Instruments.

So everyone what kind of instruments do each of you play? Do you play one or do you not? State your instrument when you started playing it and if you don't play one just say so. I play the piano/keyboard and just started few days ago.

I'm in my school's marching/symphonic band and I play the flute. I also know a little piano and violin ^^

- I play the flute, piccolo, bassoon and piano.
- In the symphonic band class, I play the bassoon. In Marching Band, I played the flute for the last two years, but this year I'm playing the piccolo. :3

Musical Craving!

Hey everyone!

Just here to have a little discussion, that's all. I got inspired by Orchestra class today, and the fact I was practicing my violin just a minute ago.

Anyway, do you play an instrument? If so what kind?

Discuss:
~ Different/favorite instruments
~ How long have you played
~ How long do you practice
~ Would you like to play an instrument, which one?
~ And if you do, what are the things you find difficult?

Have fun! I have to go! I'll be back!!!

Sindima 10-13-2009 11:25 PM

WEll I used to play the clarinet but the thing is- I can't read music. I can play music by ear. I played in 7th grade but I got fed up with my instructor, who wanted me out with the band practicing the music AND back in the recording room, recording scales (that I didn't know how to do.) So, I didn't get into it.

If I could play any instrument though I would love to play a Violin because you can make so many different types of sounds with it.
I also would like to play the flute because it also has a beautiful sound.

Music is my life, I don't know what I would do without music..

Lexta 10-13-2009 11:33 PM

I don't play an instrument, but I wish I did.
I love to play violin or harp. Or guitar or drums. Or flute.
Okay, I'm not sure what I'd like to play, but I've always wished I had some musical talent.
But I can't even read sheet music.

Riley_Dragonseeker 10-13-2009 11:44 PM

ok here I go.

I played the Violin in 4th, 5th and 6th grade. It was fun. My Orchestra Teachers name was Mrs. Smith. I liked reading the music and I can play mary had a little lamb without any music in front of me, I used to be able to play other songs but, when my dad left my violin in the back of the moving truck, i haven't played since. The hardest part for me was holding the bow and the finger manipulations, but I soon got the hang of it.

I was in Choir in 7th and 8th grade. I had a hard time trying to adjust my voice. I also had fun. My choir teachers name was Mrs. Stratford. I learned alot on how to warm up my voice and things and I also re learned how to read Notes. My Orchestra teacher came in and helped when Mrs. Stratford had to leave to have a baby. I improved over the month she was gone and she was happy. I didn't rejoin choir though.

And just recently I started to play the second bass drum, I had fun working with my instructors and the other members but alas I'm not going back this winter because the group is not the same and neither is the instructors.

I used to play the clarinet but its been years so I'd have to relearn everything. If only I could find my clarinet, got my aunts but that's in a need of re-corking of the separate pieces and re-padding of all the keys. So none of the notes sound right or on key, and half of them just sound like I'm blowing air out of a large bubble pipe without bubble solution.

I can kind of play the flute a little, don't really know any of the notes and get better sounds then my little sister who's currently learning because she HAS to suck in every note switch instead of on the breaks like I was taught. Tried teaching her that and she said I was wrong :<. Makes me feel like music is really dying in public schools, how to properly breath was taught to me before any notes wtf.

The most difficult thing I found with playing an instrument was in school. The band teachers can be quite a bit two faced. Telling the students one thing and then the parents another in order to keep kids they down talk from quitting.

The Cheshire Cat 10-14-2009 12:18 AM

Well, I started playing the violin is sixth grade, but only for a few months or so. Then in seventh grade I took the course for real, and it was okay. We got a new teacher, and she was NOT my favorite. In fact, I suppose we hated each other. Not because of me talking back or anything, it was just one of those things, I guess. She was Korean and I had trouble understanding her and whatnot. Oh well. Had her in 8th grade too. She got worse, I think, and it sorta killed my spirit in playing an instrument.

Needless to say, I skipped playing again in 9th grade and then heard another school play one of their concerts. They weren't the best and I CRAVED my violin! Oh, how I wanted to just run my bow across the strings. SO, I joined again this year and at first I was iffy, but I'm better than ever before and LOVE IT!

The problems I have are shifting and vibrato. I'm actually getting better at everything else once I practice it a couple times. Even sight reading is better. Let's just say, my new teacher is passionate about her job and care more about teaching music than you liking her. She can be rough around the edges sometimes, but I've seen her nice side. So, all in all, I'm really enjoying myself now. ^^

I played Piano for 5 years, but quit since all my siblings decided to leave, which sucked, since I miss it now, though I hated practicing! I also played violin for one year, until my strings teacher broke it D; and now I'm learning how to play the guitar by teaching myself.

Problem is, I'm tone-deaf xD can't really self tune.

madamelsie 10-14-2009 01:13 AM

i used to play the piano and alto saxophone. i guess i still practice the piano on a very rare occasion, but i don't even have a saxophone anymore so i never work on that. i'm a huge fan of music and orchestras, etc., and think anyone who has the talent to play a musical instrument is amazing. i don't really consider myself talented when it comes to playing music. i leave that to the professionals and try to support them as much as possible by buying CDs and attending concerts and stuff. i think if i could go back and learn a new instrument it would definitely be the french horn. it has the most amazing sound. love it.

The Cheshire Cat 10-14-2009 01:20 AM

Wow. I would love to try the guitar, or piano. I can read music, but haven't ever had the chance to practice or really learn for those particular instruments. I may be getting a keyboard from my friend, so you best believe I'll be watching all kinds of you tube "how to play piano" videos. XD

My teacher got some Orchestra grad students to come preform for us one day and they were simply amazing! There was only two violins, one cello, and one viola, but the whole class was in AWE! I simply LOVED IT!

I should really start listening to classical music more. But I just find it so much more enjoyable when your in the same room, watching and listening as others play. Being a person who knows how to play an instrument, I think it's really helped me come to appreciate the professionals and treat them with serious respect.

Titenya 10-14-2009 01:48 AM

I have played a number of instruments in school and on my own... I started playing Piano when I was about 6, and when I was 9 we had band in school so I started playing trumpet. From there I learned to play the bass and French horns, then the clarinet, bass and alto clarinet. I learned to play the drums, String Bass, Bass guitar, and to conduct as well ^^

Rhayne 10-14-2009 02:23 AM

I sing and play piano, and I'm learning guitar. I wanted to learn the violin for a long time, but my school never offered it to us, so I gave up. Then the year after I left, they offered it. -_-; Now I'm not too interested in the violin; still love it, but don't really wanna play.
I haven't played piano in a long time; I've been focusing on my singing, and also trying to learn guitar. XD

Darkestofsouls 10-14-2009 03:58 AM

I learned to play piano when I was in Middle School, and then stopped learning it to learn (and play in my church's) bell choir till early High School. Now, I don't really play anything, but I have been thinking about learning the Violin. I love the sound of a violin over any other instrument (and I love bands that use them).

BladeChild7 10-14-2009 04:11 AM

I just started Piano a few weeks ago. I've played Violin for about 1/2 a year before quitting, I've played Flute for 2 1/2 years before quitting and I've been in choir for 6 years (6th grade up until I graduated High School last year since I couldn't afford to take it in college this semester).
