Okay, so... I like all kinds of music (with the exceptions of most country and "gansta" rap), but I have an annoying lack of musical knowledge. I hear things on a tele show or commercial, in a store, or even on the radio (it's rare that I listen to the radio, though), and I'm all "ouu, that's spiff!" and then realize that I have no idea who the band is or how to find out. -.-;;
So, help a chick out, yes? I don't care if it's rock, pop, raggae, old, new, classical, American, British, Japanese, Russian, mainstream, Indie... if it sounds good, I want to know about it.
Tell me a band or an artist, what kind of music it is, and why you like them. I'll look them up on YouTube (or you could post a vid?) and see if I like them, and then go from there.

I promise I'm harmless! You'd only have to worry if you were a Transformer!
Well, lessee:
Nightwish They're a Finnish symphonic metal band that does some truly awesome things with orchestral instruments. I suggest the songs "Nemo", "Sleeping Sun", and "Ghost Love Score".
Nickelback Canadian rock band who has a way of mixing sexy-racy songs with inspirational ones. Try "If Everyone Cared", "Just to Get High" (the song is actually not supporting drug use, but about the singer asking why his friend is destroying his life), and "Burn it to the Ground" for some fun.
Natasha Bedingfield British pop singer whose songs tend to be fun and meaningful. "Pocketful of Sunshine" and "Angel" are good ones to try.
And if you have any interest in orchestral/instrumental music I suggest any movie score done by Hans Zimmer (The Last Samurai; Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest and At World's End; The Dark Knight; he also helped on Transformers Revenge of the Fallen). Do you have any interest in art music, AKA Classical? ^^
Sorry, I'm a music major, so I'm pretty much surrounded by it all the time.

Queen: britsh rock band fron late 70's early 90's. major hits like "Boheman Raspody" you should know this if you like wayns world, "killer queen", "Thease Are The Days Of our Lives" and "We Are The Chamipons." the reason why i like them is cuz they where different at the time when rock music was really good!

Android Lust, (and if you're into the sound, Chiasm is another awesome band to check out.) It's really moody, dark industrial type stuff. Great when you want to kill something xD
The Jennifers. (I can send you their better works, if you're interested. I can't find any links to it D:) They don't have very much material out, but they were pretty fun and chilled out while they lasted.
Cloetta Paris Sweet and catchy without being your typical radio pop band.
Vermillion Lies Cabaret, strange and hilarious and very... um... theatrical. xD
Pretty Balanced (Their new name is The Alphabet, but I hate it so I use the old one.) They're sort of piano rock type stuff, I find it very soothing.
The Academy Is... Sort of just a generic indie band, but at least they don't have an obnoxious lead singer!
I have lots more, if you're interested in any of those. x3

Joy Division: Earlier stuff is slightly punk influenced, later stuff is kind of dark. Been my favorite band for about seven years. They're pretty damn good.
The Specials: Second wave ska, amazing. Nice, upbeat tones.
Toots and The Maytals: Reggae/first wave ska. Also really good. Kinda upbeat, pretty good.
Cock Sparrer: Really amazing Oi! band. Despite the fact that they're Oi!, there songs are really catchy.
The Adicts: Really good British punk band. A lot clearer than other punk bands.
Toy Dolls: Another English punk band; kind of have a really strange sound to them, a lot like The Dead Milkmen.
The Stray Cats: Really nice Rocksteady band.
Madness: Another second wave ska band.
Bad Brains: Hardcore punk band, really obnoxious sound, but I like it.
Sorry if it seemed like a lot, I just have a lot of favorites. Also, if you're music knowledge is as bad as you say it is, I figured you wouldn't mind the overload. xD

