For newbie gear, check out the shops, but Hot Gossip and, for a little while longer, the Halloween commons shop have some items that you should be able to afford without too much trouble.

As for advice, don't be afraid to jump into any topic that looks interesting to you - people here are friendly and chatting in the forums is the best way to rack up some gold for new items. Have fun!
