Your Style, or others?

Drawing is a fun thing to do as most know, but how many of us actually 'practice' our own methods of adapting a style to our likings, or do we just try and copy directly from one author/artist.

I personally draw my own way. i draw in anime and in my own anime style. I believe it brings character to my art.

So;
-Do you draw your own way?
-Do you tend to try another artists ways?

Aliena 07-14-2007 02:05 PM

I think my earliest influences were Disney and western style animation. When I grew more serious about wanting to be able to draw, I started looking at a few comic artists, most notably Steve McNiven, who drew for the now defunct Crossgen comic, Meridian. I loved his work, so I studied it. But as I kept developing my own style, I started moving more and more into something (hopefully) unique.

And when I made my jump from lined art to lineless painting, I think I settled into a style that I've not really seen as much. Sure, when you're doing realism (or semi-realism, which is where I'm at), things can look very similar to other artists and I do study other digipainters to try to figure out how they do certain things (hair, clouds, skin tones, etc), but in the end, I do it my way - it's more fulfilling and a heck of a lot easier than trying to emulate someone else. Still, looking at others' work does help me spot flaws in my own as well as areas I can improve on.

CLAMP 07-14-2007 04:24 PM

I agree w/ you Aliena and I could NEVER draw in disney animatiuon style. I tried it when I was younger and I could never succeed. i always ended up w/ a weird Mickey Mouse or other character of that such.

ToriKat 07-14-2007 04:24 PM

  • The most common comment I will get on my art is that it is reminiscent of CLAMP. I admit, CLAMP is my influence in drawing the anime-manga style. But the way I draw bodies, expressions, hair and so on, I perceive at least, are my own. But just because of the eyes, people are like, "You draw like CLAMP!"

CLAMP 07-14-2007 04:36 PM

I love CLAMP to and they influence me to. They draw in a really nice style, but like I said, I make it my own and really try and make it look similar, but not the same.

galy 07-14-2007 06:17 PM

when i was in elementary school i'd draw weird stuff like trolls and monsters. i didn't imitate any cartoons i watched [which is really strange now that i think about it] and i have never really been into anime, so that hasn't influenced me at all.

i don't know, i drew realism most of my life. the style or whatever you want to call it - just came on it's own a couple of years ago when i got tired of drawing realism. i never practiced it, i just draw that way i guess?

ToriKat 07-14-2007 06:22 PM

  • @Sirris2: But no one can draw the same way as them. You can imitate qualities and whatnot, but essentially, it's yours. What I'm saying is that I have in a sense integrated my influences (I was originally much more influenced by Disney) to make my own. But it's just one quality that makes people think...homg, CLAMP. XD

CLAMP 07-14-2007 08:19 PM

Tori: I know that. It's just I was saying the IDEA of them to inspire your art, not exactly copying.

fongmingyun 07-14-2007 08:43 PM

lol. I don't know what others see in my art. I'm influenced by a lot of things really, but I can't pick out any specifically large influences.

Melilot 07-14-2007 08:52 PM

I'm trying to imitate disney now.
LIke... Hunchback of notre dame.
Pocahontas. Alice in Wonderland (a little. Not much. I like the way alice is drawn, and the ideas for the queen's guarden influence me.)
You know, the ones that came out in the 90s.
When disney still primarily did animation. :|
Years ago.

At other times, I'm trying to imitate apocalyptic style western/american cartoons.
Really cool.

Most of the time, to get a commish done (cuz that's all I seem to be drawing... >__<), I draw what I think is cute, what I think is sexy, what I think is 'cool'. I mean, pertaining to style.
And then, I spaz out over 'zomgwilltheylikeiiits?'. Lolnooo.

I take all these n' try to integrate them.
Except nothing's been happening with my style. :x
WHaaaaiii.... *whines*

linkfreak131 07-14-2007 09:36 PM

I tend to look at other artists for insparation from time to time.

When I was young, and first starting to actualy get a grasp of what art is, I did try to coppy other people's style. SailorMoon's pretty big eyes, thoes sort of things. But, no, I don't coppy other people's work style because they earned that style. I look at it for insparation, but I don't try to coppy it. ^_^;;;

CLAMP 07-14-2007 09:59 PM

I did the Sailor Moon eyes to! I still like them and the hair styles they had.

Twism 07-15-2007 03:25 PM

I think most anime style artists started out trying to imitate / copy someone else's style. Otherwise they'd probably come up with something extremely warped and ugly...considering they were beginners O_o; XD

I started out trying to imitate both Sailor Moon and CLAMP...which made my art look really ugly, too LOL (they...don't mix well XD)

After drawing a while, I guess my style started evolving on its own. I got some influence from Aoi Nanase also. And...it's pretty much my own style now (though totally and completely generic looking =_=")

I think this is probably the pattern most anime artists follow? Start out imitating...but since no one can truly have someone else's style, it starts slowly changing into their own style?

CLAMP 07-15-2007 05:54 PM

I totally agree with you Twism. We all start learning from someone else, then going in our own style.

Ah, but doesn't every artist in general?
My art teacher always says: "What influences you? What artists?" whenever I draw or paint my own artwork.

Immitation is necessary.
Copying...
That's how I hear some art teachers teach learning one's own style.

