Hide your face,
so the world will
never find you!

Plot

Set during nineteenth century London, England the Victorian Era is in full swing and the wealthy are having the time of their lives. Aristocratic families from far and wide have come to celebrate the eighteenth birthdays of the Tremaine children, Margaret and Michael. This masquerade is not only a celebration of the young Earl and Countess' coming of age, but also to entertain possible suitors to continue the family line. The celebration will last for seven days and if Michael does not find a potential wife then all the family wealth and titles will go to his sister and her future husband. The pressure is building upon the young earl, but in the magic of the night and mysteries hidden by the masks anyone can lose their senses.

Setting

The Tremaine mansion can be considered a very imposing structure, but nonetheless very beautiful. The interior could be considered baroque or even over done in ornamentation while the exterior is in the neoclassical architectural style of the Victorian times. The ballroom is brightly lit with crystal chandeliers; its large winding stair case leads to an equally beautiful dining area. The gardens are quite large with an abundance of rose bushes and there are wooden benches centered around a very beautiful fountain. At the end of the night (meaning around midnight to one in the morning) a guest may return to their own estates, but most are more so inclined to stay in one of the mansions numerous guest rooms. The masquerade will be celebrated for several days.

Every face a different shade . . .
Masquerade!
Look around -
there's another
mask behind you!

Characters

Username: Umi-No-Tenshi
Character Name: Michael Tremaine
Character Age (18-20s please): 18
Character Appearance (Descriptions are fine): .:.Click.:.
Character Mask: In Picture
Character Personality: Although bred and groomed for the refinement and solemnity of the arrogance of the aristocrat, Michael very much unlike a stuck up snob. Very down to earth and friendly he finds far more joy in playing his violin or taking walks through the garden than flaunting his wealth. Although often times he wished that he had never been born into such a strict caste, growing up in such an enormous house and in such a cold and dignified lifestyle never seemed to damper Michael's sunny disposition. He cares deeply for his twin sister and is very loyal to his family although he finds this whole arrangement ridiculous.
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): As a child he and his sister were often left in the care of some nanny or another while their mother attended gossip laced parties and their father was busy with business. The only thing he had to chase away the feelings of loneliness and resentment was his sister, born minutes after him. Playing hide and seek among the endless halls and uncountable rooms were a fond way of passing the time. They often found their amusement in playing practical jokes on their nannies and tutors, the game became almost a challenge between the two to see who could be the first to drive the pesky adult mad. Alas, as soon as were barely out of childhood both of them were whisked away into the dizzying world of prim and proper. Margaret confined to skirts and laces while he was trapped with cigar smokers and coin counters. Learning all the proper manners from which spoon to use to courtship were almost more than he could handle. Especially courtship. Women batting their eyelashes practically threw themselves at him once he 'filled out'. The very though of his sister having to act in such a degrading way made him sick to his stomach and that is why he is quite determined to find the right spouse during the celebrations so he wouldn't have to force his sister to go through such travesty. But anyone can be entranced by the secrets of the mask.

Character Name: Margaret Tremaine
Character Age (18-20s please): 18
Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine): Click
Characters Mask (Picture and/or description): Click
Character Personality: Margaret is very similar in personality to her brother, though it might be expected being that they are twins. She loves to sing and play the piano alongside Michael’s violin. But unlike her brother she’s very practical and knows how to get what she wants and isn’t afraid of using her ‘assets’ to get them.
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): As a child she and her brother were often left in the care of some nanny or another while their mother attended gossip laced parties and their father was busy with business. The only thing she had to chase away the feelings of loneliness and resentment was her brother, born minutes before her. Margaret confined to skirts and laces. Learning all the proper manners from which spoon to use to courtship were almost more than he could handle. Especially courtship. Men with their cigar smoke and ‘ulterior motives’ practically threw themselves at her once she 'filled out'. The very though of her brother having to act in such a degrading way made her sick to her stomach, but such is life. She hopes that her brother will find a good spouse so she won’t have to. She enjoys her freedom a little too much. But anyone can be entranced by the secrets of the mask.

