THE CRITIQUES, GIVE THEM TO ME

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...iPirateWIP.png

I know the lines are awful. That's (mostly) me getting used to the tablet program. Sometimes I can make beautiful lines, but this is not one of those pieces. I'll also be changing the left sleeve. Apparently her coat is lopsided and has a fitted sleeve and a bell sleeve. =_=;;

I know I'll need help with the gun, because I've never done one before. Anyone have good references for coloring them?

I was also wondering if anyone had decent tutorials on how to do fabric textures. I'd like the coat to look leathery and worn, maybe suede-ish.

I also have no idea what the collar pattern is. I assumed it was plaid, but I tried a couple of different things and I couldn't get it to look right, so I don't really think it's plaid anymore. Suggestions?

Here's the pose reference. I'm way out of practice on figure drawing, so lately most of my art has been re-fitting poses I find somewhere else. I'm a lazy artist :gonk:

Nice work you've done so far!
I like your own catch of the sleeve difference, I didn't even notice that. XDD

The first things I saw were~
The head seemed a bit small and the bottom of the butt of the gun seemed at a different angle than the gun itself (though that might be due to a lack of color/shading and all that).
Hope you don't mind. ^^; I made the head a bit bigger and put red lines for the gun so you could see what I meant (hopefully). But the head may just be your style and the yeah, the gun could just need some coloring and shading to it to see the angle properly.
(Ignore the jacket.. I was trying to find something leathery.. XD)

The only thing I could think of for the gun is to Google pictures of silver guns. :XD
I wish I had a tutorial to give you for the fabrics too. That will be an interesting look and I can't wait to see how you'll pull it off. :eager:

And the only thing I could think of for the jacket is maybe it was supposed to be kind of striped. It is hard to see. P:

Thanks for the catch on the gun angle, I didn't even notice that! I should be able to fix that pretty easily.

As for the head, I did notice that it looks a bit small. At this point it's not something I can fix with the program I have. I keep wanting to blame it on her hair, since I kept drawing it so close to the skull. Blah. And she has thunder thighs =_=

The program I'm using is called Sketchbook Express. It's really awesome for a free program, but it only supports 3 layers at a time, which is a total pain in the butt. It also lacks select, copy, and paste. It does do some basic transformations (which I mostly use to re-center a piece on the canvas after I've started) and it has 12 different brush types. It also has a symmetry mode, which could be cool if I knew what to do with it xD

The pro version is USD $5. If it had more tools (like SMUDGE, UGH) and supported more than 6 layers (it seems so arbitrary... can't I have at least 16?) I'd consider buying it. Still, it's not bad for a free program running on Honeycomb.

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 02-13-2012 09:09 PM

Awesome~ :D

Ohhh yeah, now that mention it, I think the hair does make it look smaller. P:
Haha thunder thighs. XDD Maybe if you thinned her thigh a bit it would help?

Ooh neat. Not bad for a free program, huh? Symmetry mode I could see myself using to draw eyes and ears. If they were head on.

So, apparently the jacket has the word "plaid" in the item name. I guess that's where I got the idea xD

I'm going to try to work on this again today. I did fix the sleeve and a couple other small things, and next I plan to re-color the goggle rims to be silver, fix the butt of the gun, and trim down those thunder thighs. Then I'll probably play around with skin shading a bit, see if I can get something I like. She just looks so flat right now. I'll also fix her face tattoos, which are also aligned wrong.

When that's done, I guess I'll do the plaid next. It would be much harder to correct that later than other parts (especially since I'm stuck only using three layers =_=) so I guess I'm forced to mess around with it more.

In the mean time, I've been working on chibi heads, because I'm a lazy artist. So far they haven't really come out the way I wanted >3>

Keyori 02-15-2012 11:06 PM

UPDATE-ERIFFIC!

All fixes in place now, except, of course, the plaid, which I'm still messing around with. I think the skin looks a lot better now. I even gave her some lip love! :D

I also tweaked the skull pendant a little bit, to give it a little bit more depth, and soften the shading. That's fancy talk for: I erased the coloring and started over xD But I'm happy with how it came out!

I still think her face needs some work, but I'm really not sure what to do. Something needs fixing but I don't know what. I also need to tweak her ear a little more, but that shouldn't be a huge deal.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ateUpdate1.png

Ack, and apparently my hand slipped at some point; there's a stray paint line near her left elbow and waist. I'll fix that up when I work on the jacket.

