Adeline sighed as she stepped out of the comforting heat of the car and into the cold wind at the entrance of the swanky ski resort her parents had insisted on visiting for winter break. A family vacation... Adeline said, a scowl forming on her doll like features. A family vacation that my parents wanted...
She heaved her suitcases into the hotel lobby, the books she had brought weighing them down considerably. She still had an english paper to turn in the day after break that she had yet to finish. Or start. It wasn't like Adeline to procrastinate on her school work. She was after all the first in her class as well as one of the most involved in school activities.
Shaking her head to clear it of school, Adeline waited patiently as her parents got their room keys. A bellhop appeared, placing her baggage on a hotel cart. "Fifth floor." Her mother called back to Adeline, tossing her a room key. "You're father and I will be down here. We have some clients to meet. We'll meet you up there later." She called.
Right... Adeline sighed. Family vacation...

Nathanial Kholay sighed as he let a bellhop take his bags and the valet park his black Toyota Prius. The resort was a nice choice, considering it was his sister and her fiancee who had picked it.
They always were the type to luxuriate everything to the extreme.
Sighing, Nathanial made his way inside carrying nothing but his leather coat, almost like a trench coat in style, and a slim laptop, dark emerald in color. Looking around, he saw many rich folk on their cellphones talking to what he assumed were clients, as well as many couples with the 'honey-mooners' glow upon their faces heading out to the slopes. Smiling, Nathanial was glad that those he saw at the Resort so far seemed to either keep to themselves, the restaurant, the bar, or the slopes; it would give him a chance to catch up on his plans for his new teaching job as well as the novel he's been writing for nearly two years now.
Breaking his eyes from the sight around him, not wishing to seem strange or creepy to the strangers around him, Nathanial patiently leaned back against a pillar, waiting for his sister Amelia and his soon to be brother-in-law Jack Forrester to come from the front desk with their room keys.
Roughly ten minutes later, Amelia appeared before him flashing him two room keys, "Take your pick! One is 562 the other is 519. We couldn't get them any closer since the adjoining room we originally had caught on fire last week and is unusable."
Amelia Kholay, a tall slender woman the age of twenty-two, was the younger sister of Nathanial by two years. She had a beautiful, doll-like face with her jade green eyes and soft, golden shoulder length curls that bounced as she walked. Anyone who laid eyes upon her would never believe she was studying to be a lawyer; she didn't fit the type - old, stuffy, pompous, arrogant, and over all unpleasant; in fact, she was quite the opposite in all respects, which was why Jack fell in love with her.
"You would think people would know not to smoke and drink at the same time," Jack said with a roll of his eyes as he wrapped his arms around Amelia's waist from behind and placed a quick kiss upon the back of her head, resting his chin in her her soft, golden curls.
Jack Forrester, a tall man of twenty-seven, had sapphire eyes, dark brown hair cut short, and had a semi-muscular build. Like Nathanial, Jack was a teacher at a high school back in his hometown. As it was, it was Jack who got Nathanial the job when their English teacher quit to take a teaching position some three-hundred miles away in order to have a baby and raise a family with her husband closer to where her parents lived.
Nathanial chuckled, "Jack, not everyone can control what they do when they're drunk, I'm afraid. You choose whichever room you wish, I'll take the other."
"Really? Thanks Nate! You're the best," Amelia said happily as she took the room 519, which was close to the elevator and snack machines, giving Nathanial 562 all to himself.
"The bellhop has our things, I'll tell him where to send each cart; you two go have some fun, alright? I'll catch up with you two love-birds for dinner tonight," Nathanial promised with a smile.
"Writing again?" teased Amelia as she gently punched the front of Nathanial's shoulder.
"That, and lesson plans. Don't want your older brother to make a fool of himself on the first day by not being prepared, do you?" Nathanial retorted with a laugh.
"Maybe," Amelia teased with a wink as she stuck out her tongue, "Bye Nate, try and have some fun on this trip, alright?" Amelia added with a warm smile before linking her fingers through Jack's and leading him towards the restaurant to have a nice lunch before going upstairs to unpack and then hit the slopes.
Nathanial chuckled as he told the bellhop which bags went to which room and waited for an elevator to take them to the fifth floor.

