Got some Copic Markers! =D

I got a 12 basic colour set, and a 12 skin tone set. n___n

Got any tips for using them?

April Fool Romance 08-02-2007 12:07 AM

Oh I'm so jealous DDD:

Well, try out the different levels of skin tone colors so you get used to the different shades. As for the color set(I have that too :3) just have fun. I would suggest getting a grey scale too! Those are FANTASTIC <3

Where did you get the skin tone?

Glammy 08-02-2007 01:51 AM

  • Aaaah. I'd suggest similar to what April Fool has said.

    Just test them out. See how each marker works with the other. Some markers have different reactions with other markers (eg; some bleed more, some blend well, some don't blend at all).

    Try some different techniques as well. Like just laying down a base colour, letting it dry and then laying more colours on top of it (colours wont blend much, you'll get more of a 'cell shaded' look), or quickly putting as many colours down as possible, so they blend alot. 'Mixing' colours also gives you some really nice and interesting effects.

    Also, I'd suggest expementing with different inking pens ( that's if you ink your drawings). It's a pain in the butt to find out your pen 'bleeds' with markers halfway through a picture.

    Another thing is to try some other media with your markers. Like a mix of pencils and markers. That can give an interesting effect, but can also make your markers uh.
    Work not quite as well as they did before you used them over pencil D':

    Try looking up some tutorials on [url=www.deviantart.com]Deviant Art[/ur]. There are some REALLY good ones on there.

COPIC marker! 2 sets too?! *jealous*
I also want marker!

Except Deviant, www.mangarevolution.com also have a bunch of marker tutorial...but I think most of them is linked between each other. haha.

crystal_wings6 08-03-2007 01:09 AM

OMG I want a set too. T.T And yep like what they said it's good to try them with other media. A mixed media is very cool. I love doing that. ^^

oohhh You'll like those alot~! Trust me~!
Just remember that layering the ink brings great tones and GREAT RESPONSIBILITY ~!

  • Thanks for your help, everybody. n___n

Markers are my favorite to work with. I've been using Prismacolors for years, and my set just now died out completely.
I'd kill for a set of Copics. o___o;
Been wanting to get my hands on a nice set of those for a while, but I can barely afford an 8-pack of Crayola's right now. X'D

Yinneh-dono 08-07-2007 08:46 AM

I haven't had any yet.[Sooo expensive!]
But I found some tutorials for you that I find quite good. ^^[x][x]

Hey Pearl,

:D I love Copic markers and have been using them for years now.
The paper that I love to use is Borden's Paris paper.(it has a sketch of the Eiffel tower on the cover) It comes in a pad and is very smooth and hard with a good weight to it. I have never gotten used to using flimsy papers for marker work.

Also, I use pigment pens for my linework. Zig or Graftobian...whatever is reasonably priced.

Did you know that you can work out your drawing, ink it, and then photocopy it onto your marker paper? As long as your paper is 8.5x11 inches (cut it down if you need to) and not too terribly heavy, it works. It works with the Paris paper too. The photocopies don't budge with the copic markers. (I believe that I've seen this paper at "Dick Blick" art supplies. Often in the marker section)

Have fun and don't forget that it's helpful to make up a chart for yourself of all your colours with their numbers on the paper you are going to use. That way, you have a quick reference when it comes time to choose colours. (I'll do that with the offcuts from when I cut my paper down)
I also found that you can layer up Copics to a certain extent, so I keep light tones of some colours to either brighten an area or "knock it back".
(this from the gal with something like over 80 copics, some multiples and the refill bottles~ they're worth it for the colours that you use a lot! I built up my collection over a couple years. :lol: ) Enjoy!

I did this drawing with Copics. It was for a kid's book full of fables.

Copics are so expensive. =w=

I have Prismacolors.

padfootsy 09-11-2007 11:52 AM

AAARGH! I bought ONE copic marker just for basic inking while I was at comic-con, since it was a little cheaper than usual, and I freaking lost it before I could use it.

Naeru 09-12-2007 11:42 PM

wow lucky o.o

I only own one copic marker. I bought it for inking and such. Those things are 5 dollars each! talk about expensive...

mangacatgirl 09-16-2007 06:17 AM

I have a set of copic markers I won from an art competition. It was a sort of "Iron Chef" spin off, but with art. We were all on stage, they gave us a random ingredient and 10 minutes to come up with a masterpiece ^.^;

Anyway... I've tried using them... I fail miserably at markers though... I just can't work with them at all, it's so frustrating x.x; So I can't really help... My marker pieces look ridiculously bad... Like an elementary student did them x.x; Sorry! I wish I could help ^.^;

Shrii 09-16-2007 08:35 AM

You are soooooooo lucky. I've been wanting a set for years - but when it comes down to it I just plain can't afford them. I save up for them but end up having to pay for other things ;_;.

Here's a pretty nifty tutorial I found a few months ago. I thought it was really easy to follow:
