Lowthorn Asylum for the Mentally Unstable

This rundown insane asylum has been closed down and hidden for many years. Now rumors all over run about said asylum to be haunted and fame seekers from the internet have their eye on said place. One vlogger in particular wanders down for a chance at fame, is it really just an old run down asylum like the books say?

The evening air is clean and chill. Thick coniferous tree sway serenely, while their deciduous cousins reach their bare limbs out toward the towering building resting solidly in the center of the clearing (the only one within a mile in any direction) like clawed and desperate hands. The building was uninhabited, with only two small windows breaking the solid ivy covered brick of his front side. It's windows watched, unblinking, over it's small kingdom of empty, weed broken, parking spaces and rustling golden leaves.

Inside was not nearly so peaceful. Though still, the overturned chairs and beds, disintegrating mortar, and crumbling, graffiti covered walls spoke of a more violent decay.

In spite of the fact that the asylum had been closed since the late 1920's it still received the occasional visitor. A curious teen, or fame seeking film student. The rare, but none the less welcomed middle aged couple looking to put a bit of spice back into their marriage. There were beds enough for all, and the doors never locked from the outside.

The crunch of dead leaves was soft under foot as timid footsteps made their way over to a building at a clearing ahead. It was gray outside, maybe a high chance of rain, but the owner of the footsteps didn't care for that. Zoom out. Long brown-dyed hair cut neatly into straight bangs that frames (though the blonde was starting to show through the roots), a heart-shaped head. Morelle "Momo" Perkawitz set out to a certain building, Lowthorn Asylum was its name. Bright, ice blue eyes looked up. Face to face with a large run down building, the girl, no older than 17 trembled slightly at the sight. The poor girl was only equiped with a backpack with a camera for vlogging, her cellphone, snacks, flashlights and lots of extra batteries, and in her hand was a long metal bat for protection. If she had more time to think this decision over, she would've turned around and ran back home, never to step foot back on to the clearing ever again. Before the blond-brunette could do so however, thunder rumbled over head, and rain started to pour down, hard. Squealing in fright, Momo ducked her head under her hands. The girl was dressed well, a semi thick coat tee-shirt underneath, long jegging tights, and thick dark sneakers made for running. Poor girl was a tad bit paranoid, but she had every right to be. Without a second thought she got her stuff together and ran inside, throwing the door open with a loud slam and squeak and closing it with the same speed and sound behind her.

After she got a bearing of her surroundings, she gasped. She had made it inside and night was falling. There was a guarantee that turning back now was impossible. She gulped, and fiddled the doorknob behind her, relieved to see it was still unlocked as always. Regaining her confidence back, the girl looked down the large disintegrating hallway and started her trek inside. Once she was in the middle of the hallway, she got her camera and her flashlight out, flipped the camera on, and started filming.

"Hey you guys! I'm currently live in the Lowthorn Asylum as you guys requested. Now, I'll be here filming and keeping you on tabs on as much of my stay here as possible! I will prove that there is absolutely nothing inside this rundown place! Nothing at all!" Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed, and shadows danced on the wall behind her, as if mocking her as she let out a yelp in fright at the sudden noise,"N-nothing, just the trick of nature!"

With a firm, but quiet snick of finality, the doors of the main entrance lock. The echo of the tumbling gears ghosts through the asylum's corridors with a gasp. The buzz of faint electricity dancing through old, corroded wiring answers, pulsing in reverse toward the sealed doors. Another blast of thunder rumbles and shakes the double pained glass of the building's barred windows (more numerous along the back of the asylum).

Lowthorn -the building stirs: a chair slips and falls from it's precarious position, wedged under the doorknob of an observation room door. Papers, burned and abandoned, in a yet undiscovered physician's office flutter in the still air. Anticipation hangs heavy in the halls like smoke billowing down in lazy swirls from the ceiling.

Three floors up footsteps echo hollowly in the cavern-like rooms once used dining, and recreation. Lowthorn -the man treads the familiar paths of his nightly patrol only vaguely aware that something has disturbed the building's impatient slumber.

Momo turned around, the female could've sworn she heard a click, but she couldn't be sure. She set the camera down on an over turned bed and as soon as it was stable enough on its own, she made a mad dash for the front entrance. Jiggling the doorknob desperately, her heart rate quickened as she found it locked. Now fear started to settle into the depths of her stomach as she staggered backwards and fell over. Her eyes were wide, fear-ridden, and flickering back and forth before she scrambled up and ran back to her camera. Before she could get there however there seemed to be a large gust of wind flew past and the camera fell to the floor. Falling to the floor, Momo picked up the camera carefully, and inspected it. There was no huge major damage to the camera, but Momo knew the same wasn't for her. The poor girl was already traumatized from just being in a few minutes. She looked around at her surroundings. The shadows seemed more alive, the rumble of thunder sounded more like mocking laughs of the past patients of the building. Off to the side, she could hear water dripping, whether it be from the leaking ceiling or an old sink, it was loud, and it scared Momo right to the core. She half screamed and grabbed her things, not looking back as she dashed down the other end of the hallway to find the back entrance, only to find it boarded up.