Adeline let out a small yawn as the bell hop took her bags, filled with classic yet elegant pieces of her wardrobe. For one so smart and focused on her future as a doctor, Adeline spent more time then most of the girls in her school. She had small pearl necklaces and refined black dresses, mostly for her parents' events. She wondered for a moment if her parents' lifestyle and need for a perfect daughter had shaped her clean and elegant wardrobe but quickly blew the thought from her mind like a piece of lint on the shoulder of her black scoop neck shirt.
The elevator let out a buzzing noise and Adeline gripped her room key harder, 561. Adeline scolded herself for her thoughts of that was the exact amount of words her college essay was. If you could be even nerdier you'd be kicked out of the hotel... She chided herself. She sighed, feeling slightly isolated. She missed her best friend with the only personality in the world that could shine through her multi colored patterns and obnoxiously chunky jewelry.
Focus on the present. Its time to relax... Adeline reminded herself as she stepped onto the elevator, followed obediently by her bell hop. At least I'll have my room to myself... She decided with a grin. The last thing she wanted around when she was focusing on the English paper she needed to finish was her parents.

When the elevator finally came, Nathanial and the bellhop, along with the carts of bags, entered it and made their way to the fifth floor. Leading the bellhop to Amelia and Jack's room, Nathanial opened the door with the spare key Amelia had given him so that the bellhop could wheel the cart inside and stack the bags in the corner.
When he was through, Nathanial locked the door and headed to his own room. Once his luggage was stacked in the corner, Nathanial payed the bellhop a twenty dollar tip before laying in the bed with his laptop and turning some classical music on. Beginning to work on his novel, Nathanial didn't notice his music becoming a bit loud due to having tuned it out once he was on a roll with his writing.

Adeline sighed as she slid into her room, stacking her bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and lotions in her bathroom in a straight line based on the order she used them. She hurried about the room, tuning out the classical music that was playing in the next door room, as she stacked and hung her clothes in the closet in a color coded order until she was satisfied with the order. With the simple addition of her belongings, the hotel room had gone from an overused apartment to a temporary home.
Adeline took out her book, I Am the Messanger, and began to read for her English paper. She became acutely aware of the music in the next room as it grew into an annoyance. She was a classical music lover, something that fitted her personality easily, but she wanted quiet when she was reading. Flipping her long black hair over her shoulder, Adeline stood from the bed and striaghtened out her emerald knee-length skirt and black scoop neck. Adeline stormed out of her room in a small fury, the subtle gold necklace around her neck swinging violently as she made her way to 562, not noticing the book still in her hand.
Adeline knocked on the door, trying to keep her temper under control as she tapped her black ballet flat on the carpeted floor of the hallway. Her anger raged inside of her, something that rarely ever happened except of course when she just endured a long flight with her parents. Her mother had been trying to nap on the plane while her father argued angrily into his phone at one of his many assistants. Apparently good help was hard to find. Adeline had suffered under the humiliating glares of the fellow first class passengers who had looked upon her parents like classless idiots as her mother argued with her father about her interrupted sleep. The only thing Adeline wanted at the moment was a moment of peace and it was becoming clear that her neighbor wasn't going to give her that.

After about the fourth knock, Nathanial finally heard it and realized how loud his music was. Sighing, Nathanial turned it down a few notches so that it simply hummed in the background before setting his laptop to the side and standing from the bed. Running his fingers through his golden blonde hair, the color that always painted the siblings as twins whenever seen together, Nathanial smoothed out his button up shirt so it wasn't quite a wrinkled mess as he walked to the door.
Opening it, he couldn't help but smile at the young woman before him as he took in her appearance with his sapphire blue eyes; noticing the sassy look in her lips, the annoyance in her scowl, the irritated tapping of the foot - she looked beautiful, even in a temper and despite how young she looked.
"You're here about the music, right? Look, I'm really sorry. I turned it on to try and channel my thoughts for the book I'm writing; I tend to start tuning it out when I write. I'm afraid I didn't realize how loud it was; I'll try to keep it down in the future, I promise. My deepest apologies for disturbing your reading," Nathanial said warmly as he noticed the book in her hands, "I Am the Messenger, hm. I haven't read that one before, is it decent?"