Username: Devilfern
Character Name: Theodosia Asafoetida Dawes
Character Age (18-20s please): 18
Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine): Theodosia - painting by the Deviantart user JanaschiDoe-like brown eyes and rich copper colored hair. Theodosia is slim and attractive, although her appearance is more child or fairy-like than elegant, much to her dismay.
Characters Mask (Picture and/or description): Golden Mask
Character Personality: Theodosia is vain and rather empty-headed. She is considered beautiful by many, but it is an empty beauty - she has very little actual personality, like an empty vase. She does, however, love life and enjoys it to the fullest. Theodosia lives vivaciously, moving from one society ball to the next, flirting just outrageously enough to get people talking, but not enough to be considered smutty. She loves to be the center of attention, practices her pretty smiles in the mirror, and dances with abandon. Theodosia, however, has no room for malice in her head, and is kind without discrimination, except for a touch of snobbery. Occasionally, if one gets to know her well enough, a glimmer of deeper character shows through her glamor. On those rare occurrences she is quite shy, and incredibly tender. Her clothing is always of the highest and most elegant quality, but in her air of oblivious zeal for everything she emits an aura of glittery beauty that makes everything around her a little bit more beautiful itself.
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): Theodosia was born into a very rich family. She is the only daughter of Robert and Emilia Dawes, who control a very respectable estate. Her parents are almost entirely indifferent to her, and give her almost free range in society. Theodosia is free to flirt and cavort at balls all she likes, which suits her perfectly.

Character Name: Allen Valainis
Character Age (18-20s please): 18
Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine):Allen
Characters Mask (Picture and/or description)::'D
Character Personality: Allen is stubborn and short tempered, but has a good heart and likes to see nothing but the good in people. However, sometimes he can be a bit too trusting. He may seem cold and standoffish, but the truth is he's just shy, even if he might not like to admit it. Allen's way of being communicative is to be sarcastic and harsh in his remarks. What others call cynicism, he likes to call good old-fashioned honesty. He's positive in his own special way...
Allen is very intelligent, and due to his privileged upbringing, is very well educated. He soaks up facts like a sponge and never forgets(Like an elephant :'D).
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): Allen's father, Harris Valainis, came from a wealthy family, but his mother, Elizabeth Valainis, did not. Because of this, Allen's grandparents have refused to talk to him and his father, and many other wealthy families pretend Allen doesn't exist. Since his mother was merely "a scarlet women with no pedigree", and they think of Allen with similar pretexts, his grandparents refuse to give Allen's father the rest of his inheritance(Harris was allowed part of his inheritance after his 18th birthday, before he got married). Consequently, Allen will be left with no money after his father runs out, and will be forced to get a job and make his way through the real world as a commoner. Allen doesn't mind this, and, unlike his father, has never had any real attachment to money in the first place. When Allen was ten, Elizabeth died of consumption. Harris stayed positive, however, and continued to teach Allen to be a decent, tolerant person, who wouldn't look down on anyone because of social statues.
Allen would rather not be at a Masquerade ball, but feels obligated to attend, since his father laid a guilt trip on him.

Character Age (18-20s please):22

Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine):

Characters Mask (Picture and/or description):

Character Personality: Shes quiet and shy. SHe loves to read and play with animals.

Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): Alana was raised as a countesses daughter. She is very well mannered as she was taught. She hates her dutys and would rather spend all her time outside with animals. When her mother and father found out about this ball they made sure she was one of the first people invited. Her parents are the count and countess of monte Christo. They are totally devoted to there daughter hoping she will one day be a sucessful bride to some rich man.

