I love finding old vinyl discs at people's yardsales. You really never know what you are going to get.

I used to have hundreds of these, but then I had to move out of my old house and I ended up selling most of them to this old hippy guy I knew.

Two I'm really trying to find again were these kids' records. They were probably from the 70s or 80s or something, since that was when there were so many albums.

One of them was this narrated storybook record, I think it was called 'The Adventures of Rag Doll and Magic Mouse' or something. The 'Rag Doll' on the cover looked suspiciously like Raggedy Ann. The person doing the mouse voice was annoyingly squeaky, and everytime anyone said his name, this little bell sound would happen at the same time as the word 'magic'. One of their adventures, I remember, took them out to sea, where they met and sang a song about a whale they called Spouter.

Another was this record by a guy named Bob McAllister. I guess he used to host some children's show called WonderRama? (Imagine how old the 'children' would be now if this was from the 70s!) Two stand out songs were one about 'Rocks' that literally listed types of rocks (to a 'rock music' backing track) "there's gneiss, marble, schist and shale!" Another song was called "Marshmellows are Funny" and was sort of a march with bad rhymes to it "they don't cost much money...to me they are yummy....I put them in my tummy!"

Vinyl is old? This is news to me. Last I checked, they're still being reprinted/sold. Vinyl is still very popular, especially in music used by DJs (because they still use Vinyl in shows), and genres like punk rock. Plus, it has a bit of "showoff" quality to collectors. In fact, Radiohead's newest album, The King of Limbs, is sold vinyl and MP3 versions only and no CD to be found.

Best bet is ebay for anything officially out of print, although there are places that sell them, they're mostly physical stores.

Aah, but I'm talking in specific about old vinyls, not saying vinyl is old.

It is cool some bands are still putting out their new stuff on albums tho. I actually saw a band once that was still putting out their stuff on those old 8 track cassettes. I thought that was all kinds of strange. Do they even make 8 track players anymore, or do you have to refurbish old ones?

Vinyl = <3

I tend to flip out when I see anyone who has a collection going. Unfortunately, my dad lost most of his but he still has a few left which I plan on stealing. He was a very happy camper when I surprised him with Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Tarkus :)

@Vix Viral- ahh, I had a friend who had Tarkus! She had all these old vids of ELP also. Emerson did some wild stuff onstage when they would play "Rondo".

BTW, I found a cool Tarkus-inspired fanart on dA here: thebacongirl's deviantART gallery

Bitchin'!

My dad was the one who introduced me to them as a kid. He's pretty much the person behind my love of classic rock. Especially The Doors.

cool! :P
Vinyl is accually the first choise when I buy music. They're amazing in so many ways. And lets face it: it's soooo much sexier to play a vinyl record than to start your computer and open a playlist!!! >.<

@Aspinou- well....yes and no. I mean, the scratches can be a big drag....but I do like all the hisses and pops that are unique on each one. You can always recognize YOUR copy of an album by those....

but....the first time I bought a mp3 player and asked the guy how many songs I could fit in it and he shrugged and said 'couple hundred maybe?" I thought he was joking! Before that I was all mixtapes and walkmans to carry my music around. It IS handy to have so much music in smaller forms... but you can't have the full size album art without vinyl.

Ohh yeah I would die without my mp3 player! It's so handy to have all the music you like just wherever you go , I too remember the cd walkman. And now I also listen a lot to spotify, I mean: any music at anytime. Can it be any better?

The thing is that vinyls have facinated me since I was a kid and started to listen to music. My mom and dad had a lot of records and I loved to look at the covers and I could just not imagine how there could come music from that thing. xD I couldn't play them then because we didn't have a player. And later when I moved to a bigger city I loved going to recordstores and by LP's (or cd's for that matter) without really knowing what I had bought. XD
I buy new records too, they don't have scratches, at least not at first :p

Also it reminds me of when I first really got into music, before anyone knew what mp3's was and CD where king. It was almost a ritual thing for me to listen through the album while reading through the booklet and holding the cd cover in my hands...

Ha mix tapes were my LIFE in the 90's. As for digital music...I kind of need it. It'd be a pain in the ass to carry around 48gigs of music in anything but a large mp3 player.

I have a lot of vinyl and a record player that connects to my computer. I don't know why they went out of fashion -- the size made it a piece of art -- the picture, the title, the songs played in a certain order really gave artists a chance to speak the same way a novelist gets to speak to an audience. I think vinyls should have been like hardbacks, and MP3's like paperbacks...

I collect vinyl records, mostly from the 40s to the late 80s.
I have most of the beatles in mint along with the solo albums of Lennon, and Harrison. Followed by the yardbirds, the smiths, judy garland, black sab, and led zeppelin. which is probably my favorite group from the collection next to the ramones. I guess I mostly collect cause of the clear quality and the album covers.
Backwards masking still creeps me out though.

I know what you mean! That stuff used to really freak me out.

I started doing it to find all the 'Paul is dead' clues on the Beatles records, and then tried other ones because I heard there was 'satanick' stuff thereon. I don't know about the "devil" if it exists or not, but I always sort of felt like something was over my shoulder when I'd do it.

I don't think it's the backwards thing itself per se, as I've heard things reversed via four track and on editing programs. I think it's the changing pitch as you cannot turn a record at an even 33 by hand. Still. Spooky. :(

Ahh, yes. The Paul is dead theory has been brain washing me ever since I started collecting their albums. And then I found a documentary, well one of several had been made claiming it was George Harrison's last testament. A serious mind boggling documentary that talks about mi5 and the beatles before and after 1966.

Haha! Records = <3

My favorites are Rick Wakeman's (sp)Journey to the Center of the Earth and King Arthur (same guy), and Blue Oyster Cult's

Records just sound so much better to me... *sigh* if only I had a record player...

I saw him and his son Alan when they went on tour some years back. I always liked his work with Yes and The Strawbs, and my fave album of his was The Wives of Henry VIII

I haven't heard too much of his music, but I grew up with the 2 I mentioned. He also made LoTR Tribute music too.

Does he sing in any of his music? o.o Mostly I only hear talking.

He sang a bit on the Rock and Roll Prophet album. One of the funnest songs on that was called 'Do You Believe in Fairies'. I think they have it on grooveshark if you want to hear how his singing voice sounds.