Adeline felt her anger seep away, taking her adrenalina and confidence with it. She had confrontations and here she was on her first day of her break thinking she was going to pick a fight with a boy who was clearly much older then her. "Yes." Adeline said, her green eyes shimmering with nerves, along with a few gold specks. "Its by Markus Zusak." She explained, chiding herself silently. As if the man in front of her cared in the least, not that he couldn't have simply read the author's name yet she rambled on uselessly. "Its about a taxi driver who becomes a do-gooder through mysteriously random cards." She said as a small blush crawled onto her cheeks.
"Anyways, I'd appreciate it if you kept the music down." She was speaking faster now. "I'm a fan of classical music as well but its hard to focus on my book with it blaring." She said with a small grin before turning on her heels and disappearing into her room. She'd just made a fool of herself in front of someone she was living next door to. And a very handsome one at that... She decided with a flick of her black hair, chiding herself for wanting someone who was clearly older then her own nineteen years.

Nathanial chuckled at her shyness as he shut the door and returned to his laptop. 'Guess it wasn't so bad taking this room from Amelia. Seems I have a pretty young woman staying next door. It's a shame she's so young.. it would have been nice to get to know her.' thought Nathanial as he returned to his novel, his thoughts roaming occasionally to the girl next door - a girl who intrigued him to say the least.
~*~
Putting away his laptop, Nathanial stretched before slipping from the bed, his stomach growling and demanding to be fed. Slipping on his shoes, Nathanial headed out of his room, room key shoved in his pocket, and headed to the elevator; pressing the "Down" arrow as he stood waiting for the elevator, wondering if Amelia and Jack were back from the slopes yet.

Adeline sighed after the resounding click of the phone being settled back onto its reciever. Her parents wanted her to join them at dinner. Translation: Her parents wanted their client to see how perfect and sophisticated their daughter was.
Adeline dressed simply in a black wrap dress that hugged her curves expertly. She unclipped the gold chain from around her neck and replaced it with a strand of pearls before putting on black peep toe heels that made her feel far too old. She fixed her hair quickly before completely the look with mascara and a light red lipstick.
Now dressed appropiate for her parents' meeting, Adeline made her way out of her room with her black clutched tucked under her arm. She saw the form of her next door neighbor standing as he waited for the elevator and felt her stomach turn from embaressment. Adeline shook out her black hair which was held half up in a pearl clip and stood beside the man, not daring enough to speak though she snuck a few glances his way.

Noticing the young woman beside him, Nathanial smiled as he looked at her, "You look nice, much better than in a tizzy I might add. I'm sure if you smiled, you'd look even more beautiful as it would accent that blush upon your cheeks," he added teasingly.
'Why am I teasing her as I tease Amelia? Surely that is improper for a stranger to do.. The least you can do is introduce yourself you big lout.'
Blushing, Nathanial held out his hand to her, "My name is Nathanial Kholay, 562; yourself?"

Adeline couldn't help but smile at the man's remark, her face turning a bright red but she forced herself to keep her cool. "I'm Adeline Muir." She said before her smile turned somewhat coy. "561." She said, shaking his hand briefly before letting her arm fall to her side again, suddenly glad for the ding over the elevator. Was she supposed to be having butterflies from a man who was clearly old then her?
Adeline stepped into the elevator and hit the button for the lobby before sticking her hand in front of the doorway yet her hand never touched the side of the elevator. Germs. Ew. "Coming?" She asked Nathanial as she waited him to board the elevator as well.

"Business actually." Adeline laughed, unsure if his comment was some kind of pick-up line. If it was then she'd heard it all before. But she chose instead to appease him rather then blow him off. It was her winter break after all and he was very handsome. "There's no boyfriend to speak of." She hinted before changing the subject so that her last sentence didn't make her sound desperate. "And you? Business or pleasure?" She asked.

"Pleasure," Nathanial said with a smile as the elevator passed the third floor, "My sister and her fiancee dragged me out here on holiday before I start teaching at the High School he works at; new English teacher. So, while they're off skiing, I'm planning my lessons and working on the novel I'm writing. May I ask what kind of business you do?" asked Nathanial, unaware that she thought his innocent conversation starter was a pick-up line.

"My parents'." Adeline explained, looking up at Nathanial though a curl of her black hair, a last minute decision. She didn't want to let her hair lay flat against her back, something her mother had always chided her for. In private of course, she wouldn't want to jepordize their business by arguing with her daughter.
"I'm in college." Adeline said, the lie rolling smoothly off of her tongue as he face stayed composed despite her shock at her own lie. Why did it matter that the man think she was older then she actually was? She asked herself though she already knew the answer. If in someway he was interested then she wasn't going to shy away. "My parents are meeting soem clients here and they flew me out to show off their 'perfect' daughter." She said, making air quotes for emphasis. "What's your novel about?" She asked curiously as the lights of the elevator ticked by, threatening to end their conversation at any moment.

