Ohkay, so I'm sure many of you are familiar with the band Paramore...

No I'm not some brand-new Paramore fan, but I've just been really thinking about this lately, and I think I should bring it up here.

I love Paramore. I think they're a pretty spiffy band. I've had Riot! since the day it came out and still listen to it regularly. I also love All We Know Is Falling, though I must admit I still haven't gotten around to buying brand new eyes...

So, my favorite Paramore song was released as one of their singles: Crushcrushcrush.

I've gotten very much back into this song lately, and I realized that it can be interpreted in a variety of different ways. I looked some stuff up and asked some people, and found out there are several different interpretations of this song. If you're unfamiliar with it, here are the lyrics:

Quote:
Verse 1
I've got a lot to say to you
Yeah, I've got a lot to say
I noticed your eyes are always glued to me
Keeping them here, and it makes no sense at all

Prechorus
They taped over your mouth,
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies
They taped over your mouth,
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies
Crush...
Crush...
Crush...
Crush, crush (TWO, THREE, FOUR!)

Chorus:
Nothing compares to
A quiet evening alone
Just the one-two
I was just counting on!
That never happens
I guess I'm dreaming again
Let's be more than
This

Verse 2:
If you wanna play it like a game
Well, come on, come on. Let's play.
'Cuz I'd rather waste my life pretending
Than have to forget you for one whole minute

Repeat Prechorus/Chorus

Rock and roll, baby
Don't you know
That we're all alone now
I need something to sing about

Rock and roll, hey
Don't you know, baby
We're all alone now
I need something to sing about

Rock and roll, hey
Don't you know, baby
We're all alone now
Give me something to sing about!

Repeat Chorus x2
Ohkay, so I've always viewed it as a love song written by a girl in a Romeo-and-Juliet type of situation. For whatever reason, the two can't be together, and the song is written to her love, telling him how bad she wishes that things could work. The chorus is pretty evident of this belief, and I've found several people that say they agree completely. However, I've heard many other interpretations as well:

1: It's all a big Christian message.
I've heard this one a lot, and I can understand this train of thought. She might be claiming that all she wants is some one-on-one time with Jesus/God, and that it's the best part of her day.

2: She's a geek wanting a popular guy.
I've heard this one a lot, too, and I can understand this train of thought as well. The basic thought is that she's in love with a popular guy who reciprocates her feelings, but he won't date her because of cliques and criticism.

3: It's a girl in a long-distance relationship writing a letter to her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend has been away/on-leave for a while now and it's starting to get to her. All she wants is to be able to see him again.

These are the main three, in addition to what I thought, that I've found people believe. What do you think this song means, Menewsha? Is it any of these beliefs, or do you have your own interpretation. :) I love discussing lyrics and want to know what you think!

Well I think I've heard this song, but I don't know it, so I'm only basing this on reading the lyrics. Your second interpretation is basically what I got out of it, except I think the 'nerdy' and 'popular' parts aren't necessary, it's just a girl of any type digging a dude of any type. I also get the feeling that they used to be closer, or that a closer relationship was imminent but the guy changed his mind somehow.
In any case, it's from her to him and 'him' is heavily influenced by others.

Edit; I listened to the song too, just in case that would change anything at all. I don't feel anything different about the meaning, but the song sounds a bit more angry/bitter than I'd got just from the lyrics.

Actually, I looked up what Hayley Williams (The lead singer of Paramore) had to say about the song and she says the song was intentionally vague in meaning because it was intended to have multiple meanings, but there is one specific interpretation that she uses as the "original" or "official" meaning is very different from ANY of those:

She says that the song is a loveletter or lovesong written from the girl to the guy, as most of the interpretations stated, but she says the song is more rooted in the fact the guy doesn't actually reciprocate her feelings, but he does pretend. He toys with her emotions and she lets him because she doesn't want to lose him because she loves him too much and, in a way, has deluded herself into thinking he loves her, too.

Quote:
You wanna play it like a game,
Well, come on, come on. Let's play.
'Cuz I'd rather waste my whole life pretending
Than have to forget you for one whole minute
This makes a lot of sense when I think about it.

Quote:
They taped over your mouth
Scribbled out the truth with their lies
You little spies
This is her friends trying to show her what he's really doing to her and with her, and she won't believe them because he tells her he loves her.

Anyways, the song IS intentionally vague, so I'd still like to hear your interpretations of it. :)

I used to like that song, But now (don't hate me) I'm a little over Paramore. But I still like the end of that song.
Quote:
We're all alone now, I need something to sing about
It's like saying... we're together, the fun of the chase is over, what's the point again?

So her meaning was kind of... opposite what people seem to think? Huh.
In any case I don't like 'intentionally vague' crap. I think things should have an intended meaning, and if other interpretations happen anyway, that's great. I mean, this song could have that as it's sole intended meaning without having any different lyrics. Blegh.

As far as the whole Christian metaphor things goes, they like to try to twist any and everything to mean Jesus something. It's all bullshit.

I agree with the OP. It seems more like a story about a girl that likes a guy but can't be with him for some reason. It makes more sense than the other ideas in the OP. I can kind of see the long distance relationship thing, MAYBE.
