Cold. Windy. She looked out the window and sighed. She was turning 21 today, Xyphila culture dictated that on this day, she would become a woman. Opening her wardrobe, she stared at the assortment of colourful clothes that rested there. She pulled out piles of clothing, chucking them behind her, until she unearthed a latched wooden chest - a steal at the local thrift store! Opening it, she grinned happily. Hand-picked for just this occasion using pocket money she had saved from since she was 12, was the perfect outfit, in her favourite colours. The pink, purple, red and white make her drool a little, as she lusted over the colours. She wanted to wear it. Now. Scrambling, she adjusted her black frames and got to work…
There. She grinned at her reflection in the mirror, before putting on the finishing touches - the red heart earrings her grandma had gotten her. Now she looked perfect! Walking out of her room and down the flights of stairs, she entered the living room. It was still dark.
Had they forgotten all about her special day?… Sullenly, she sat down on the large, velvet sofa.
"Surprise!" Her heart leapt out of her chest as she jumped in fright. Face flushed, heart pumping, adrenaline flooded her veins. Spinning around on the heels of her fox-face slippers, she turned to face - her family! Red confetti fell from the ceilings in a chaotic mess, as her uncle turned on the ceiling fans. Smiling, she welcomed the many warm arms around her, kisses, and heart-warming congratulations given by more people than she could count.
Suddenly… Everyone stood back. Her mother came forward, looking coy… Stroking the strands of hair that framed her face, she leaned forward, narrowly avoiding the brim of her hat.
"There's someone we'd like you to meet, hunny." And it was in that moment, that she saw him. Sleek and beautiful. As she opened her arms to welcome him, the heart-faced fox jumped into her arms, as if he known her his entire life. She grinned. And just could not stop grinning.
