...You guys have no idea how long it took me to make this character look right.

I first had this guy's concept around four years ago. I saw it on my mind's eye but it was all too blurry and strange. I couldnt' draw it but I knew it was beautiful.

Four years later, broken up with my ex and everything, I'm left with so many RP OCs that need to be taken in or something.

I decided to tinker and remake them so I could still use them.

One of them was this guy. YES. HE'S A GUY.

He's a unicorn character with the elements of earth and water. But mostly earth. He's supposed to have an ethereal feel about him. Something that feels so harmless, petite and nice to look at. Easy on the eyes kind of look.
He's supposed to be a guardian of dreams sort of thing.

Originally, there were no jewels at all. The cloth was differently structured too. Excuse the mess up on the hair. I...didn't intend to >_>;

He looks...cluttered to me. I wanted something simple and yet nice to the eyes. I do know details are cool but since there's no unifying theme with what I used, I feel he looks messy.

Help? O_o

And oh, while you're at it, help me try to draw him better by also critiquing how I could express...him some more.

._.

Great drawing you've got there, very detailed!

But you're right, if you want it simpler - you've way over-done it. ^^; Try maybe only having one string and one pendant on the necklace, maybe just 3 stones on the belt and no intricate metal/leather work (don't know what material the belt is), same with the arm-band, just simplify it. The rose boa, could it possibly be a part of his outfit that he sometimes wears? When I think of character designs, I think of comics that I'm making and I remember that whatever design I'm going to decide on, I'm going to have to draw it over and over again. Would this drive you crazy to draw over and over again? Maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't - that's a personal preference, but something you have to decide upon to finalize your character designs.

That said, it is a lovely drawing, I'm enjoying the nice details you have in it, and I like the art-nouveau-ish quality that is produces. ^_^

Thank you so much! ^_^

Umi really has that rose vine about him. That was what REALLY got me intimidated and frightened to draw it way back in HS. I wasn't that detailed yet but I was getting there. : /

Do you think the jewels are somewhat in sync with another? I feel they aren't. Don't know what the belt's made of either. XD I have a thing for jewels that have to be in sync/have a unified something together...

...Everything's so scary and detailed but look at his hat. PLAIN. -L-

I do plan to redraw him again and see what works. I'm quite glad I can finally draw the rose boa now.

Ooh. Art noveau? o: Seriously? -is very much a fan of the art style- That was unexpected! But really? -squeals-

Details - my breakfast, lunch and dinner. x3

Well, what keeps me from cluttering my characters in such a way is thinking on how one piece of clothing can have a deep meaning to the person, or even is supposed to show the persionality of the character more deeply by adding it in a bold way, so whenever you see a character with that piece of clothing, they know its yours.

Hah, well, at least thats how I think xD
Awsome drawing by the way.

Oh, if it looks too detailed on some parts and too plain on others why not even it out and maybe put something from the detailed side to the hat? @ 3 @

...I was having way too much fun drawing. And I really do have a penchant for jewelry. At first it was all simple and easy on the eyes.

Then I impromptu`d the whole jewels and belt.

I didn`t realize how "wrong" it was until I finished it already. It felt...far from my goal.

I like the jewelry but there is no unifying theme and at the same time, it becomes less simple.

Nyahaha. You noticed the lack of pattern on the hat! D:

...For I have no idea what to do about it either.

Thank you though! : S

I also do that with my OCs... I have no idea why I experimented and went overboard with him. O.o

kuu well thats not really a bad thing xD [ Drawing is about having fun, I think x3 ]
I sometimes astray from my goals when I draw some of my OCS >3< Like I make them more realistic and stuff, or add peircings or--*headdesks* This isn't exactly what you wanted so why not try again, or maybe practice around with his stuff and such @ [email protected] Maybe I give bad advice.

I am taking the advice of practicing just to get a feel of it.

: /

Since it's such an old idea that's finally been put into paper and all not to mention how "awesome" I feel it is from way back and even up to now, that could explain why I'm so critical. Then again I AM naturally critical of my works as it is. >w<

I must say he looks maybe a little bit too girly. He does have beautiful eyes all mouth and all, but maybe the face is just too round? Try to give him a longer face? You know to make him look more manly. The long hair and the elven ears are a very good touch to make him look ethereal.
But I must say I don't like the hat, it sort of cuts off the look of the hair. >.< Don't know if you get me. XD
And for the drap that it's over his shoulder under the vines, make it so it's just on one side and not on both cause it's making it too cluttered. Because on the other side there is also the extra tissu.
The neck lace is just too much. Make it more simple by taking somethings off.
But I must say I love the roses and the other jewelry. <3 They are so pretty and complex. I hope you are not doing a manga with that cause it would be long... XD

Actually, I really want him to have a round face. It's not so obvious but he has a chignon and braid at the back of his head. I just wasn't able to draw the braid.

There was a doodle of the hair on the side -empty space- but it got washed out when I scanned it. >_>;

If I gave him a longer face, he wouldn't stand out anymore! I wanted to make his family strange. They're all half brothers with different fathers and need separate looks. In a scale of manliness, he's the lowest. He's supposed to look kind of young and in my universe, the unicorns are all squirts.

Sorry for justifying but that's how the OC was really made. XD;

I'm wondering, should I replace the whole jewelry set with something else? I realize that a lot of people seem to agree that the whole harem styled jewelry are quite overdone. I also realized it's not his character as well. : /

If ever, wouldn't it be too bare?

What can you guys advise? D:

I'd like to revise the design but keep the hat and rose vines. Though you're right, I need to think of a way to keep the hat and make it seem meaningful.
