So I really loved A Game of Thrones and cannot wait to finish all that's out in the series! I am, however, going to give myself a bit of a break, and get through a couple of quicker, less involved reads before I do. I just stared The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Kat- A book festival sounds fabulous! And going to Neil Gaiman's talk must have been so amazing, I'm jealous.

Iltu- Yay! Wizard of Oz is a wonderful series, and there are...14? books in the series, and they're all rather quick reads. <3

I don't think I'll read the whole series. I did finish it last night, and it was a cute, fun adventure, but I didn't really enjoy it and don't think I'd be interested in read the rest of the books.

I just finished the first one yesterday! I bought all the others already (...like before I was halfway through the book NO I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM) but am making myself get through a few other books before I let myself read them. It's not easy. The end of the first one just blew me out of the water. One or two things I expected of the conclusion and a whooooole lot I didn't.
Next three as in two, three, and four, or as in three, four, and five?

I need to take more train journeys. I always end up reading a lot during them. Today I finished Doctor Who book and started We. It's interesting so far although the introduction did something which annoys me by giving an outline of the book I'm about to read. Let me find out for myself!

I also tend to finish my books during the train trips. I think it's because we have so long distances here, I have to travel for 3 hours in a train to get back home, and again 3 h to get back to my rooming house. So at this rate... *calculates*
I dunno. O.O

Heh, if I'm travelling to visit family it's about three hours but even in the hour long journey to visit Edinburgh I end up reading a lot. Mostly to shut out the fact I always end up sitting next to the most annoying passenger plus or minus their screaming children. -_-

"We" is a wonderful book!
Don't worry so much about spoilers in the introduction. Reading is all about the journey, several scientific studies have actually proven that we enjoy a book even more if we've been spoiled a bit.

I finished We yesterday and returned it to the library. The spoilers weren't too bad, they just cut down some of the suspense around the ending. Still enjoyed it though.
Then I started rereading The Hobbit because it's only 68 weeks until the film is released! (I fail at prioritising)

I pretty much forgot about the film. I guess that's one more thing for me to look forward to! I'm sure I'll reread it at some point this year too.

Can't wait for the movie! :eager: I hope it's as good as LOTR.
But damn, I have only 10 pages left to read from my latest book. :1 Can't finish it though, any tips for the last reading burnout? :D The book is so good that I've read it too much, too fast. :1
----------
Ok, problem solved, forced myself to read it! :D I cried in the end, it was so sad. :(

What book was that again, Isendor?
I've never really been excited about book-to-movies. I can't get excited about movies at all. My vision is always different from how the director plans everything, so it's tough to get my hopes up about any of it. I'm sure I'll go see The Hobbit in theatres, but it'll just be yet another movie to me.

Kang Chol-hwan & Pierre Rigoulet - The Aquariums of Pyongyang. Found it from a market and I had to buy it, and now I read it too fast! :D I don't know, any good book can feel very frustrating to me if I read too much at one time. But now it's over and I'm glad I read it! :D Have you ever heard of it?
Oh yeah, and I kind of keep the movies and the books separated from each others, I handle them as totally different stories. LOTR was quite easy to handle so, because the book is so much longer! :D And they sing more in it, I had to admit that I skipped most of Legola's musicals because I felt a bit... awkward. :D

I'm rarely excited about films at all but the ones I am excited about at the moment do all seem to be based on books; Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (okay, barely based on the books but it's still fun) and The Hobbit. XD

Iltu:
With regards to Room, Donoghue's styling of the child narrator drove me absolutely mad. In some aspects, I think she attempted to make the little boy too "original"-- his language (to "waterfall" the milk?) was eccentric with no real purpose or cause, and she spent more time developing these quirks than developing him as a character with whom to empathize. He wasn't a believable child, or a believable human... moreover, his overly stylized voice lent nothing to the novel. His odd diction choices didn't develop the character, develop a theme, or give insight into anything. Instead, they drove me to distraction. I can't stand wasted words. :-x
:glomp::heart: Please try Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close! Foer's narrator is similarly unusual for a little boy... however, his quirks, odd-language, and tangential thoughts all make the novel more deeply human. They feel natural, if unusual-- echoing something about real experience.
I didn't connect to Room at all, sadly. :(
Oh well.
Hey, everyone! I just read Brave New World! And was actually a little disappointed? I feel like such a whiner... but I expected so much from Huxley, and I have anticipated reading this book since around age 13 or so. I put it off, though, assuming it would appear in some classroom setting. I love discussing novels with a group. Anyway...
Some passages mattered me, and the premise was interesting... but my socks are still firmly on my feet. I wanted my socks to be knocked off. Anyone have any thoughts on the novel?