Character Name: Zariya Galvan de la Cruz (pronounced "Zuh-rye-uh")
Character Age (18-20s please): 24
Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine): Zariya is of an average height, with a build of wider hips that balance out a slightly generous bosom. She has light brown eyes that sometimes border on golden, a pert nose and a generous mouth over a slightly square chin, throwing her face slightly off balance. In society she would most certainly not be called "pretty," but rather, handsome. Her true vanity, though, lies in her mane of dark, glossy locks, which she attempts to wear as much down as British society will allow.
Characters Mask (Picture and/or description): Purple Mask
Character Personality: Zariya is not shy, but does seem to limit friendliness to societal nature -- at least, with women. She seems more at easy with men and their conversation, even though it does take them awhile to warm up to a "female" who seems more educated than other women of her society. However, women tend to mistake her reticence with them, and her friendliness with men, as something past flirtation (and most women don't seem to like that behavior at all).
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): Zariya was born in Spain, to a British-born mother (who also had British and Spanish parentage) and Spanish father who perished on a voyage to America a few years ago. However, she is currently living with an uncle who is a lawyer. While that would not put her in aristocratic circles normally, rumor has it that not only were her parents royalty of some kind (perhaps a Duke and Duchess, the word around town says), and with old money, but that her brother provides her with quite a stipend.

Zariya's brother is Alcazar Galvan de la Cruz, known as "Galvan," the recently famous author whose adventure stories that comment on British society not only captivate men, but whose touches of romance woo the lady readership. However, Alcazar is said to be a recluse, holing himself up in some country estates, while he continues to write. He depends upon Zariya to make public appearances for him, not only to help keep interest in his work alive, but also to assuage fans. Zariya is more than happy to comply, as she seems as knowledgeable about his work as Galvan would be.

While her native tongue is Spanish, she has a masterful command of the English language, much like her brother. She speaks with just a lilt of an accent that seems more like the way she is, rather than due to her native language.

Character Name: Nathaniel Wysing
Character Age (18-20s please): 19
Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine):Nathaniel
Characters Mask (Picture and/or description): mask
Character Personality:Nathaniel is well-behaved and knows his manners but he can be somewhat blunt when making controversial statements. He is highly educated and therefore sometimes feels a bit "above" other people his age because of their "lack of education." Despite this he can be quite sweet and is, in general most polite when dealing with young ladies. He is very open when it comes to his sexuality and hasn't decided which gender he likes better yet.
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): Nathaniel was raised by his uncle Elliot since he was very young. His uncle pushed his education very hard and Nathaniel turned out to be very intelligent even at a young age. Some would say he was a prodigy. Because his uncle never married and had children of his own the money that would have been in his children's inheritance will all go to Nathaniel, which is a fairly good amount. Nathaniel respects his uncle despite some of the ridicule the man gets for never marrying or having children. He won't stand for people talking bad about him especially those he considers "uneducated."

Many would describe him like a two sided coin. One side will show you the truth while the other shows you what you want to see.
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): After years of mistreatment and neglect he uses his mask as a shield from the world. From a very young age he was molded into the princely figure or the aristocrat class. On the outside he appears to be cool and collected but his inner self is broken mess. He hates being the center of attention though can’t avoid the spotlight. He is the only child, a high class and wealthy family the archdukes of The Netherlands.

Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine): Declan is a suprisingly tall man for society, coming in just shy of six feet. For all of his height he is quite graceful and cuts a stunning figure on the dance floor. His dark black hair is hardly worth commenting upon, as it is so common place. He has expressive blue eyes that seem to sparkle and dance when he smiles, which he does quite often. While born into the aristocracy, and not one to work at anything physical he does have a fairly muscular though lean body.
Characters Mask (Picture and/or description): Declan plans to wear a different mask each night of the masquerade. Below is the schedule:
Evening 1: (which he is running late too :) ) the phantom-style vertical half mask shown here.

Evening 2: A fiery halfmask.

Evening 3: The sun and moon mask.

Evening 4: Something more simple, a basic black halfmask.

Evening 5: Continuing the halfmask theme, this Cyrano de Bergerac mask, very akward for kissing!