Nathanial chuckled as he said softly, "That type, huh. I know how you feel. My grandparents are the same way and use my sister as a tool to further their contacts as well. Don't worry, once you get a boyfriend or a fiancee, they'll cool off and let you start to slip away; at least, my grandparents did anyway. Can only hope for the best right?"
As the elevator lit up the lobby and opened, Nathanial gave Adeline a small bow as he motioned for her to leave the elevator first, "It seems our discussion has come to an end. Perhaps I will tell you of my novel another time, Miss Muir," Nathanial said with a warm smile before following her off the elevator.

"Perhaps." Adeline smiled as she walked away towards the obnoxiously expensive dining room that branched off from the lobby. She wasn't sure Nathanial had been able to hear her but she couldn't have cared less as the click of her heels against the tile lobby floor filled her with confidence.
"Adeline." Her mother crooned happily as she placed her arms around her daughter in a hug that was as fake as Adeline's 'Gucci' shoes. "Mrs. Cox, this is my daughter Adeline." Adeline's mother smiled widely at her client before gesturing for Adeline to sit beside.
"Its a pleasure." Adeline smiled warmly, the script rolling off her tongue as if she actually meant the words.
"Mine as well." The Mrs. Cox woman said, nodding to Adeline with a smile that showed how impressed she was by the young girl's formalness. Adeline's parents noticed it was well and lit up like children coming downstairs on Christmas morning.
Adeline sipped her water casually as her parents and their client talked endlessly about crunching numbers and finances. She pretended to look interested for both parties' sakes but she gazed over the menu and secretly craved for a carb-fest but knew how inapporpiate it would be. She thought dreamily of her favorite fast food chain at home and wondered if they had one near the swanky lodge. She could defiently go for some fries and a burger and maybe with a milk-
"Adeline?" Her mother asked, her eyes shooting daggers at her daughter. "Aren't you going to answer Mrs. Cox?" Her words more forceful. "Are you dazing off about your future again?" She said though a forced laugh and Adeline immediately picked up on the hint.
"I'm afraid so." Adeline laughed, the words sounding effortless as she looked over at the expectant looking client. "I'm studying to be a doctor. I want to work in the delivery room." Adeline explained, glad when Mrs. Cox turned back to her parents to discuss what Adeline had just told her. Turning back to the menu, Adeline decided on the cobb salad with a disappointed sigh. She really wanted some fries.

Seeing neither Jack nor Amelia, Nathanial decided to go back upstairs and order in Chinese. Shaking his head at the wasted trip down, Nathanial headed back to the elevator and went back up to his room on the fifth floor. Well, maybe it wasn't such a wasted trip after all; he did meet that lovely young woman, Adeline Muir. That in itself was worth the trip down. Tossing the key on the nightstand, Nathanial picked up the phone and ordered in Chinese from a restaurant not too far from the hotel.
While he awaited the food, Nathanial turned his laptop back on and began working on his lesson plans for the coming term of school. It would be tough trying to assimilate so late in the year; but Nathanial wasn't too afraid of it. If anything, he liked the challenge. His only fear was not being respected as a teacher by the staff, being as new as he was to actually teaching in a school and not just in a setting put on by the college.

Adeline shook out her hair once she was back on the elevator, glad that the dinner was finally over. The salad had left her hungry and she was glad her parents had thought to bring her car to the resort so that she could have some freedom. She hadn't bothered to ask the receptionist about where the nearest burger joint was, knowing the look she'd be given. Instead, Adeline decided to just drive for a while then ask directions from someone who didn't think so highly of themselves when they were stuck behind a desk answering phones.
Adeline stepped onto the elevator, making her way up to the fifth floor and hurrying to her room, her stomach growling with hunger. Adeline changed into a simple dark wash jeans, black converse, and a quick college sweatshirt, her hair pulled into a quick ponytail. She would never have gone to school looking so messy, in her opinion anyways, but she was hungry and clothes came second to food, a rule that Adeline lived by.
Adeline grabbed her keys and her wallet before making her way out the door and waiting impatiently for the elevator to reach the fifth floor, her foot tapping.