She was sweating and close to hallucinating now. So the brunette stopped running and leaned her body against a moldy wall, trying to catch her breath and regain her logical brain. If I remember correctly, there are fire escapes on the roof! If I can get up there, maybe I can climb down to safety! Excited by this knowledge/confidence, she quickly re-approached the stairs to the second floor she had ran past in her panicked state and quickly started to climb, the pouring rain drowning out the footsteps from the third floor, which left the girl defenseless, save for her bat,

It would have been very hard to miss the commotion made by the asylum's latest visitor. With a grim expression Lowthorn made his way to the stairs; he was half sick of people breaking in. Vandals and pranksters defiling the building, it's history. Whatever the prankster wanted on the roof they wouldn't find it, the door didn't open any more.

He found her near the top. She was exactly as he'd expected her to be; young, poorly dressed (as the young are wont to be these days), camera in hand. He would have to help her of course.

"You won't get out that way, my dear." he's stood a few steps behind her, hand on the banister. He was a man of indeterminate age, his handsome face unreadable as he observed the panicked teen.

"I might suggest the front door." in his hand Lowthorn holds a great ring of keys, and he lifts it up for the girl to see. "It locks from the inside, luckily I have the key."

Momo was terrified as she saw a figure approach her. She froze on the spot at the top of the third floor and refused to move. This was the end, she knew it. How stupid of her to be so curious of an asylum building. Sure, it had its historic charm and from her research and preparation, it was best seen in the light of day. But no, her idiot friends talked her into wandering in it at night for her vlog, saying it could be useful for a project later on. She jumped at the voice. It was deep, a man's, and he didn't seem too happy.

Quickly flipping off the camera and timidly looking up at the man, she bowed,"I'm so sorry sir I didn't mean to barge in I wasn't going to actually go through with going in here but it started to rain! Please let me stay until the rain stops I might get lost out there!" The brunette was terrified, and now she was caught, but could she really trust this man? In a rundown building known for its not so friendly background, it rang alarm bells in her mind. Nevertheless, he had keys, and once the rain let up, or morning at least came, she was out of here.

Was she really still asking to stay, as terrified as she was? Around them the building groaned, thunder crashed, though muffled through the walls. The storm was directly a top them now, and the metal banister vibrated under Lowthorn's hand with force of it. He unhooks a flashlight from his belt, and flicks it on so that they can see better.

"That would be unwise."

He turns from her, and starts to make his way down again. "The nurses station on the first floor has a working phone. I'll summon you a cab." At the top of the stairs the door to the roof, though sealed shut, rattles under the force of the wind and rain.

Momo flinched at the sudden light, and shivered as the building groaned around them. Of course it would be unwise! She thought bitterly,I was the stupid one coming in here in the first place! She nodded vigorously at his suggestion and turned around and followed him down the stairs fiddling with her own flashlight, turning it on quickly, she waved it around curiously, looking around at the rundown asylum she had accidentally wandered into. "Wow, when you take a real good look at this place, there's a ton of back story to this, I wonder how the patients lived, the books say it was pretty bad..." She said out loud, before she realized the man was still in front of her and covered her mouth in embarrassment, looking back down at his feet shyly.

"It was completely inhumane." Lowthron's voice was casual as he talks, not look behind him at the girl.

"The insane were kept in tiny locked cells let out only for treatment. Those who were not cured with electro-shock therapy were lobotomized. During the typhus epidemic of the mid 1900's an overflow of patients suffering the fever were removed to here, and kept in the wing directly opposite the insane. Occasionally they were mistaken for each other."

For a moment they walk in silence, the only sounds are the eager creaking of the asylum's walls, they're footsteps in the dark halls.

"People build these places with such noble intentions. Though misguided..." Lowthorn's voice is low rumble; musing to himself more than anything.

The nurse's station looms up before them, down on the first floor. The room wide and tall, a dark cavern. The shadows making the worn wood of the station's counter seem larger, more imposing. Lowthorn strides into the shadows confidently, reaching for the phone. There is no dial tone. He hangs it up, and lift the receiver to his ear once more.

"No tone... The storm has likely effected the service."

