I was going through some storage boxes from my move into my apartment, and I found a notebook from high school full of notes on the Finnish language. I'd totally forgotten how badly I'd wanted to learn this beautiful language! I studied it for about a year before I had to give up. Without a proper teaching, relying only on the internet, I couldn't progress very far. I'd love to start up again! I also took two years of Spanish in high school, because it was the only foreign language offered. When I was a senior, though, we finally got German and French - but I'd already taken a year of Spanish, so I'd rather progress what I had already learned instead of trying something new.
Do you know any foreign languages - whether bits and pieces, or fluently? What language would you like to learn, and why that one?
I think learning a foriegn language would be a wonderful skill. With the mixing pot of the America I live in, there are so many different cultures that we could learn from. My girlfriend is from the Czech Republic, and she speaks Czech fluently. I like to listen to her talk to her parents with it :3

I would love to learn Manderin and Japanese, because I love reading Manga. However I don't have the ear for languages so i don't think i would do so well.

Someone tried to teach my Dutch and German before but other than a few words I've never really picked it up. I'd like to continue it on, but languages aren't really my forte.
At the moment I can only speak English and French. I can sort of speak Spanish but not really. I'd like to become fluent in Spanish and also learn Italian. Pretty much all the languages in Europe I wish I could learn but don't think I'd be able to.

I know 3 languages + 1 dialect, Chinese, English and some other language, Cantonese dialect.
learning Japanese.
I would like to learn German, French and Italian~
I love learning languages, especially when I travel to those places, it is better to know what they are talking about.
I don't assume English is as international as that.

I used to take Spanish in high school. After that nothing, but when I went to college I really wanted to start doing Sign Language as my second language. Never got around to it :(

It seems Japanese, Italian, and German are common languages to want to learn. But it's never too late to try! Isn't Chinese one of the hardest languages to learn, if not the hardest?

I heard that too, plus there are different types of Chinese which makes it even harder.

Dessertsert~ lol! Exactly the same reason why I learn Japanese. Because of Manga and Anime~ *dances*
Chinese... build on different system than English. Which is why it is harder to learn if you started off from alphabet system.

Cleaning out my room one year I found my notebook that has random Japanese words in it.
I think I wrote them all down from all the Shonen Jump magizines I own and I wanted them all in one place.
I also found my Spanish notes from high school.
xD
So all in all I know bits and pieces of Japanese and Spanish.
The Spanich comes in handy sometimes because my boyfriend is half mexican.
His family sometimes speaks Spanish.
I'd love to learn Itialian and French.
For no particular reason.
Just because I love how beautiful they sound.

I can speak Japanese and English. I was actually
taught Japanese by a friend who is half that and
half Mao. I have a pretty good ear for languages,
actually. I want to continue learning French, as
well as continue my study of Korean. I feel like
I have a pretty good ear for languages, but that
may also just be beacause I grew up immersed
in my culture... And my parents spoke broken
English and Mandarin, so... yup.
I do think that it's beneficial to learn a new language.
The only bad thing is don't become like my friend. Some
times, he'll start speaking another language he knows
(He's trilingual going on four), and not realize it. > _ >
Things get awkward when that happens...
(He's actually on mene. > _ >)
But if you can keep things in check and not forget
that most of your friends barely speak proper
English, theeeen you should be fine. ^ _ ^

Japanese and Chinese have similarities. So if you know kanji from Japanese, 90% the kanji means the same in Chinese.

Everybody here is so cultured they have different languages spoken around them, I never hear other language unless i am at work.
I just wish I could learn spanish to listen in on conversations, since that's all i would use it for i don't think that's a good enough reason to learn it.

I studied French in high school for 3 years and that's it really for formal learning.
I've been learning Japanese on my own for years (slow process for me ).
I took some free Italian classes at the library nearby and that was fun. That class actually opened up more languages being taught. So I ended up taking German and Tagalog as well. They were short classes, just a few weeks.
The guy who taught Italian also knows Turkish which was a nice coincidence since I'll be needing to learn that.
So Japanese is my main language I'm learning, with Turkish being next. I won't be surprised if Turkish surpasses Japanese though since I'll have the ability to be immersed.

Finnish is cool. There is a lot of Finnish heritage in the town where I live, so it would probably be pretty useful to learn. I have also considered learning French since I want to move to Canada someday.

Re, Kanji: It can get confusing though. But it does offer a nice advantage I think.
@Pweep: I'll be moving there (Turkey) in about a week! ;D
I'm hoping it goes well and I'm able to kind of... get out of my shell a bit to immerse myself and learn it. Really just prove to myself that I can learn it. If I can do that, I'll feel better about spending a month in Japan for language courses.

@Keno: Sounds like a jumble! It's not too bad, just takes some getting used to.

Gosh, it's such a beautiful language. I love listening to Finnish music. I have a friend who lives in Finland, although I haven't talked to her for some time. They produce awesome bands, like Nightwish.

Woah, awesome! Is it going to be a big move? I heard the easiest way to learn a language is to just plop yourself right into the culture. Then, you're FORCED to learn and adapt.

Yep, it is nice advantage, as I learn Chinese since young... and I have 50% advancement on Japanese when I learn it few years ago. For, even if I don't know how it pronounce, but I know what it means.
Ikuku is going to Turkey for... how long? is that a trip for education or... fun or... work?