Skye (can I call you Skye?), I am interested in classical music. As I said, I'm up for pretty much anything. I forgot to mention that I'm not really into Christian music unless it's Christmas songs (I'm not Christian, so... ya know). But other than that and the other two aforementioned genres (I like funny country songs, by the way), I'm open to anything~
To everyone else, thank you for the suggestions and keep them coming! I don't have a lot of time today, so I'll have to check them out later this week, but I'll give you some feedback on what I think of the sounds soon.
Fabby, if I look up that one band and like them, I may take you up on your offer... but it will have to be a while. My computer is fried, so I've been using the ones at the library. I'm hoping to replace mine before the end of the year, but if my job hunt doesn't get going any better... *sighs*

@ Sen Lee: Skye is more than fine. I'll also answer to LKS. I actually wouldn't suggest much Christian music since I actually listen to very few Christian bands. I do like Gregorian chant, which is the music untilized in Roman Catholic Churches in the Middle Ages and is still alive today. I find it very soothing.
Okay, if you're up to western art music, there is a lot to choose from. I suggest starting with some of the big name composers:
Johann Sebastian Bach This guy is pretty important to musical theory since I can't tell you how many of his pieces we've used to study counterpoint. The man was a genius. He did a lot of church music though, but try his Brandanburg Concertos and the music from his keyboard etude book The Well Tempered Clavier. Most of his sons went into music as well, most notably C.P.E. Bach and J.C. Bach. Both of them wrote keyboard music as well, but they wrote more secular pieces.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Another genius. I would try some of his operas like The Marriage of Figaro. His symphonies are good too.
Ludwig van Beethoven One of the earliest Romantic composers. Of his works I suggest his Fifth and Ninth Symphonies, as well as the popular tunes Fur Elise and the Moonlight Sonata. He's one of my favorites.
Gustav Holst He's not as famous as the previous three, but his Planet Suites are among my favorite pieces of art music ever. I also suggest his First Suite in E-flat, which is a staple for wind ensembles.
There's a lot more, but these are somewhere to start. ^^

Owl City- electronic/pop- He's got to be my favorite. His music is so cute, fun, and dreamy. If you're in a bad mood his music will lift your spirits. Check him out.
Imogen Heap- a little bit of everything, electronic/alternative/ Indie - She's very popular now, and for good reason. I don't of anyone else who sounds like her and her stuff is good.
Epik High- they mainly rap but it's behind incredible music. I don't like rap and I really like them so maybe you will too. They're a Korean band. My favorite song by them is One. It's incredible. They do a lot of remixes on other bands' songs as well.
Big Bang- The have pop/rock/rap/hip hop. They do a lot of different types of music. This is a great group of guys. They are cute, quirky, and talents. Again, Korean. While I have no idea what they're saying I find their music kind of addicting. You'll find at least one guy to crush on in this band. T.O.P. was mine. xD
Oceanlab- Wikipedia says this band's genre is vocal trance...so yeah. I've only heard one song from them, On a Good Day, and it's so amazing and beautiful. Even if just for that song, you should look her up.
Brooke Waggoner- Indie- When I went to see Owl City live in concert I saw her live as well since she's touring with him and she has so much talent. She plays piano so well and her music and lyrics are refreshing and original. She's definitely not had the kind of attention she deserves yet.
The Hush Sound- Indie/alternative - A friend introduced me to their music not too long ago and very good. They tell stories with their lyrics and music and they are definitely stories you'll want to hear over and over again.
Elevntyseven- electronic - This band in one word is fun. They will sing about Conan O'Brian, Twilight, and space. And they will make you laugh and you'll just have fun listening to music.
Jason Mraz- He puts many styles together to make his own. Probably what sets him apart from quite a bit of the mainstream music is that he adds elements of reggae to his music which pulls off very well. He's incredibly popular now too. His style is so alluring and just go listen to him if you haven't already. You'll see what I mean.
The Fray- alternative/rock - The singer has a unique voice and I can't pinpoint the exact reason why I like them but I just really do.
The Sound of Arrows- pop/electronic They don't have a whole lot out but Into the Clouds and M.A.G.I.C. are great songs. It's good mood music.
Rachmaninoff- romantic- His compositions are powerful and sensitive at the same time. If you can find a recording of a good pianist playing his work I'd buy it.
Debussy and Ravel- impressionistic- Both of these men were impressionistic composers and they both wrote beautiful music. For the most part it's music that very relaxing, even in the intense sections.
Chopin- romantic -My goodness, what can I even say...he's created some of the most well known romantic pieces ever. They are incredible. Some are very exciting while others will make you melt.
Those last four as some of the most well known composers in history along with those mentioned by Ladyknightskye. Listen to those as a start.
I think this is a long enough list for now. xD
Take your time.
EDIT: I had to come back and add this artist to the list: Regina Spektor- She has her own style. She's incredible. I've never head anyone use their voice like she does. Her stuff is so catchy and original.
I should add Muse to this list as well. They are basically alternative rock, but they add classical elements to some of their songs. They are an incredible band. Lots of their songs give me chills. And their music isn't just composed of the standard chord progressions of most alternative rock groups that make most songs in that genre familiar or repetitive. Definitely one of the most creative rock bands I've heard.

