kids was easier then actually working on the deviant behavior or better yet recognizing that the kid was just being a typical kid. Now we have a generation of kids that are hooked on pills and might some day move on to the harder drugs (if they haven't already) and then we as a society are in even bigger trouble. |
That's horrible Queen. And I agree that the Autism/Aspergers Spectrum is today's version of ADHD that was around when I was a kid (they suck my parents into it with my brother, luckily our pediatrician knew the school was full of crap). Totally off topic, but does anyone else think I should have a couple of sheep on my avatar? |
Anything... anything at all... including redefining diseases and creating new ones for "being a kid"... in order to push a new bunch of drugs on us! Sure, there's a "war on drugs"... the problem is that it should be the war on PHARMACEUTICAL drugs. This is ridiculous - we're being run by the pharmaceutical companies these days - not by ourselves. *shakes head at the lunacy of it all*
And yes, Eternal - you totally look like you should have a couple sheep running around your avatar! |
Eternal- well we do have Barbra the Lamb? xD I think it would look quite fitting next to you.
@ drugged kids- Yeah, that kind of thing scares me. ^^;; But it might not be that the parents want more time with out their kids, so much as they fear that their child has that condition and doesn't want it hampering the child, so they'll pay whatever they need to to get it taken care of. Look at my twins, they need speech therapy, they'll be going twice a week, I love spending time with them, but I know that this is what they need, I'm not a speech therapist, I'm not even into early childhood education. It makes sense as a parent to differ to someone who is specialized in the field. (Granted I don't let people come near my kids when it comes to drugs to control behavior ^^;; ) I'd go for a second opinion if one of them was diagnosed with something more than just a speech problem. |
hi Eternal
how have you been and how is your quest coming along? |
Mel, that's some of it, thanks to our social conditioning, but there's far too much of a now-ingrained concept in many parents of the idea of "giving the kids over to an authority" for whatever realm lies in question for the kid or their supposed "normal development" (dictated by these same authorities). Instead of parents actually accepting parental authority themselves, listening to their kids and to their own instincts, we tend to hand them over to an "expert" at the first and earliest of (manufactured) signs something may not be going according to the (idealistic and manufactured) "progress chart" for our children. Parents are being told these days -in subtle and not-so-subtle ways- that they are essentially incapable of raising their own kids without a myriad of "professionals" (usually dealing drugs) involved with the kid's development along the way. Yes, there are certainly circumstances that are beyond the average parent's ability to "fix" for their child, but there's so much more that the parent Can fix by themselves and they don't because of this misconception. I've seen far too many children completely ruined by a scared and insecure parent passing the child from 'expert' to 'expert' to 'expert', instead of giving the child the parental attention they truly needed (emotionally, physically, psychologically, etc.).

looks like she ain't around for the moment
come ack another time |
Blaze- are you saying there is more I should/could be doing for the twins speech problems? If you have ideas I'm totally open to them. But I'm reading to them at least twice a day for 30 + minutes each time. (Melody loves story time, Aaron not so much) and we play games with words and I try to get them to talk when we're having a conversation...but I just don't know what else I should be doing, other then getting them the speech therapist that specializes in childhood speech impediments.

Mel, my comment was a generalization concerning the overall attitude so many parents seem to have concerning their kids - it's easier to medicate them than to deal with kids being kids (the whole ADD/ADHD phenomena, for example) - but that little rant wasn't directed at you (I'm sorry if it seemed that way!)... I just get frustrated when I see (too many) parents shoving their kids off on "experts" just 'cuz the kid didn't hit a certain arbitrary benchmark by a certain age.
Kids develop at different rates, and if they're not all doing "x" by "whatever age", doesn't necessarily mean there's something wrong... maybe the kid just needs more time. They don't all potty train at exactly the same age, nor do their other skills all develop at the same time... Concerning your kids, I don't know the details concerning them (& I'm certainly not an "expert")... but how old are they? What's going on? And most importantly, what is your instinct concerning them and this situation telling you (the arbitrary expectations being quoted to you by the teachers or whomever aside)? Do the twins just need more time to develop? Or perhaps they have no need to talk right now - perhaps you're just so attentive a mom, there's no need ... plus, they have each other...? [/brainstorming] |
-waits for crazy to return-
|
Mel...I found some cool information on helping speech development in twins.
http://multiples.about.com/cs/twinsi...echdelay_3.htm Not sure if you have this information yet or not, but I thought it could help boost them before they get into the therapy. |
Tel, thanks for the luck! I'm not doing so hot on the quest...those hairpins are pricy!!
We have a sheep? Is it a contribution item? I couldn't find her inthe stores, but I'll admit I didn't look terribly hard. |
Yeah, she was a event item or one of the items that showed up in the event store and then was discontinued. I think I have one somewhere. Hold on.... *digs in her inventory*
|
OMG, if I can borrow her, that's be awesome, thanks!
|
Yep yep, I sent you the trade. Use her for as long as you need her. Not in a big rush to get her back. Heh. She never was my kind of animal. I prefer carnivores.
|
I thnk I messaged this to you, but can you re-send it to Eternal's account? I'm too lazy to trade it over there myself. Thank you so much!

I am a relatively attentive mother, I know that's part of the problem, instead of making them talk, they were able to point, or I just knew it was time for them to get cups/lunch/whatever so they never had to ask for it. I've gotten better about that, and asking what they want to eat, making them answer in attempted sentences, describing things making them help etc, and I've noticed a bit of change in their speech, but it's still not enough for a baby sitter to come in and know what it is they're saying. I think the speech therapist said that at 3 at least 80% of what the child is saying should be understood...and my kids are far from that. I'd be happy with 50% since, they are twins and they have a twin-language and twins are notorious for being behind in infancy etc but still, theres no reason I shouldn't try to get them to catch up. ^^;; Andais- I'll check out the link. Thanks. <3 |
The information in the link is basically reinforcing what you have started doing with them. I thought if you hadn't started something the link would get you rolling in the right direction.
|
ah ok then, still finding stuff?
|
Eternal! You're poor quest thread seems to have become dormant.
I think it needs to be kicked back to page 1! *pushes thread to page 1* |
Thanks for the rescue! School is sucking the soul from my body... |
Sounds like a holy religious experience. Perhaps some soap or a needle and thread would help keep your soul teethered?
|
I wish it was a religious experience, I'd actually be enjoying it! Almost done with the first of the three papers. |
We can trade places. You can be here at work and I will write your papers for you. A nice change of pace.