Evening 6: A courtjester halfmask

Evening 7: A see through mask not not block his face

Character Personality: Declan is a jovial man that enjoys a good jest, particularly at the expense of someone that is unaware. He is very vain about his fairly mediocre appearance, and sees no reason why woman should not fawn over him like they are fond of doing in the novels that he reads.
Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least): The Vara family is of the old aristocracy dating back many years. They are quite well known in the upper crust of society, and so Declan often encounters many family friends at balls and galas that he has attended recently. Declan only recently began to take an interest in the "society" scene when he came into his inheritance last year. Since that time by all accounts he has become an upstanding member of the society, well liked by most of the men. He began attending galas and balls about 6 months ago and hasn't really missed one since. While his family is well known not much is known about Declan due to his disinterest in the society until only just recently. Those that have spent time with him over the past year report that he is quite boisterous and enjoys many different recreational activities, from drinking to cards to hunting and other sport.

Character Appearance (Pictures and descriptions are fine):
Lady Mareen has a thin oval face, her skin is pale with hints of red in her cheeks, She wears no makeup believing it to be distasteful on most people, herself in particular. Lady Mareen does not believe herself to be very pretty, unknowingly she has an unearthly aura attributing to her being albino. She wears her long silver hair in a simple updo as is appropriate. Her dress is a Dark midnight blue with silver trim. It's a simple dress but very elegant as the trimming is delicately placed.
Her eyes are a pale yet striking shade of brown.

Characters Mask (Picture and/or description): http://lh6.ggpht.com/_TdBHNN7SItQ/R0...112507_005.jpg

Character Personality: She is a rather reserved person preferring to sit and watch the moon cross the sky at night or sit under trees and listening to the sounds of the Earth growing older. Kind and patient she hates fighting but can stand strong when she needs to.

Character Bio (Five sentences at the absolute least):
Lady Mareen was raised without many friends as she was a secluded child, being an albino and different from everyone around her. She is an avid reader and nature lover. She goes out on walks mostly at night with her maid servant Lini as the sun burns her skin easily. She is intelligent and has come to accept her position in life. Frail but strong willed she can be shy in front of new people. Her parents insisted that at her age she should be getting out more and insisted she go to the Tremaine twin's party. A family friend Mareen has had little to do with since she would keep to the library when visitors were over. Mareen was unable to leave at the allotted time and has arrived late to the party.

~.:.It has come to my attention that some in the thread may want or need help posting in a style that compliments and reflects the Victorian era that they are placed in. I have compiled some research and if anyone has any more information they may post here as well.

Also, this thread if for members to plan out character development and plot ideas with each other so don't feel shy!.:.~

awsome idea. Now I can explain some more of my character to those who are having problems understanding her.

She has spent her life obeying her parents and following proper etiquette. She hates her life the way it has been so she finds ways to sidesweep some of the common customs. So therefore she does a few odd things such as taking her shoes off to make a guy happy. She gave him a kiss on the nose again trying to sidestep a custom. She makes sure the things she does are not noticed by other people who are around. SHe does have a sence of pride. And of course she does make sure her parents wont see her.

XD

btw is my victorian language ok? Im doin the best I can copying from gone with the wind.

Excellent, Umi! Love it! I also love the Language of Flowers link. Could prove useful. (I'll add any others I come across.)

And Talitha: It doesn't matter whether other RPers or characters "get" your character or not. What you just mentioned about your character may be all fine and dandy, but other characters in this RP won't know this type of information until you interact with them and "show" them what your character is like (as opposed to "telling" them, which is a whole other thing about writing).

Other characters are going to react to what your character can be seen doing (or saying, if they're close enough). And in this setting, you have to understand that Victorian aristocracy, and really, most people on the whole in this time period, knew their place VERY well. They were VERY concerned with appearances and propriety. (Now, we all know they had their wild sides, too, but these displays were reserved for VERY intimate moments between people, and when I mean intimate, I mean, in the bedroom, usually.)

