Perks of being a Ranger

I actually get to art for work.

I'm teaching a basic watercolor class every other Saturday.

And I'm working on illustrations for our annual magazine.

You choose and blend colors incredibly well! And I love how you use a variety of repeating lines to suggest shape and texture in your illustrations ;u;

~LONGCAT~ 09-20-2014 04:26 AM

Thank you Dongle! :3 The dragonfly larvae is for the article I wrote that will also be in the magazine. After that one is done I have an adult to draw too. (And a million more pictures XD )

~LONGCAT~ 09-24-2014 11:19 PM

A ranger? I didn't know that art was part of a ranger's duties.

Those are some really nice bugs. If you can do birds, you should let me commission you.

~LONGCAT~ 09-26-2014 01:28 AM

Dystopia: Onos my real name is there on my webportfolio. D: whatever shall I do. ( Lindsay Aspen: Traditional Artist )
Check it, I LOVE to draw birds. I don't think the world understands my love of drawing birds. Hell most of my pixel work for Mene has been birds (pigeon and flamingo).
My boss is badass and loves to give people the opportunity to excel at what they enjoy, and he saw an opportunity for me to art as a Park Ranger. I get to teach a class and draw bugs, and eventually plants and other stuff.

Dystopia 09-26-2014 01:32 AM

:o You will be stalked relentlessly.

Oh, that's pretty awesome. Then how do you feel about doing a commission for me?

~LONGCAT~ 09-26-2014 01:36 AM

If I have the time or if you don't mind waiting for me to work on it. Sure. :3

Oh Art Update! I almost forgot I took these pictures at work.
Finished one and working on the other.

Dystopia 09-26-2014 03:59 AM

Sure, I don't mind waiting. :o

I love the detail you put into your buggers.

~LONGCAT~ 09-26-2014 11:48 AM

Thanks. I can't make them too details as they're going to be sized down for the magazine. Oh an they're done in ballpoint since my department had all of its funding taken from it And couldn't purchase me art pens

Dystopia 09-26-2014 10:03 PM

Do art pens make a difference?

~LONGCAT~ 09-26-2014 11:07 PM

Smoother, more consistent lines. Most art pens are felt tip instead of ball point.

Pistachio_Moustache 09-26-2014 11:10 PM

I have some art pens I'm not using, if you want them, Long.
xD

~LONGCAT~ 09-27-2014 12:19 AM

I left mine in New Jersey. :p Thanks PiM. The pictures didn't come out too bad for ball points. I'm mostly done with the adult now, possibly some minor touches to the back wings. Then off for publication. :3

Dystopia 09-27-2014 10:28 AM

Huh. I don't like drawing with pens of any kind, but it seems like it would be harder with a felt pen. 'cause don't those leak?

~LONGCAT~ 09-27-2014 12:10 PM

They can 'pop' of you get a cheap one, ball points 'bubble'and form ink blobs just because.

Dystopia 09-28-2014 12:56 AM

o____o I've never had that happen to me. But I don't use pen very much- I love erasers. *___*

Kat Dakuu 09-28-2014 06:31 AM

I love those penned bugs. They're so detailed. You create a really nice shading texture. o.o

For publication darker lines are needed. So it has to be penned. I have a pencil drawing of a moon snail shell at work for another project but I was told it isn't dark enough and won't print out well. I love most medias of art! :3

Thank you!

Dystopia 09-30-2014 07:50 PM

Ah, I guess that makes sense. That's a bummer tho, I hate working with pens for anything. xD

~LONGCAT~ 10-05-2014 03:19 PM

I didn't take a picture of the small images I've been doing for the FAQ section of the park magazine. But I did do another watercolor.

Images for a last project that the Big Boss asked for. Like we're talking boss of the whole park.

The turtle is so cute! It looks so nice. The plants are so clear too, but I like your drawings of animals the best.

It's so neat you get to do projects like that.

sjacklene 11-19-2014 01:36 AM

Wow longcat! Maybe you should have become an artist instead of a ranger. These are AMAZING!

~LONGCAT~ 12-10-2014 03:04 AM

Thanks. I decided that between art school and getting a BS I didn't want to become an art teacher. So I became a Park Ranger that teaches art classes. XD

Last few projects
These are some of the thumbnail drawings I did for the magazine.

And my last two watercolors of the season.

- I did this as a teaching tool, I used the different brushes/techniques I taught to make one cohesive picture.
