Suggestions For The Hopeless? || Beware: May Blind

This is my first ever attempt at using Photoshop to color something. I'm wondering if its completely worthless, or if its something that I could be able to sell/auction. And if so, a range of pricing would also be nice. =D

Critiquing loved. Flaming? Not so much.

BettyBeat 12-07-2007 11:38 PM

I really like How you've colored her so far, and the actual outfit is nice.

The arms look awkward, though. :/

I did a brief redline for the arms. This isn't completely accurate, but you'll get the idea, I guess. :]

Thank you. =D

Ignore the arms, they need practice. xD I'll learn to do them right one of these days. Or I'll stick to my style of stick-figure like women with inward legs and elbows in poses that as if they've just fallen down the stairs... >.>; *hopeless*

BettyBeat 12-07-2007 11:45 PM

A way to fix it is by looking at a refrence picture.

Look one up on the internet or take a picture of yourself in the pose you want to draw. :]

Dystopia 12-07-2007 11:47 PM

Thanks for the advice. =D

BettyBeat 12-07-2007 11:51 PM

You're welcome, Anna! :]]

Madoneko 12-07-2007 11:58 PM

It looks really good so far!! ;D

Maybe it could be even better if you can be a little more daring with the shading?
More very dark, and very light, could emphasize it a bit. If not, soft shading is good too!
And the shoulders are a tiny bit uneven and a little bit round, so if you adjust them and the arms it would sharpen it up a bit.

Apart from that it's a really good picture, looks awesome! Did a good job for your first time on photo shop! ^^

Dystopia 12-08-2007 12:03 AM

@ Madoneko - Thank you! =D
xD I was terrified of messing up the shading, so I kept using the blur tool. Did I overdo it?
Thanks, I'll try to fix the shoulders next time I open it up.

Be not afraid! xD
I know what you mean. But I think, as far as shading goes, it's better to fail gloriously with lots of contrast. I improved so much when I finally decided to take a chance and draw dark.

Dystopia 12-08-2007 02:20 AM

=P I started out trying to cell-shade, but I got so scared because it looked so crappy and I started to blur the hell out of it. xD

Caeluma 12-08-2007 03:41 AM

thats not blindng

kimu 12-08-2007 07:43 PM

I think its really good for your first try :3
You could sell art if you develop more of a style, I think.

Don't mind the bows, I was just joking around. And, the lines arnt as perfect as I wanted them to be, my mom's mouse wouldnt move around the curve so it took a while.

Anywaayysss, one arrow is pointing at the "hair in the back" another at the shoulders and how the figure doesnt make sence, and at the bottom to where the hands are is a purple outline of some part of the dress, showing that the clothing should be flexible and more...cluttered? Rather, more like clothing : ) You can always take a look at how clothing folds before hand, it helps me.

If you practice it with these pointers you will be able to make your own style and will be able to refine as much as you want, in my theory xD

Oh, one last thing. I tried to darken and lighten the part of the clothing that you colored myself, but I gave up since I cant do it with thiz mouse. So I just did a lot of lines in several places, but you get the idea right? There should be more flexibility in darkness and light, but not so much flexibility that it turns out all gray and blurred. And bold lines arnt bad either, even the lines that you think may look bad, in fact they can make the picture look 10 times better.

One last last last thing, I think the eyes should be less wide, unless you wanna turn that into a style [ dont be lazy even you are doing it just for convinence, in the long run youll start to try drawing less wider eyes ] ooor they could be more expressive. Like if she was sad, the eyes should show it [ Not nessesarily crying, crying can only be powerful if the eye shows it more than the tears ] Heck, even being emotionless can be an emotion in an eye. [ An eye that is locked onto something and left on bodly, for example ]

Kadrias 12-08-2007 08:26 PM

kimu, may I hug you for giving such helpful constructive crit? xD

Avvy 12-08-2007 08:44 PM

I agree with Bettbeat about the arms. So far so good. I hope you finish it. It will look much better once its all done.

Dystopia 12-08-2007 09:07 PM

@ Kimu - xD Thanks for all the advice. o.o And the bows. I'll use them to wrap Christmas presents. x3
>.> I seriously don't know how to make the eyes look expressive. xD I barely know how to shade them, to tell you the truth. Do you know any good tutorials?

kimu 12-09-2007 12:53 PM

Yessh. Use them wisely.
No problem <3 *deathhugs kadrias*

[drew the lolita one with the mouse again, never again... ]

And shading is actually a lot easier than it looks, just fill the eye with the color you want it to be, then go up in darker colors and blend it together if you want a blended look, maybe add a few white spots here and there .

kimu 12-09-2007 11:04 PM
