A Freakin' Head
Hey guys. I was in my first hour art class this morning and realized that I had gotten done with my assignment way before anyone else, so I had to do something to fill up the time. I just grabbed a random piece of paper and started doodling. In the end, it looked pretty good. Though, since I never get that kind of stuff, I was terrified of putting in facial features. So I got the bright idea to trace over with pen so if I had to erase, then I wouldn't ruin the outline. Then I thought some more. If I make mistakes, the outline might not go away, but neither with the left erase marks from the mistake. And, I'm sorry, I can't lightly trace before I draw. It never works that was for me. So, I made a copy of the original and started to work on it. It ended up very poorly. So, got any ideas on how to help me out here? Pointers of facial features? I mean, I can pretty much do eyes. But I can't do them evenly. Either one is larger, or slanted, or higher... Noses are just a curse. And mouths aren't mouths. So... Help? I'm not going to post what I did to the copy, but if you think it might help, then go ahead and say so and I'll post it. If you don't have anything to say... Then enjoy the head outline! :) . . . Unless you don't like it. . . . http://i54.tinypic.com/2qdzdrs.png Oh, and the lines aren't nearly as shaky as they look in the picture. I re-sized it and it looks just a bit off. The lines are actually quite smooth. Now I've added the new one with a bit of facial features. Is it better? Or worse? Should I go back to blank? Should I keep it that way? Should I keep going? |
Draw ruler lines. It may sound strange but lightly draw a vertical line down the center of the face, curved slightly to follow the contour of the face (ie; if the head is facing the right draw a slight curve facing the right). About half-way down the head draw a horizontal line (this is for the eyes!!) then a mouth line half way between the eye line and the end of the chin, oh and the nose is somewhere in between those! :P
These will help you place where the facial features belong in relation to the rest of the head. It helps a lot and with practice you can start to understand the proprtions too. Now a critique on your "head". The initial line art to the left is well done for an "anime" style face, the neck flows out of the head (+) but it seems a tad too long (-) if you add some shoulder lines this can easily be fixed! when you move to the second picture you can tell that the ears are a bit too low, they should line up with the eyes. The nose is nice (if a little small) but don't be afraid to carry the nose edge all the way to the eyebrow. The eyes are very close to being symmetrical, so bravo on that, they can be very tricky sometimes. Just add a mouth and a squiggly line in the ear and voila! A put together face! |