[A note to mods/admins: I know that I'm technically not supposed to make a double post, but considering that the thread hasn't been touched in three days I was worried that the people I'm responding to wouldn't see the response if all I did was edit my last post. Please forgive me! T ^T]
Now... I finally broke down and bought a new set of earbuds from the library because I can't find my old pair, nor can I find my nice Sony studio headphones. ¬_¬ So now I can give you guys some feedback on your suggestions!
@Skye: Nightwish was rather impressive. I like their sound a lot. ^_^ I knew of Nickleback, and they are indeed a good band. I'm not always in the mood to listen to their music, though. o_o I'm glad you listed them, 'cause I'd forgotten about them. Natasha Bedingfield sounds familiar... Has she been on the Late Show with Letterman before? Either way, she has a beautiful voice!
@ainebella: Queen is awesome. They're one of the reasons I like the movie A Knight's Tale so much... that and Heath Ledger is awesome.
@Fabby: I watched a bit of the video for Android Lust. They're very interesting. x3 I like the sound, though, and that of Chiasm. I like things that aren't really run of the mill, ya know? The Jennifers are totally sway music, the type of music that makes me move whether I realise it or not. Which I like, mind you. So, yeah... when I get my laptop, I'll be happy to take you up on your offer. ^^ Oh, and Cloetta Paris is nice~ I bet it will make my husband's eyes roll, but I don't care. (I didn't even get to listen to it properly because the stupid library computer keeps lagging, but even so I know I like them.)
Ah... and it won't let me listen to Vermillion Lies without lagging, either. I guess I'll have to try again later. (I have a job now, getting new laptop before end of year, YUSH!! @[email protected] Stupid library computers...)
I'll just update this post with new feedback on the suggested bands unless someone else posts. >_>;

Alrighty, just toss a PM my way whenever you have your new stuff. And I'm quite glad you found some stuff you liked :D
It might just be Last, not your computer. The player's really sporadic for me..
Just some more, in case you want them (and I linked to YouTube this time, hopefully that will work better?):
Unter Null is another good dark electro band, if you like things a bit on the rougher side. I:Scintilla is more melodic. And of course I have to recommend Emilie Autumn.
Also, some of the people from The Jennifers later went on to form Supergrass, so you might like them too.

I second LadyKnightSkye's recommendation of Within Temptation. I haven't listened to them in a while besides the main singer's, Sharon den Adel, collab with Armin van Buuren which I really like. I used to listen to them constantly though, but am trying not to wear out the music I listen to.
A couple more suggestions...
The Ready Set and Heyhihello -- They are both electronica/pop -- The Ready Set has some rock elements though. Heyhihello kind of reminds me of Owl City, so if you like it you might them Heyhihello too.
Priscilla Ahn -- folk -- Her music is really dreamy and I think her voice is beautiful.

