I don't think it's really possible to name one band supreme over all the rest. There are simply too many different genres and groups. However, I can say that I consider The Doors to be one of the most influential bands that I have ever been exposed to.

My two favorite bands at the moment are The Strokes and He is We. He is We, I found it recently, and I have fallen in love with them!!! They have such a diverse sound, great lyrics, all of it sounds wonderful. I just cant resist!!

I'd have to say The Beatles. Everyone has been influenced by them in some way or another.

But then, they were influenced by Elvis, and old rock& roll stuff from the 50s. So maybe one of those?

I think that you can't just claim one band or one musician as the BEST. the end all to end alls. It's unfair. Each genre has different things going for it, and bands from different eras had different audiences and techniques, not to mention technology. That said, I think Elvis and the Beetles helped push rock n' roll into the main stream. David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Ozzy, and Rolling Stones, Run DMC, Clash, Johnny Cash helped start their own genres and INSPIRE more great musicians. I think that's where Music Greatness should be measured: in how much they inspire.

In that case, in spite of them being recent (well, the singer died in '94, but it's still a lot more recent than Elvis) I'm going to also say Nirvana are pretty influential (even tho they were influenced by Beatles and an awful lot of other bands). I mean, who doesn't have an opinion of Kurt Cobain? Love him or hate him, it's still kinda like Jack Sparrow says when that guy tells him he's the worst pirate he ever heard of- "Aah, but you have heard of me!"

If there is a best band, they are most likely unheard of. And not even the most supreme hipsters could understand their sound.

When it comes to "best band," it is almost completely subjective, there is no such thing as that, or else we wouldn't listen to anything but the best band.
