This may sound silly, but when you were choosing which hair you wanted, did you save your avatar a few times? Sometimes you have to save a couple of times. I'm pretty sure that if it was just the cache we'd still be able to see the hair and it'd show up on the profile...

How odd usually clearing your cache or resaving your avatar fixes it. I don't know any other method I'm afraid.