I have been in a perpetual state of excitement about The Hobbit movie for the last few months. I have high hopes for it. If it's half as good as the LotR films, I will be pleased. (I am, of course, hoping that it will be AS good as LotR. But that will be difficult for them to pull off, even with such a great cast and crew.)
There was one lull where I was disappointed more than looking forward to the movies because David Tennant was not casted as Thranduil, but now I'm all worked up again. The dwarves all look fantastic!
Colors- You always have such good thoughts on books! You are very articulate and are fabulous at pinpointing what you did and did not like, I rather wish I was better at that.
I will get to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close eventually. I just have roughly a zillion other books to get through first, but one day I WILL get to it. I've been meaning to for several years now.
Okay, finished Skinned by Robin Wasserman earlier in the week. It was the end of a trilogy, and boy what a letdown. Just... just augh. It wasn't horrible and I enjoyed it, but I was expecting more. More character development, resolution, conclusion, all that sort of thing.
I finished The Tempest yesterday, and am struggling with what I thought of it. It was a fun read, well done, as any Shakespeare play, the plot was good, and the whole thing was a grand adventure. However, the ONLY characters I found likable were Gonzalo and Ariel. Caliban was a horrid little git, Miranda and Ferdinand were incredibly foolish, Prospero was a manipulative and self-centered douche, Sebastian and Antonio were terrible people, Alsonso had no personality, and Trinculo and Stephano were horribly annoying. I have never been able to choose a favorite character from each Shakespeare play I have read prior to this, so that was a let-down.

@Knerd -- if i didn't mention it before, I love the cow in your sig. I may have mentioned it already, though cause it's one of my favorite internet spawned picture thingies ever. (Well, and since my short term memory is so awful.) It's just such a winsome little thing.
I wish I could read books during my commute, but I get motion-sickness. I just subscribed to audible's book service, though so at least I have some audio books if I want them. And I'm making a point to only buy fiction, since I never seem to pick enough of it up.
At Border's close out sale I did buy a copy of Inferno by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven. When I read their two book revisiting of Dante's allegory a couple of years ago it just made me go out and read all of the main Medieval allegories again. Which reminds me that I should actually get copies of them for my own personal library. Inferno and Escape from Hell aren't perfect, but I've always thought they were a good writing team and enjoyed their work together.
I really haven't read anything lately, though outside of books on health and food. I had a really, really badly written one on high fructose corn syrup (There really wasn't anything available on the topic except scholarly papers on it, when I bought it.) It was absolutely painful to try and get through. A couple weeks after I gave up I found a lecture by the author, and his delivery in that was just as bad as his writing. ._.
I should at least read that copy of Blink by Malcolm Gladwell that's been sitting there on my shelf waiting for me to finish the HFCS book.

Heh, I'm always slightly jealous of the books for other subjects when I'm picking up my textbooks or stationary from the university bookshop.
I finished The Hobbit and now have a week to finish Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy before the film comes out (UK release date). I've even stopped watching the new footage being released because of spoiler warnings for the book/TV series. >.<

Anyone else plowing through books like crazy right now?
Between the start of school and my own leisure reading, I've been finishing about two books per week lately. I'll have to update my list soon, otherwise I'll forget them all.
Just finished The Hunger Games yesterday. I had signed up for PanemOctober and wanted to know what all the fuss was about, so I bought a cheap pdf copy of the book online. It wasn't half bad, but it was very fast reading. I probably would have liked it more if I was about 5 years younger, but I always feel that way about YA novels. Maybe the other two books in the series will really hook me in?
