Hey, Tango, welcome to Mene. Desire pretty much said everything, so I'll only say welcome again. Oh, and if you'd like to join any RPs, you can easily get in more lengthy posts that way.... you can earn up to 20 gold for a long post, so it's a good "investment," you could say. =P

I'd say that the best way to make gold is to roleplay, and to roleplay lots. The longer your posts, the more gold you make. Although, you might want to check out the newbie guides, as that will probably help you a lot more than I could. ^^