((Sharing this YouTube link because I imagine Lowthorn talking with Mads' Danish accent. I love it... >.< It's a scene from ep 1 of Hannibal, but with minimal spoilers. ))

Momo blinked, she had not expected an answer, from him nonetheless. Still, despite his stoic facade, he seemed rather informative about the place. This information sparked curiosity in her however, and she wanted more information. Controversies and old asylums have always been somewhat of an interest, but the typhus part to the story of Lowthorn was new. People put in to the same place as the diseased? Not only that, they were mistaken for one another?! She cross out vlogging, but the camera may be useful for some footage, and she decided to write an article instead, after she got more information and got out of this building. She went stiff as the phones dead tone sounded, No tone....how am I supposed to get myself home now? She faced her flashlight on him nervously,"So what do you suggest we do now sir? If you have an umbrella I could just walk home maybe. Ah, but I'd like to know more about this place! An article of Lowthorn sounds much better than a cheap viral video to get to fame, plus, the typhus part got me curious." Her eyes were bright, with slight fear, but with sparked curiosity.

(Whoa that voice. That's really cool, now where can I go to watch episodes of Hannibal...)

"Curious? That's what history books are for. Come." with a small motion Lowthorn directs her toward the door.

"I'm afraid you're going to get wet." he put out the flashlight, and hooks it back on his belt, take out the ring of keys. At the main entrance he pauses, expression unreadable. The lock and door knob are not there. Not smashed or taken, but simply not there, the wood and metal of the door smooth and unbroken, as if it were always like that.

"Curious..."

(Argh, small post. Sorry... I watch Hannibal HERE, there are a lot of popups though since it's a sneaky site. If you can choose putlocker or sockshare, filenuke sounds scary but is the second best player.)

(Once I get it working I shall start watching!)

Momo mentally slapped herself, but then again, it was none of her business to ask such a question. The brunette shook her head, and clapped her hands together, she'll definitely get information out of this man, no matter what happens. She snapped back to reality with that thought, but he was nowhere to be seen. Turning around frantically, she saw alight disappear from the room and out to the hallway. Scrambling to get her things together she took her flashlight and her bat and ran after him, only catching up to hear the last word come out of his lips. Looking at the back of his head curiously,"Hmm? What's so curious sir?" She looked over his shoulder, trying to see what stopped him from opening the door, but it was pretty dark still and she couldn't see the doorknob at all. "I don't see anything sir what's wrong?"

"It would seem you have been checked in." he steps back to allow the girl to see the missing doorknob. For a moment a lightning blast outside lights up the large room, lengthening the shadows. Lowthorn expect the darkest corners, letting the girl realize the gravity of the situation. If he sees what he's looking for he doesn't say.

"If you have a cell phone, now might be the time to call for help. At this point, however, I doubt it will do much good."

Momo looked at the door,"N-no way!" She ran in front and felt around the door,"Is this some kind of joke?! What do you mean checked in?!" She said, panicking the door knob was gone! Like it had never existed in such a place to begin with. The dread and guilt of the situation sank in. She was stuck in here, with a stranger no less. An air of despair washed over her as her sanity drained down. The brunette stood quietly, before she turned around and lifted up the bat in her hands dangerously. With a sudden movement she swung the bat and tried to break down the door, to no avail, only suceeding in making the noise resound through the building, almost like an eerie laughter. After two or three hits she stopped, trying to get a grasp of reality as she calmed her high heart rate and breathing."What is going on? You seem aware of this situation, now explain to me what the hell is going on!" She was a dead girl, she already knew, a dead girl walking now.

"This building was made to have people in it." Lowthorn explains, looking off into the darkness. The girl's outburst is understandable, but fruitless. He clips the keys on his belt, next to the flashlight, no longer needing either.

"The is an old wife's tale about this place; that sometimes the asylum will trap people in it. Given the circumstances it may be true after all." the man starts to walk away, giving no indication of whether the girl should follow. He hasn't completed his routine, there are many rooms still left to check.

Momo turned around quietly, none of this seemed to make any logical sense. Then again, she was in an asylum in the damn middle of the night with a man who seemed unmoved by his surroundings. She turned around to see him walking down the hallway, and quickly picked up her dropped flashlight and scurried along after him. The girl realized that she did not even have the man's name. Looking at the man quizically, she lowered her voice to somewhat less than shouting,"Who are you really?" Glaring at the back of his head, she couldn't help but curse her stupidity.

"My name is Charles Lowthorn." he doesn't turn back around, but allows the girl to follow. It is, perhaps, a mistake, but who's remains to be seen.

