ROFL at the vinyl reference!!
Yeah... records, record players.... tapes! ... no answering machines... phones that plug into the wall and you can't take with you (or if you can, were bigger than the laptops we have now! ), no cable TV, the distinct lack of video games and computers ... things have certainly changed in the last few years!! |
No kidding. As human beings we have advanced and evolved at a faster rate then any other time in history. Look how long it took us to get from the stone age to the bronze age. Like forever!
|
Awww vinyl... Man I am not reading things right or we are using too many words that have multiple meanings... I kept thinking how can someone not know what that plasticy substance is... Ohhh music... RECORDS DUH!!!! Yeah soon enough CD's will be a thing of the past... I am sad cause VHS's are phasing out T_T they are Sooooooooooooo much better then DVD's and MUUUUUCH more durable when it comes to kids... When I can't find a VHS DVD player anymore and it turns into just a DVD or Blue ray player I am going to cry T_T there are a bunch of movies we have on VHS that aren't probably ever going to be released to DVD... Like Puff the Magic Dragon (and Puff the Magic Dragon and the Invisible Mr.Nobody) and all my little people tapes T_T
In the almost 4 years I have lived on my own we have probably gone through about 400 bucks worth of DVD's being ruined and we have only ADDED to our VHS not replaced them ^^ |
Here is what you do Jaz...start buying a VCR now, once every couple of months until you have a nice little stash of them and as each VCR breaks, you simply replace it with a new one from your stock pile. However, if VHS is anything like Vinyl, it will probably make a come back as well.

Queen, you look super lovely! I'm excited about eventually getting my dad's vinyl collection--he has some AMAZING stuff, like the entire Beatles collection, on vinyl. I'll probably never listen to them since they don't really sound great anymore. |
*grabby hands at the Beatles* My sister actually has a pretty large collection of records. My mom has a stereo that plays like everything but 8 tracks...
|
*siiiiiigh* .... aaaaah... all the old vinyl 12" that I used to have... and 45s.... *daydreams for a moment*
|
>< I don't know the difference but my mom didn't own a record player until after I moved out oddly enough... My dad HAD records but we didn't have a player so I never got that bit of education...
|
My favorite as a kid was to play around with the older, less then stellar turn table and put the 33s on at 45 speed and vice versa. I stopped doing that real quick when mom smacked me for it. We all grew up with a healthy appreciation for taking care of a turn table and caring for the records.
Mom has this cute tin with all her 45s she brought back from England and Dad has this impressive record collection that my older sister has already laid claim to when they pass away. Morbid but true. I just want the Rocky Horror Picture show vinyl. It's my favorite record...ever! Dad even has the original Star Wars soundtrack on vinyl |
I used to do the 45s on 33speed and visa versa too, Queen :XD: but I had a toy turntable at the time and didn't get smacked for doing that ;)
We had the Star Wars movie track on LP too at one point... ... geeze, I feel old! :P It seems so long ago, somehow! |
Blaze you can't feel old, cause then I will feel old and I am only 26 for crying out loud :gonk:
|
LOL. Hun, I'm older than you are... you have no reason to feel old - but I am a bit surprised you remember the whole 45s/33s thing ... and a number of other things that we've mentioned (of course, some of that stuff did kinda hang around for quite a while through my childhood, so perhaps it's not that surprising after all...)
|
Here is the difference between me and a lot other people I know my age...my parents raised me with all of that stuff. Christmas albums on vinyl, listening to 8 track tapes with dad out in the garage. Even had dad's old school receiver in my room for awhile when I was a teen. Loved that thing. Weighed more then me I swear.
Do you remember laser discs? |
Then you had a bit of an unusual upbringing, Queen (and a bit more healthy, imo, than many at that time... hell, even people just a couple years younger than I am seem to have been brought up in a whole different world sometimes!). Yes, I remember lazer discs... and 11 cents stamps and all kinds of things.

We still listen to the vinyls. Something great about hearing the music with the bumps and skips. CDs are just too filtered. As for how we were raised, we thought it was normal for people to play board games with our parents, listen to LPs and do family outings. Seems we were the abnormal family. I'm still pretty close with my parents and sisters. We all live in the same county and get together on a weekly basis just about.
Been sneezing all morning and now I am coughing like mad. It's driving me insane. Work really needs to change the filters on the ventilation system. You'd think since the building is at capacity that they would make sure the air in here is healthy. You should see all the dust from all the skin and people in here now. I have to clean my desk twice a week these days. |
Blech! That's just nasty... of course, we really need to take care of that kinds of stuff at the house now too... it's gotten a bit overwhelming, to be honest and it's not doing anything for our better health but it just seems that every time I think about it, I'm not in a position to do anything about it  Sad, but true.
|
Replaced the cabin filter on my car, that thing was nasty. Just all kinds of dust, pollen and pollutants from driving 50k miles. We should go back to filters that you rinse off with a hose, wipe down with soap and water, then put it back. We are by far a throw away society to the extreme. I think I am going to use clothe diapers for my kids. Can't stomach the thought of putting nasty huggies into the landfill.
|
LOL! I don't blame you for that thought Queen, but omg -- when you have to deal with diapers regularly, you may change your ideals a bit just to grab a bit of sanity (I couldn't do it - although some can and do!). I agree though - we throw away more things than we really ever should. But that's because if we throw them away, we have to buy more, and if we're buying more, that means more money for the company that makes the product. But beyond that, I just don't SEE too many options for the reusable versions of items though (although it is getting better and they're getting a bigger share of the market lately - have you noticed?)
|
My next reusable purchase will be batteries since we have a Wii. Makes sense to buy the reusable kind and get lots more life out of them.
Probably will change my thoughts, but until cloth is what I want. |
I don't blame you and every little bit really does go a long way. And who knows... perhaps you'll get into a rhythm with the cloth diapers and never feel the need to do the throw-aways!
Re-usable batteries are a good idea. I try to use them when I can too - probably not as often as I should or could if I weren't constantly chasing kids, but.... |
Okay, I'm TOTALLY changing the topic, but it *IS* my thread. And y'all can feel free to continue the convo you're having BUT... I'M GOING TO ENGLAND THIS SUMMER!!!!! It's only for 2 weeks for a study abroad trip, but I FINALLY decided to go. I'd been dragging my feet, and had even decided against it due to the cost. But the other day, I was chatting with a classmate, and she mentioned that the cost isn't any more than a class is, and Financial Aid will cover it. I figured I was past the application date, so put it out of my mind. Yesterday I got an email from the program (I'd been placed on their mailing list because I expressed interest) saying that the deadline is Monday, so get our apps in. I talked to Ellie about it last night, and emailed today to see if it was okay that my recommendation would be a little behind due to the timing but the app and deposit would be in the mail tomorrow. The woman emailed me back saying they'd HOLD a spot!!!! Sorry this was so long, but OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!! |
We were at Wal Mart the other day and they had the charger for 20 bucks and then an eight pack of batteries for 21 bucks. $40 dollars to get 8 rechargeable batteries...crazy. However, I am sure that it's cheaper then constantly buying 8 batteries at a time. Decisions decisions.

OMG Eternal that is GREAT NEWS <3 *stows away in luggage*