BALLBALLBALL 07-16-2007 07:47 PM

WELL ID LIKE TO BELIEVE THT MY STYLE REALLY FOCUSES THE REAL ME ONTO PAPER.

WITHOUT DRAWING, MY MIND WOULD BE SCATTERED AND TORN.

DRAWING RELEASES EMOTION BETTER THAN ANY OTHER METHOD OF SELF-EXPRESSION.

POEMS, YES THEY ARE MEANINGFUL, BUT THEY CANNOT PHYSICALLY ILLUSTRATE ONE'S TRUE PERSONALITY WITH FULL EFFECT.

MY STYLE IS EDGY, LOOSE AND ALMOST ROUGH. THIS REFLECTS MY SOMEWHAT DISTRESSED MOOD THAT I FEEL ON A REGULAR BASIS WHEN EXPRESSING MYSELF.

[/code]

CLAMP 07-17-2007 05:43 AM

BALL: I know. I just can't express myself with out art. Life would suck if I didn't ahve it and it always cheers me up, even when my art sucks at those hard points. Recently I drew a cute plushie and it brought my spirits up, I had masted my base finally and i was happy. So yeah, it is a great form of expressin.

`Mel 07-21-2007 04:58 PM

For me it's kind of mixed.
When I see someones art that I really like, I try & incorporated it into what I draw. What I do know will always be my style no matter how many times it changes, I'll still do a lot of things the same :) Can't change that.

Spatterdash 07-21-2007 07:45 PM

Hmm. My style's heavily influenced by Western comic and cartoon art, but I try not to imitate anyone in particular too heavily (though I will admit I do reference from drawings by my favourite artists if I'm not sure on how to go about something). Occasionally, just to try it, I'll attempt to copy a manga style or an old-fashioned comic-book style, and quite often I'll go through a temporary stage of incorporating elements of another artist's style when I've just discovered someone whose work I love, but usually, I stick to more familiar techniques, and just try and keep improving the details and refining my work.

chai 07-23-2007 05:32 PM

most of my art blocks come from my total lack of style... i never have just ONE way of doing things, i always have to try out different ways, different styles of eyes, hair, coloring, whatever. and so my art is totally inconsistent. ^^;; I always try to make it the "best" i can, but when i'm exposed to sooo many different artists (especially the japanese and korean) i am constantly trying to imitate their styles, and since they're all so vastly different... well you can imagine what my style goes through. XD;;;

but as the people before have said, i started out imitating my fave anime artists. =)

Florentine 07-23-2007 09:56 PM

  • I'd love to be able to say that I had a style of my own, btu I think I'm a long way from that still. Not until you have mastered all the basics can you truly find your own style in my opinion. What I draw now does not feel comfortable to me yet. It's a strange mix between other people's styles and realism, with a little of my inability sprinkled on top. I have great reservations when I draw, mostly about whether I do something right, hence I tend to stick ot the familiar, which always ends up looking the same. Dull.

Lennifer 07-23-2007 10:58 PM

  • I'm influenced by a lot of things, but I can never specifically say what. I've never actually been compared to other artists, except at school and such when I've painted large canvas drawing and been told my characters look like someone from an artwork I've never seen or heard on in my life. XD

Probably the biggest influence on my Art is Kaori Yuki. At one point in time, I loved drawing Disney styled <3 I was a lot younger xD

I like to think I can draw in my own style, and like to draw in my own style even when i'm not supposed to. For school, I have to copy other artists styles and can do most of the time. To start off with years ago I used to Copy pokemon art <3 But, they where pretty warped. XD

Since I'm stubborn, I stopped trying to imitate other peoples styles after not very long and ended up blending a lot of things together. my art was pretty warped for a while. At current, I'd like to think I sort of have my own style, at least I think I do. xD

Candy Apple 07-23-2007 11:43 PM

I draw my own way and always have, and I'm glad because now I have a style that I would say is fairly distinguishable. Even when I try something different it will have that unmistakably Candy Apple touch. There are qualities about other art I like that I may try to adapt to my own but in the end the work is purely mine <3

To be perfectly honest (maybe even somewhat unfair...), I feel a little peeved when I see artists who imitate another style as closely as possible. I have a friend whose work VERY closely resembles another artists and I can't help but feel she is stealing a part of that artist.

I know it's silly to think of a style like its copyrighted or something but that artist has probably taken so much time to perfect their work only to spawn off cheap imitations. At least, thats how I feel.

In retrospect, imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

kimu 07-24-2007 05:18 PM

I started copying Card Captor Sakura, and every anime pic in devianart years ago, like, when I was 10? All I could draw was stick figures of em xD
Now at 13 I created my own unique style, and Im getting sharpening it up every time I draw.

I think I was influenced by Eureka Seven A LOT. I love the style, its so....well, it hits the soft spot I have for unique art like that.

Plum Lovelace 07-24-2007 11:04 PM

I always look to other artists for inspiration, but I will always draw in my own style. For example, Kaori Yuki (artist of Angel Santuary and Godchild) has influenced me a lot, and before her was Yii Watase. However I do think my style is tons different than theres

Thing is, I have many many many styles >.>; (especially for coloring. XD; )

I find trying new things is fun, and it shows that an artist is ok with going out of there comfort zone <3 (which is important for me =]) However, I always have the -one- style to fall back on. =3
