Yreka, I'm studying Frankenstein - what did you make of it? : )
@Veelana - I have The God Delusion sitting on my bedside. I've read it once already, but I keep dipping into it. I love what he writes at the end - it made me giddy the first time round. And it probably will again, when I go over it.
I was quite happy that it was different than what a lot of popular culture has created. The thing that made it less enjoyable to me was the fact that it was for school, as you seem to be reading it for also...
Gah. I want to read The God Delusion. If nothing else, because Richard Dawkings amuses me.
@Veelana - I don't know where I stand with him on that front. My parents are Christians, but they don't really practice, and I have fond memories of euphemised Bible stories and singing hymns every assembley, and at Christmas carols... But, funnily enough, R.E. lessons when I was about, oh, seven-or-so usurped any Faith I had (to be honest, I was more interested in finding fairies at the bottom of the garden). I think it was after we looked at Diwali, Rama and Sita, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and were moving onto the five Ks of Sikhism that I began to be puzzled over how they couldn't all be right, and yet everyone believed with equal strength that they were... which either meant the particulars were very bland and humanity had fabricated upon them through so many branches, or they were all wrong. So I just sort of distanced myself and carried on learning. ^ ^;
The children situation is so difficult... but I think I will educate any future children of mine about the religions I know, and just revel in the culture. I'll let them make up their own minds. But heck, I don't even know what the father of these hypothetical children will be like. xD;
I think Dawkins over-inflates the issue a bit, but I'm a bit tired and can't say how. It's a lot to do with thinking, if I really want to make a decision, I should spend time researching psychology's take on moral development, and anything to do with children and religion, first.
@Yreka - For A-level exams. *nods* We're doing Wuthering Heights alongside. Usually, for me, studying things in-depth (unless it's clear you're extracting useless dribble that isn't really there, as it seemed the case with some poems at the lower level of GCSE) makes things more enjoyable for me. ^ ^; That's usually what people complain about, doing a book to death...
I read something about Dawkins looking and sounding like Professor Yaffle from Bagpuss. xDD Plus he introduces such extraordinary things, which keeps me hooked (poems by A.A. Milne, any quote by Douglas Adams...)
He doesn't say you shouldn't educate your kids about religion, I think his bottom line is mainly that nobody talks about "liberal kids" or "darwinistic kids" because you don't expect to have their own opinion in that matter.
My fear is thet religion alway provides easy answers "Its that way because god made it like that", and thats what I want to keep my son from experiencing.
I think (and Dawkins says so too, in the last chapter) that you can be an atheist and still keep to our cultureb (holydays, sunday's rest...), so my son will (hopefully) experience a childhood filled with awesome memories and no brainwash.
@Titenya: I like the second one best, where you meet Will for the first time :-)
I read it every year right befor christmas :-)
I can't remember everything I have read so far this year, but I shall start the list with what I do remember! I'm going back through my bookshelves, rereading all my own books before buying new ones. I hope textbooks count, those I have had to read for Uni. Also, I won't be counting the stories I have read to my daughter, as we read one a night. It's part of the routine. Though those are never more than 20 pages or so, and have pictures.

@Secret- yeah, I sometimes do that too, I'm reading something rather boring and a more interesting book comes along. . . like I was reading Little Women until I found the Agatha Christie books in my school library. ^^
@knerd - thank you for adding me to the front page :-) This feels pretty official :-)
@Arkeyla: looks like you're goig to get done with your 50 books befor summer...
Would you want to do a personal challenge? Just for fun - I'd like to try to read more pages than you. I'll publish the rest of my page count in a bit (have to dig out some of the books first). Are you up for this?
I'm currently reading the Life of Pi by Yann Martel, and I was hesitant at first because everyone seemed to be reading it, but it is so good. It reminds in the way of Anne Michaels Fugitive pieces, because the novel is full of Anecdotes and just random information...it's so good. Actually I suggest you read both.
@JoieD: I read a lot of fanficion and e-books, too - I don't count them, though, because they are kinda hard to count. So I'm just posting the printed stuff I read - and the page count wasn't so bad, I just checked it on amazon for the books I didn't have at home anymore (part of the "sword of truth" series was borrowed). I only did it because these books are so massive, witch might make my list look wrong...
@Secret: you seem to really like that Chuck Palahniuk guy. What's his stuff like? I'm always interested to find new awesome authors :-)
@Secret:
Hoo boy, that's a lot of Palahniuk. Mind if I give you a few recommendations? By reading that much of an author at once, I'd imagine that your perception of their writing will start to get twisted. It might do you some good to read other pieces of transgressive fiction so that you can use them as a comparison.
Notes From the Underground by Dostoyevsky
Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller
Our Lady of the Flowers by Genet
Glamorama by Bret Easton Ellis
Kiss Me, Judas by Will Christopher Baer
Junkie by William S. Burroughs
The Toy Collector by James Gunn
The Dog of the Marriage by Amy Hempel
Well, I just bought Twilight yesterday, and finished it too. It was the first time I've read it and I really like it. Though, Bella does kinda bug me. She seems like a person who is too used to getting her way and doesn't like it when she doesn't get what she wants.
@Veelana: I don't count fanfiction, either, but I read a lot of books off project gutenberg because I work on a computer. I could go to the library or bookstore to find their page counts, but I don't really care how many pages I read.
Ug, I really need to diversify my reading, too. I get into phases where I just want to read everything by a particular author or in a particular genre, right up until I get sick of it. Anyone else do this?
@knerd: I know what you mean - but once I've found an author I really like, I just have to read whatever I can get my dirty little paws on that is done by that author, so I totally understand Secret :-)
@JoieD: I can't read a complete book on the screen - I tried! My eyes get tired and my back starts to hurt. Also, there's nothing like snuggling up in bed with a book... I'd need a really light screen about the size of a paperback to try this again.
Really glad that its working for you, though :-)
he - i just found Samuel Langhorne Clemens' essays there *starts reading...*
I just want to keep track of my page count, btw - I just want to know, because I like really big books with 600+ pages and I have no idea how much I read.
If thats graphic novels as in manga, I could totally do that xD
Although I really want to read more proper books. I buy them and neglect them >.>;
Meh I will actually try and do this too!
& Secret! I need to read Chuck Palahniuk's other books, I loved Fight Club so much *w* <3
@Arkeyla: looks like you're goig to get done with your 50 books befor summer...
Would you want to do a personal challenge? Just for fun - I'd like to try to read more pages than you. I'll publish the rest of my page count in a bit (have to dig out some of the books first). Are you up for this?
Sure, why not? I'm always up for a challenge. I actually have two more books to add to that list as well... I should do that now!
Yay! I love challenges...
Be warned, though - the speed is going to pick up once I'm done with the sword of truth cycle - the current book is so boring, I don't even want to finish it. But I just can't leave the story arc at that point, so I'm fighting my way through to get it done.
I started on the pandemia chronicles by dave duncan for an "in between" read...