Heck, even the nobility in England nowadays is very stuffy and maintains a lot of decorum, which is slowly being worked away at, with, really, perhaps the advent of Princess Diana and all she brought (not that she wasn't classy, because she was, but she was very much down to earth). These class distinctions in England have been in place for a very long time, and to be an "odd duck" would frankly shun you from a lot of society.

That being said, it's a fine line to walk for a character to go from "odd duck" to "interestingly charming" or the like.

And finally, regarding your question about your speech patterns. Gone With the Wind is a novel (and movie) that takes place during and after the civil war in America. While technically it could be place in the Victorian period, it was really a reflection of the antebellum southern society in America.

This RP takes place in England. A Victorian England where society was quite different than in America, in some aspects, especially since there are nobles and aristocrats. The language, like anything, was more refined. I'm not saying you have to find a link on the language of that era -- goodness knows I don't know all the words either, but, I try and think how a high-born woman, brought up in a Victorian British (or in my character's case, Spanish, as well) setting might speak.

But sometimes it's just the small things: "Thank you" instead of "thanks," or "Goodbye" instead of "See ya!" Well, you get the point.

Perhaps all the links Umi shared are too much to bother with, and one wants to play their character as they want. Which is fine, but it was a setting created by Umi, and one that I respect her for and try to play my character in that setting, as best as my character, given who she is, can be, and as best, as I, the RPer can write. If that includes looking up an extra bit of information, then so be it. (My husband makes fun of me for looking up too much information, but ... what can I say?! ^_^)

I take my RP very seriously (but that doesn't mean I don't have fun, trust me, I sometimes tremble in anticipation of how I will react to someone else's post, or vice versa). I respect the written word and the game creator (in this case, Umi) to not give this RP as much attention as anything else. *shrug* But that's the way I am.) Oh, and I also take my writing seriously -- a glance over anything I've written not only ensures that my character's voice is consistent, but also that most typos and misspellings are at a minimum (it makes reading and reacting to it, so much more enjoyable).

Okay, so I'm a little long winded, but ... just some thoughts I needed to share. Anyone can take them or leave them. ^_^

Talitha, that is very interesting....

I haven't ever played a Victorian RP either, *shrug* but I think that's part of the fun of roleplaying. You can create a new character for any situation .... and you take your cues from those around you.

The other day I came across some people who were talking about starting a Steampunk RP, dealing with the Aztecs, I think. Wow, sounded completely foreign to me. Not that I don't think I couldn't RP it, but personally, to me ... I see Steampunk as very visual, and difficult to describe, in a way (not that I haven't seen it done in books, but I digress). But ya know, if it were a good group and an interesting story, I would figure it out and try my best to follow the other people that did know what they were doing. (And why I also try to do at least a little research.)

That's how you grow as an RPer ... changing characters, changing situations, exploring your writing ability, not just with words, but how you our your character reacts to something, even with dialogue and mannerisms that aren't yours.

I've played some evil, creepy characters to silly, happy-go-lucky characters -- many deviating from myself, and many with different styles. I think it's fun to be something different and new in many situations.

Not that I don't have my favorites. I've been playing Reeny for a long time (though I have yet to play her on here, and don't know if I will), but I will always have room for new characters.

But, the number is starting to get a little unmanageable. I mean, I did start text-based RPing 14 years ago. That's a long time to rack up quite a cast of characters and personas. *laughs*

yeah I so know what you mean. Normally Alanas got super powers or shes a tough bounty hunter whose scared of nothing. Playing a girly girl who doesent want to be what she was raised to be is very interesting for me. I actually think I like doing it this way. When I do a role play I love I tend to save my profiles so that I can use them later for other role plays.

Currently Im doing several vampire Alanas. SO far theres one I think ill keep and save because its my favorite. Ive also got a demon Alana whose story is very interesting and I do plan on saving her. THe thing is when I do a role play I keep it as part of Alanas life.