Okay! I'm back to give more feedback~ =3
@Fabby: Vermillion Lies's Global Warming was hilarious. They're style is a bit over the top, but damn they'd be perfect to listen to if I was having a not so good day. Pretty Balanced had a nice sound, too. The singer has a lovely voice. As for The Academy Is... , the samples they have on that site you linked to are pretty poor. What I heard from the 30 second clip they had, though, was pretty cool.
@Amelia: I liked Joy Division. The song I listened to on YouTube was rather mellow, nice to listen to. The Specials were good, too. o_o Wow, you all have had good taste in moosic so far! I really liked the song I listened to by Toots and The Maytals. I'm a fan of Reggae, but I've not gotten into it much because I don't know who to look for. (My first experience with it was a Japanese Reggae band. o_o) I also liked Cock Sparrer. ^_^
I have to go to work now, though. I'll come back with more gushing later. >_>;

Well, I could suggest some....well lets just say 'extreme' kind of music, but i have a feeling thats not what your looking for. I can suggest some very good bands from Sweden and that Area. 1 would be Turisas, they are a Finnish metal band from Hameenlinna, Finland. One of their songs 'Rasputin' is a current rendition of a 70's discoish kinda song by Booney M.
2. A Faroese Folk metal band, from, amazingly enough The Faroe Islands. They delve heavily into Norse mythology in their lyrics, and they actually sing in several different languages, Including: English, Faroese, German, and Swedish. at least...as far as i know..o.O could be more lol.
and 3rd. Eluveitie from Switzerland! Celtic Folk Metal with some melodic death metal influences. Very melodic, very much influenced by older Folk music. The newest band since Jethro Tull to have a flute solo loll. (Inis Mona is the name of that song btw) they introduce something i dont think has ever been seen in a band that calls themselves metal. One of the band mates (happens to be a girl) plays a Hurdy-Gurdy, which is a very old musical instrument. Sounds realllyyy cool imo.
anyway, thats only 3. and they are pretty safe for the average person lol (whatever average is supposed to mean o.O) oh btw i noticed nobody mentioned Tchiacovsky in classical music....his 6th symphony is my all time favorite. (makes me cry everytime) if you would like some more information on these bands or others feel free to ask. i love music and i like knowing other people enjoy it as much as i do. so good luck! and enjoy!

@Loveslust: I wasn't actually planning to listen to anything today because I've not been feeling well, but your description of Eluveitie intruiged me too much. So I went to look up that song, Inis Mona. I really liked it! I love it when people find new and inventive ways to use not so traditional instruments. Is that guy playing an electric bagpipe? o_O
There are hurdy gurdy music boxes in a Victorian catalogue that my mum gets in the mail... I never knew it was an actual musical instrument. That's kind of neat.
Also, don't count me out of different types of music, even if they're more hardcore. As I said, I'm open to anything... I have a very broad range of musical interests.
I'll try to review some more things soon~

AWESOME! lol another one on the bandwagon xD. i actually plan on seeing Eluveitie again within the next few weeks, they are coming to a city about an hour away. (Btw i noticed i never mentioned the second band..lol they are Tyr, after the Norse God Of Singular combat.)
Well if you want some names i would go for Amon Amarth, they are a melodic death/viking metal band from sweden. Awesome guys, met them and got my picture taken with them. Suidakra pagan folk metal. Gimme a few days i can get a list to make your head spin..lol From Black Metal to goregrind, black/death metal, swedish death metal, deathcore. Most notable i would say definatly Amon Amarth, their newest album is purely amazing. Cannibal Corpse, always the forefront in Americanized death metal. (Alex Webster is a beastt!! he's the bassist btw lol) Bloodbath from the sweds again, cant go wrong in death metal when the sweds are on the case!
With the most recent uprising of sub-genres of the metal (Go watch a documentary by Sam Dunn called Metal: A Headbangers Journey) many young bands have been forming drawing influences from several different genres. A few of these bands are The Black Dahlia Murder, Job for a Cowboy, and Whitechapel.
Ensiferum/Wintersun are very very good and definatly worth a listening too. Goatwhore, Belphagor are also very good death metal. Belphagor has a song called Bondage Goat Zombie...and every time i hear it i cant help but laugh...cause the name is absolutely preposterous. But the whole song is in latin, so +1 for metalheads lol. anywho its off to bed with me, got college allllll day again...homework never ends lol. oh and btw...i really appreciate you giving all kinds of music a chance, thats a very rare thing so dont lose it. GL and have fun listening! (not my fault if you get in trouble for headbanging and doing air guitar in your library lolllll)