My cats want me to stop arting and play with them

I think I found a good style for the jacket. I finally gave in and deleted the sketch layer (which I never showed here) so that I'd have one just for the plaid. It worked out well and I think I found a plaid pattern I'm happy with, even though I did it by hand x_x

I also played around with the solid parts a bit and found a style that I think works well.

And I fixed the ear. The left side (her right) of the jacket is done now. I'll post another WIP when the jacket and shirt are finished.

Working with only 3 layers is challenging. Better than only one I suppose!

HURR IT IS LOOK AT THAT GORGEOUS PLAID (which actually looks better on this laptop than on my tablet... not usually the case)

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...ateUpdate2.png

This is pretty much how I feel right now:
http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/...jpg?1251168454

Now I just need to finish the skirt, gloves, belt (simple enough), boot (a little more challenging), gun (AUUUUGH NO), and find out why the skin still looks weird to me. WHAT IS HER FACE MISSING?!

At least her ear is better =A=

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 02-16-2012 09:34 PM

Daayuuum that is some awesome plaid. Okay, so it was plaid.

Personally, I think the shading on the face is so subtle it makes her face look a bit dirty. She might just need highlights if you're doing that. P:

I thought you were fixing the sleeves? :ninja:

Otherwise, looks awesome! :eager:

Keyori 02-16-2012 09:51 PM

I did fix the sleeve? The one on her left is the one I changed.

QUICK SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...evecompare.png

Is there something else I missed? D:

I guess for her face I'll just look at some tutorials somewhere or something. I can see how her face would look dirty.

All that's left is her boot and gun, other issues notwithstanding.

OOPS. Her glove needs rivets too. Derp.

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 02-16-2012 10:29 PM

Oooh I see. I thought you were going to fix the rolled parts. It does look better!

Yeah. Maybe it's the color. P: I don't think it's too bad though.

... Man, that plaid still looks awesome. xDDD

Keyori 02-16-2012 10:31 PM

Yeah, her left cuff is starting to bother me, so I might straighten it out too xD

Thanks! I've decided not to do any other kind of texture shading to it. Originally I was going to try to make it a more dynamic-looking pattern, following the curve of the material and all, but that was way too much work. Hooray straight line tools! 8D

I'm working on the boot right now. Shouldn't be too difficult, I'll probably spend most of my time on the metal bits. They're pretty detailed in pixel form so I think I have a good idea of how I want it to look.

OH CRAP. I keep forgetting more stuff... I also need to add a flower to the jacket. I guess that means I get to spend time Googling flowers. I've only ever really drawn and colored one, and that piece is... from 2005? Maybe earlier?

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 02-16-2012 10:34 PM

Haha. :XD Well that sleeve does look better since you pointed it out. I had been looking at the cuffs before, why I missed it.

Yeah I think it looks fine like that. Once you're done you should try that just to see how it looks. :ninja: Maybe~

Cuddlymoon 04-10-2012 02:10 AM

its smexxi!

I think everything is practically covered already. I would add a bit more shadow to the knee to make it look more like a knee.

WhiteDarkness 05-04-2012 04:16 AM

Ahahah I totally thought the end of the cape was a tail until I looked closer.
Well done.

Freiheitsflugel 05-09-2012 04:06 AM

*gasp* it's the takochu commander again :o

Keyori 05-09-2012 07:12 PM

Lol! I really should make some more arts. I haven't worked on anything in a while.

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 05-12-2012 02:45 AM

Yeah, what the heck is up with that, man? D:

Keyori 05-12-2012 02:48 AM

I KNOW RIGHT.

I did draw a pretty but I need to get it into some sort of digitized form so I can fix it up some moar. And then post it or somethin'. Maybe this weekend some time? :D

Keyori 05-12-2012 10:35 PM

UGH. THIS IS HOW I FEEL TODAY.

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lr...1f6bo1_500.jpg

I'll try to post real art soon. :gonk:

Sweetsunnyrain 05-13-2012 01:05 AM

XD lol that's how I feel most of the time~

Nice art, by the way! :D

Keyori 05-13-2012 01:12 AM

OH YEAH I was totally working on something earlier and forgot about it. Left the window open and everything. xD

HERE 'TIS.

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...odles/bust.jpg

I'm gonna cut out the bottom figure and just do the top. What you can't see is the mangled limbs called "legs" for the bottom one. It's pretty awful.

Ikuto Akihiko Hasegawa 05-13-2012 02:29 PM

Omg that's totally how I feel. XDD Damn hands!

And oh snap! Looks good, Keyo.