Example: When my bounty hunter Alana got pregnant I stopped using her for a few months. Enough time for 2 role play years to go by and then brought her back as a mother trying to earn a living for her child. I like to save her role plays as part of her Bio. So that shes never the same. She changes.

If you truly "know what I mean" then how come all of your characters are basically ... the same character (even if she has grown, or not) ... with the same name?

I don't mean to be rude, I just find it interesting that for someone who claims to have RPed for as long as you have, that you wouldn't have at least attempted to change the names of your characters and even personality traits.

Maybe it's because you have played in many different RPs, and it's easier to keep track of, but ... personally, IMO, that seems to limit creativity, and in turn, limits growth in the RPer, and eventually, limits growth in characters (even if you did say your "Alana"s have changed over the years).

*shrugs* However, these are just my thoughts on the subject, and are perhaps just my opinions, but ... I have been doing this for awhile, and played with some amazing RPers whom I personally have learned a lot from.

*shrugs again*

I know my character Allen probably doesn't reflect the Victorian Era very well, and I apologize for that. I did research a little on the topic before I started posting, but nothing on etiquette or meal time. D': I'll definitely be sure to read all of it as soon as I can.

I've never roleplayed in a Victorian setting, and thought it would be a nice challenge (I tend to stay away from roleplays that involve settings and customs I'm not too familiar with). I hope everyone will stay patient with me as I try to develop Allen's character to reflect the Victorian era better. We have some great writers in this RP and It's a treat to be apart of it. :'D

It's okay, Confection. As I mentioned before, I've never RPed in a Victorian setting either. I usually RP in a fantasy one. But, hey, I think it's fun to do research.

All I really know is what I've gathered from movies and some books, and from expounding from and slightly relaxing the rules of the Regency period, which came shortly before the Victorian (during the longer Georgian period). Regency is Jane Austen, really, for simple purposes, and I LURV Jane Austen ...!

I adore period pieces, especially if they're set in that time period in England, so ... while I may have never RPed, I understand mannerisms and the like of that time. ^_^

I like your charater hes very kool in my opinion. In a way him and Alana are alike. There both fighting against the system I guess you would say.

Truthfully, I have to say that I've never RPed in a Victorian setting either. ^_^;; I really had a craving to be in one, but after a time just decided to make one myself.

I hope that everyone is enjoying it so far. We certainly do have an array of wonderful RPers. :3

Oh, and here is something interesting:

Hah, very cool, Umi!

Love it!

Here's a funny story, related to this:

I was thinking of the title to make Galvan's next book, and the name "Gaviota" came to me ... dunno why. Thought it would be interesting to name a ship that, although I have heard girls actually called that. So, I went searching for a little background (even though I actually do really speak Spanish, so I knew that it was a seagull, but just wondered what else I could find). There is actually a Spanish Victorian book called "La Gaviota" which I found on googlebooks, which has been translated, and the end of the second page of the first chapter has a footnote about the Spaniards and that "proverb" I used not too long ago in the RP thread.

True story! Fun times!

Well, that I mean to say, I used the proverb which I found in the book. Hope that didn't come out wrong, but just thought the whole thing was cool.

Thanks, Umi! A little research goes a long way! ^_^

Another link:

Miniature Dogs in Victorian Times

I know, that's probably not relevant at all, but .... just something I came across. ^_^

Oh, and another I found here, about cats (and you'll have to excuse the HORRIBLE typos and grammar, but still somewhat informative):
Quote:
In Victorian times, they were once again warmly welcomed into the home and were seen as loving companions' pets. Victorian cats impressed artists, writers, scientists, and philosophers of the day. Queen Victoria loved cats, and because of this. Their good reputation was reaffirmed; there it remains to this day.

Well, the setting for this RP does say the masquerade is for seven days and we are only currently on the first evening, so I think this RP still has quite a lot of life left in it.