Okay... time to get back on track!
@Amelia: I looked up The Adicts on YouTube and listened to Viva la Revolution... It was fun to listen to, had a nice rhythm. All I could find were lives of them... are they a small band? If so, will it be hard to find their music? Toy Dolls are definitely interesting... At first I was kinda o_O, but they grew on me before the song (Dig that groove baby, according to YouTube) was even half over. x3 They're fun~ The Stray Cats were okay. *nodnods* The are an '80s band? I wonder if I'll have trouble finding them... I have to say, I'm not sure if I like Madness because of their music or if I just can't help it because their videos are so amusing. They are catchy, though, so it's all good. ^^; I listened to I Against I by Bad Brains... after the intro it was good. >_> Kinda fun. But I think it's one of those bands I'll have to be in the mood to listen to.
@Skye: All of those are good composers. I didn't recognise Holst at first, but when I looked him up on YouTube... apparently he did the Planet suites? Very nice. =3 I totally need to listen to more Classical music. @[email protected]
@sukishine: I've actually run across the name Owl City a few times lately, including in my sister's car, as she has some of his CDs burned. (*coughs*) I hadn't listened to him, though... I'm glad you suggested him, because his music does just what you say it does. I listened to Fireflies, and that was so awesome. *_*Imogen Heap is really pretty, too... The song I listened to was kind of mellowing in a deep way, but had a nice beat, too. I'm going to say about Epik High and Big Bang that I pretty much like them by default. I <3 Asian music... And I love any chance I get to listen to the Korean language. @[email protected] Of course, it helps that both groups are good. =3
However, I am reminded that I missed Big Bang Theory on Monday due to work and need to go find a way to watch it online, so I'll give more feedback later!

Well, my favorite band will always be Coheed & Cambria. They're progressive rock, and they're interesting because every song of every album to date lines up to tell an epic sci-fi story about the solar system known as the Keywork. They've got songs ranging from very sweet to very aggressive, but if you're a first time listener, I would suggest starting with something like "A Favor House Atlantic" or "The Suffering" to get an idea of their sound.
And of course, 30 Seconds to Mars is always worth a listen. They're "space rock," and a lot of their songs are in promotion of self-discovery, which I like a lot. You have to listen to "Capricorn (A Brand New Name)," just because it was their first song ever, but "Echelon," "The Kill," and "Kings and Queens" also warrant a listen.
Then there's the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who you should have already heard of, but hey, I can forgive a minor oversight. "Don't Forget Me" and "This Velvet Glove" have been stuck in my head for weeks.
And on the Celtic rock/punk side, there's the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly. When it comes to DKM, I'll suggest songs like "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" and "As One." As for FM, try out "The Lightning Storm," "Devil's Dance Floor," and "Float." All very good.
And for a band you probably haven't heard of yet but should be hearing more of in the future -- Passion Pit. I can't even sum them up. They're synthesizer-heavy, but other than that... They're just good. The video for "The Reeling" is phenomenal, and songs like "Moth's Wings," "Folds In Your Hands," and "Eyes As Candles" are just... they're dancey, they're fun, they're deep, and just all-around amazing. Everyone should give them a shot, if for no other reason than to say you've heard them.