When the elevator reached the fifth floor, he nodded to the lady waiting at the elevator before carrying his boxes, which had large Chinese script written upon it, towards room 562.
After knocking, shuffling could be heard inside the door and soon enough, the door was opened; the food exchanged for money. Going back to the elevator the man smiled at his twenty dollar tip.
-
Nathanial grinned as he set the boxes upon the table and began opening them up; the scents of the egg rolls, the sweet and sour chicken, the brown rice, the sesame chicken prepared just the way he liked; it was heaven rising up from the boxes. Setting the food on the table, Nathanial went about preparing a plate for himself before taking out a pair of chopsticks, bringing his laptop to the table, and beginning to eat as he finished up his lessons plans for the year.

Adeline sighed with relief as the elevator doors opened and a Chinese delivery man stepped out. Hurrying into the elevator, Adeline made her way to the lobby and had the valet find her car.
Settled in her jet-black impala, Adeline drove for a few minutes before finding her favorite chain burger shop and forced herself not to dance around happily at her luck. Adeline entered the familiar building and breathed in the sweet scent of the grease. Grinning to herself, she made her way to the counter and bought a large burger with a side of fries and a chocolate milkshake.
Adeline giggled happily as she made her way back to the lodge, the greasy meal beside her on the passenger's seat. Making her way back through the lobby, Adeline ignored the glares and disapproving looks as she made her way back to her room to enjoy her favorite meal.

Stretching, the nightstand littered with empty plates, used chopsticks, and empty soda cans; Nathanial put down his laptop, finally finished with lesson plans. Now he could devote the rest of his vacation to his novel.
Picking up the trash around the bed from his dinner, Nathanial tossed it all into a garbage can and went to the bathroom to to take a shower before turning into bed for tomorrow would be a long day of being forced to skii with Jack and Amelia before he could relax that evening and write in the comfort of the lobby; where he could sit, relax, and not disturb his neighbors.

Adeline smiled happily as she threw away the wrappers of her fast food binge. She rubbed her stomach, pleased with herself, before changing into slim black jeans and a white blouse, a gift from her best friend.
As if being summoned by the thought, Adeline heard her Blackberry beep with a text from her best friend. She scanned the quick text asking whether or not she'd met any noteworthy boys. It surprised Adeline that she thought of the boy next door and immediately texted a No in reply.
Grabbing her book, Adeline tucked it under her arm and headed towards the lobby, figuring that she wouldn't be interrupted by her neighbors if she was in the lobby. Adeline spread against a leather seat in the lobby and opened her book as she tuned out the buzz of the lobby around her and focused on her favorite German author.
***
Adeline yawned as she looked around the nearly empty lobby, only a few men hanging around the bar. Standing from the couch, Adeline stretched her now sore muscles before going to the elevator. Adeline saw a strange man in the elevator and carefully stood to the opposite side as she waited for the elevator to bring her to her floor.
Adeline stepped out of the elevator and made her way towards her room, aware of the man following her shadily. "Hey, pretty girl." He called out, his words slurred by alcohol. "Don't leave so soon. My room is just down the hall." He grinned, grabbing Adeline's bottom, causing her to spin on her heel and slap him promptly across the face. "There's no need for that." He said harshly.
"Stay away from me." Adeline called angrily, fear rising in her throat as the man held her against the wall roughly. "Help!" She yelled as she kicked her legs at the man, praying for someone to find her before their fight went any farther.

Hearing a ruckus in the hallway, Nathanial rubbed his eyes as he got out of bed and stumbled to the door with the intention of yelling at those causing it. However, upon opening the door to the scene down the hall, Nathanial's eyes grew wide as he saw a drunken man pressing his young neighbor up against the wall, his hands roaming all over her buttocks and back though she fought to push him away.
Rushing over to them, not caring that he was dressed only in his boxers, Nathanial pulled the drunk off of Adeline and punched him in the eye, "Get the fuck away from her you bloody drunk! What the hell makes you think you can touch a girl like that?" Nathanial demanded with another punch. Shoving the guy up against the wall, Nathanial shouted a few other obscenities and threats at him before shoving him down the hall, promising that if he ever touched the young girl again he would get worse than a few punches.
Walking over to Adeline, Nathanial brushed the hair from her face and inquired softly, "Are you alright? Did he hurt you? He didn't get physical, did he?"