"I am the grounds keeper of this asylum." Above them, on the next floor, a door slams and force of it shudders the floor. Lowthorn slows for a moment, his attention caught. When nothing else happens he continues on.

It's... hard. To think, to move. She's so tired. But, there's something... important. She has to get out! She has to...

Up ahead there's a light; warm and soft. She's been lost in the darkness for so long, she follows it like moth to the flame. As she draws near the light takes shape, then two. Another girl, young and different from herself. And him. That was bad. She draws closer to the girl, reaching out to her, casting no shadow in flashlight's glow.

"No..."

Momo bit her lip, Lowthorn? That was the name of the asylum they were walking in. This place wouldn't really need a grounds keeper if it were abandoned. Strange, Momo was sure this place would have no people inside. But low and behold, Charles was here. She exhaled slowly, a lot of things in this place didn't make sense to her, the brunette made a mental note that Charles wasn't too trustworthy, the circumstances surrounding them being too suspicious for her to swallow. As she continued on behind him, she jumped at the noise upstairs, and saw Charles stop,so she followed, but as he started to walk again Momo felt a cold draft pass her and the faint image of a hand pass. At first she thought it was her going insane, but then, soft yet loud enough for her ears, she heard a feminine voice whisper,"No..." And she jumped back and screamed, covering her ear, eyes searching for the source.

"Are you quite alright miss?" Lowthorn looks back at the frightened girl with an amused expression. Why would such an easily startled girl come to an abandoned asylum in the middle of the night. It was the folly of youth, he supposes, after all this girl isn't the first to wander into the asylum, and there was no doubt she wouldn't be the last.

"I believe you now have me at a disadvantage: I have yet to learn your name."

It's so hard... she's so tired...

She tries to speak again -run away, run...- but she can't. There is no energy left inside of her. Is it the light flickering or her? His voice is muffled. Don't trust him...

Momo glared at the man who seemed amused by her fear. That old shit. She thought bitterly, trying to stab his skull with her icy blue eyes. "Well I was fine. But then I felt a draft and then I heard someone speak." She knew what she heard wasn't a hallucination at most, at the moment she felt very stable so the trick of the mind was out of the picture. Rubbing jer ear in annoyance the brunette shook her head, trying to rid herself of the eerie feeling. At the sound of his voice again, she snapped back to attention. Her name? Being called her nickname by a strange man like him made her feel uncomfortable, Momo decided just to stick with her real name for this man,"Perkawitz, Morelle Perkawitz." She said, nothing too wrong with the last name basis, he had shared his after all, was her logical explanation,"Pleased to finally get to a stone basis of small aquaintance Mr. Charles." She added, smiling softly before looking around with her flashlight again.

"We've known each other no more than twenty minutes, I expect acquaintanceship is as much as any two people can accomplish in that time, Miss Perkawitz."

On the second floor windows lined the hall way on one wall, though very little could be seen through the inky blackness of night. The storm has already past, the thunder barely more than a faint rumble, the lightning barely visible through the dense silhouette of the trees. It was still a long time until morning.

"Tell me Miss Perkawitz: why are you really here? It can't be for the sake of history. If you live close enough to walk, you must know enough about this place to know to seek answers from the local library."

Momo sighed and scratched her head,"I was intending on vlogging this building, cause there's a ton of ridiculous rumors about ghosts or serial killers or stuff of the like surrounding this place. And my friends have all gotten into that, making up childish stories to scare the kids, I'm sure a couple have been here spray painting the place, they're very rowdy, you can see," She gestured to the graffiti littered on one of the walls, ranging from profanity to scary messages and lovers initials. She took out her camera,"The reason I'm here is to clear that nonsense up and at least stop with the defiling of this place by my friends in showing them footage of nothing happening to me as I stay here. I wasn't really meant to be long, but the rain and all and the missing knob..." She turned on the camera again,"With all due respect this place does have its creepy charm, I can see why they do these things at times, weird minds of us teens with our invincibility, am I right?"

"I'll grant it. Though I doubt teenagers will stop breaking in here, should the rumors be proven false."

Opposite the windows are rooms, just as dark inside as the sky outside. Lowthorn peers through the small peephole windows every now and then, seems to approve of what he sees and moves on.

"Sometimes people just want to be scared, irregardless of the truth."

Momo nodded in agreement,"That may be true, but it'll stop my friends at least and thats good enough for me." Moving the camera from Charles to the rest of the building, she looked in awe the over turned beds, the peeling walls, to each their own story. She shivered as she saw scratch marks on the inside of one room. After a while of trailing behind Charles,"So Mr. Charles, why do you go around at this time at night?" She faced the camera to him again, the lights putting strange shadows on her face.
