... which means that I might end up liking this site more. After all, they push so much commercialism at us it's not even funny.
Any other fellow Gaians about? :pirate:

Welcome to Mene, most of the people here where on Gaia at one time or another and many still go on Gaia as well.

Thank you. I've browsed a few other forums since my initial post here and it seems like the vast majority of the userbase has come from Gaia. Though I disapprove of many things they are doing over there, I don't plan to stop being a member. I really don't see this site pushing commercialism at me every two seconds, and giving us virtual items to watch sponsored commercials or visit sponsored worlds. The one thing that makes me sad as that this site seems to have a 'cash' option is well. Why can the currency we earn on-site never be good enough? However I don't see a problem with DONATION items, provided the profits will indeed help the site out.
What do you think about the differences?

My username on Gaia is meatballhead15. These days, when I can, I drop the "15". It was from when I was obsessed with Sailor Moon starting a decade ago!

They only introduced Mennies in the last week or so and they are planning on doing a cash shop but it won't be like Gaia because the staff here don't like what happened to Gaia either. They do need the money to keep the server up and running. At the moment the Mennies are only for the CIs (monthly items).
I haven't been on Gaia since I came here, the staff here are very nice and generally solve problems pretty quick.

Choco- I'm a huge Sailor Moon fan! I'm a walking Sailor Moon encycolpedia, a forum moderator at sailormoon.org, and I even went TO Japan on a Sailor Moon tour. I bought curry from the 'Dark Fruits Supermarket!'
"Mennies" were only incorperated last week, eh? I'd really really really rather they not open a cash store. It messes with the economy of people who have worked hard on the site to get where they're out.
Does this mean that September's Donation Items/Montly Collectibles/Collectible Items are the first ones?

No, I was only on Gaia about a week over a year ago. Not every site is going to turn into Gaia.
No before they did Mennies you just payed for them either with paypal or through the post, now you can use SMS.
There's an announcement here explaining.

You have to admit, though, that both sites seem to have alot in common, and appear to be targeting similar audiences.
It almost seems that this site was made to spite Gaia for all of the recent things they have done that are poor in taste.

There are a lot of avi sites that are newer than Mene and feel similar to mene in some ways, avi sites are popular.

Well, since you seem versed in a handful of avatar-based sites, could you give me a summary (the lowdown) on each one, pros and cons? (URLs would be much appreciated as well!)

I haven't stayed on any besides Mene really, it seems to be the only one I don't get bored of after a week or two. There is a sub forum in general discussion about other avi sites.

There's quite a lot, one of them has a list of all of the current one, ones that aren't going any more and ones that are under development, if you search avatar site list on google it should find it.

Did you know many websites are no longer classifying gaia as a 'forum' or 'community'? It's mostly being classified as just a game. Xd

That's funny. I do remember a day when there WERE NO GAMES on Gaia, and the first flash one was Fishing. The only way to get random events was by luck in the forums... pink links don't even exist anymore. Also, all the 'coolest' items are now cash only, or even worse, though some wierd cash only game where you're not even guaranteed to get the item you really want, so you have to buy more and more of them... geez.
My thoughts toward Gaia along the lines of "Wow, that's a racket." or "Gee, what a sell-out!" have increased exponentially over the five years I've been there.
If this place thrives, I would really like to see it go down a more... noble path.

Welcome!
If you go to General Discussion > Other Forum Sites, there's several threads there dedicated to discussion of Gaia and various other avatar sites. n__n Google "Avatar Site List" and you'll find a list of all similar sites out there (it's the first link you'll see).
Mene is a really nice community, with nice people, great staff, and nice items. I've been here on my main since 2007 and it was my first site like this outside Gaia. So hopefully, you'll enjoy it too. :3

@Jeanie Back in the day, there were only 3 types of random events on Gaia. Pink Links were an instant 3,000 (or was it just 1,000? Eh, inflation!) gold, they 'glowed' in the forums. There were Gift Boxes (now known as pink gift boxes) and Enchanted Trunks (now known as brown gift boxes). One April Fool's Day they made a Blue gift box that said it contained a Platinum Halo but blew up in your face, unable to be removed. They later put the trunk items in brown boxes and made Blue boxes a cross between the two, and made the trunks exclusively for housing items (which didn't exist yet), which of course the golden ones yielding higher value items than the brown.
@Shion Uzuki Hi, and thanks for the welcome. Thanks for the hint, and I'm sure I will eventually migrate over there. However, my very first thought upon joining THIS site was "Wow, this is like how Gaia USED to be...", so I didn't intend to make an off-topic thread, and was just interested in how many folks are crossovers, while kind of getting nostalgic.
 If this thread does appear to be "off topic", perhaps a mod can kindly move it at their discretion? I didn't intend nor predict my 'hi, I'm new' post to elicit so many replies on the specific thing I happened to mention.

Reason: Unsure of a specific number, not wanting to unintentionally put false information!

Oh right, I wasn't there then.
It's not really off topic, I don't think because you're new and most of the newbie threads tend to just be "hi" or something like that, and quite a lot end up being just a list of other newbies saying they've just come from Gaia too.

Yes I am a fellow Gaian and I've just about given up on that site. I go there occasionally now, but I don't enjoy it over there. They banned me on false pretenses even after I bought cash cards to support them. So I kind of semi left there and came here. I only go on there to keep up with friends and things like that. However this site is now my favorite. I only pop into gaia every now and then when I'm bored.
However I seem to have gone off on a tangent and rant.
Now on to the important part. Hello there and welcome to Menewsha I am sure you will have a blast here I know I have. n.n
