I'm probably like a lot of people when I say I love musicals like RENT, Wicked, Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera and Avenue Q, but are there any other less popular/obscure musicals worth noting? X3 I'm always looking for new music and Stage Music/Showtunes are ranked at the top for me.
Some of my favorites:
The Producers
Sweeney Todd
The Light in the Piazza
South Pacific
Guys and Dolls
Snoopy
The Scarlet Pimpernel
Once Upon A Mattress
A New Brain
Forbidden Broadway
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Wedding Singer
Miss Saigon
And so many others. XD;;

I love South Pacific. I didn't know it was a stage musical though, or that it was lesser known. I don't know, maybe it's just because I grew up watching it. xD
Phantom of the Opera is definitely a given, and I liked Lion King as well.

South Pacific isn't lesser known, but people don't really list it as a well known musical. Most people I talk to only know of Wicked and Phantom. >_>

Ah. That's odd. o.0 Well, maybe they haven't been exposed to many. I have a deep love for musicals. Even one called Lagaan, which is a Hindi one. Sure, I can't really understand it without the subtitles, but the story is great and the songs addictive. <3

Probably. ;_; It's surprisingly difficult to find any musical lovers where I live. Most of them only follow the trends and musicals they see in the movies. (Like RENT, Chicago, etc...) They never really want to give any other ones a chance unless it's in a movie version.
And you are so lucky to be able to see foreign musicals. :O I can never find any.

Oh, true. I usually don't like the "trendy" musicals though. Something much lesser known means so much more to me. I grew up listening to musicals and movies I loved used to entertain using songs. So I guess I just loved the music aspect of movies too much to let it go. xD
I've seen a few. Mostly spanish ones though I can't think of the names off the top of my head since it's been a while.

The trendy ones are okay, but they can be severely overrated and the fans tend to kill any love I have for them after awhile. >_> I'm pretty much the same as you. I grew up watching classic MGM musicals like Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris, Top Hat, and My Fair Lady, so musicals have always been the love of my life. xD

I honestly haven't seen a lot of musicals (so expensive!), but I've loved those that I've seen *3* <3 I thought "Beauty and the Beast" the musical was really nice. It's still one of my favorites XD I really liked "The Phantom of the Opera" as well.

I love "Spamalot". I saw it in the West End and it was so awesome. Nosebleed seats but whatev, so much fun and my cheeks hurt from laughing so hard.
I also really enjoy Chicago and Les Mis. I used to love Phantom (grew up listening to it on cassette) but Chicago is nice and gritty and Les Mis just makes me cry every time I see it live.
I also really like West Side Story. I love it how rival gangs can fight it each and still dance like crazy.

I can't remember if I've been to any stage musicals before, but I probably have and can't remember because I didn't like them too much. xD
But I'd love to go to some of the more famous ones. ^^
I've watched quite a few film productions of musicals though, and they're always fun. ^^

Wicked =D The end XD j/k~ Wicked is for sure one of my favorite musicals, but I really like 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee too =D Newer stuff and maybe lesser known...?*shrugs* I haven't really seen too many of the older/classic musicals...I did see Les Mis once and liked it, saw RENT, but didn't like it as much...I like the voices of the original cast more than the cast I ended up seeing. Once Upon a Mattress also has a special place in my heart since my HS put on a production of it and I was in it XD

I grew up watching the old technicolor musicals on TV...Oklahoma, The King & I, West Side Story, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, South Pacific, Brigadoon, Fiddler, etc. LOVED those things!
As for modern stage musicals, my favorites include Les Mis, Miss Saigon (which I wouldn't really count as obscure - I always thought it was rather well known), Jekyll & Hyde (though they changed a few things from the original version and I thought the original was better), Wicked, and Beauty & the Beast.

I've actually had the good fortune to go to a few stage productions, since I only live about an hour or so away from Boston, where just about every major show goes through. The first musical I ever saw was "Phantom of the Opera", and that was a trip sponsored through of of my high school clubs. Being in the drama club was a lot of fun, because we got to do fun stuff like that. And the fact that I got to see it with a bunch of my friends only made it better.
I also saw "Wicked" in Providence, and I liked it so much, I want to see it again in September, when it goes to Boston.
I'm thinking of going to see "RENT" in April, but I'm not positive about whether or not I'd be able to make that one, since I'd have to take a day off work to travel there. But it's a tempting thought.
As far as stuff I've just listened to, there's "Godspell", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Hello, Dolly!", "Annie", "Annie, Get Your Gun", Avenue Q", "Guys and Dolls", "South Pacific", "Kiss Me, Kate", and that list can go one for quite a long time. Those are just the ones I currently have on iTunes, as I keep looking for more soundtracks to add. xD

Bah, I like the trendy musicals. But I grew up listening to Phantom of the Opera, so that 'un holds a special place in my heart.
Spamalot was the funniest, though. I got to see it with the original cast, and it was delightful. David Hyde Pierce was amazing beyond all belief.
Producers was also great, and I also got to see it with the original cast. Nathan Lane cracked up on stage, and that was awesome.
I ALMOST got to see Lestat, but it was so bad they scrapped it. Pity. I wanted to stalk Hugh Panaro. But we got free tickets to Avenue Q instead, and it was great.
I never got/liked Wicked. I saw it, and it was just... meh. Only Broadway production I've never liked.
My favorite musical, though? BAT BOY!

I loved Phantom when I saw it a few years ago, but all the hype about the movie kind of spoilt it a bit ._.
Cats was very good too.
I really wish Chess was still running. I was given the soundtrack to it a few years ago and I love the songs. Even though a Musical about a chess competition may seem as exciting as watching paint dry o.o I'd still have liked to see it and put the music in context a little.
