classic psychedelia anyone?

if you don't know what i'm talking about, read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychedelia

if you do, share your favourite songs/bands and tell us what/who got you into this kind music :)

my favourites are jefferson airplane, strawberry alarm clock, the doors and the beatles (although some people argue if the last 2 belong in this category). i don't really remember what got me hooked but everything probably started from the doors <3

i must also say i am aware of the fact this thread will probably die because i don't think mene has users who actually remember the times of woodstock, and sadly most of teenagers listens only to modern music, but hey, we'll see.

share your favs and discuss everything. as long as it's not off topic :P

i knew this thread would die but i was hoping for at least few posts :(

This thread is doomed, you're right, but it's a real pity.

People of today should learn to appreciate the masterpiece psychedelia really is.
Pink Floyd, King Crimson... true masters of music, but sadly enough, not enjoyed to their full extent by the youth of today... if only they understood the importance and brilliance that is psychedelia.
ironically enough, I think it would clear their minds and make them all smarter, more opinionated and strong. music has an amazing effect on people, and especially that of good quality (which we see too little of today)
You don't mess with Pink Floyd, and you don't mess with good music, you appreciate it and learn from it. and you definitely do not make half-bad remixes of it (can anyone guess what I am referring to?)

(I'm very tired, my writing style says a lot about that... might edit later, must sleep now... Zzzzz)

so true :( when i got into the music, i wanted to know more about the times, in general, because of the effect things happening around have on the music, art in general, of a certain period. and, believe it or not, i got more open-minded, and a tad stronger too, i think, because i stopped being afraid of showing and expressing my views or preferences.

even though recently i don't listen to it as much as i used to, i still think it was psychedelia that changed me the most, and hoepfully for the best :)

and omg, i can't believe someone actually posted here XD *glomps you*

...unless some desperate n00b raises it one more time.

I'm more a fan of prog rock and garage than psychedelia, altho the lines tend to blur since all that music was so long ago.

When I was in my phase of trying to discover old old bands to listen to I used to listen to all the classic ones, as well as trying to dig up harder to find stuff like Thunder and Roses, Hawkwind, and all those bands that later got pulled together for the Nuggets boxsets.

I guess I don't like psychedelic as much tho because well, I think you were supposed to be on some kind of substances to get the full effect of it. A lot of it sounds too redundant, and due to the recording techniques they had back then kind of ... thin? I guess? Psychedelic was usually 'weaker' somehow, than regular rock.

....and then there was Jimi.

I'm surprised he was left off the classic list. That guy did things with a guitar no one has been able to keep up with or replicate.

Vixy appreciate the desperate n00b's efforts ;)

Now, I definitely love me some Doors, King Crimson, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
I also appreciate some of the newer progressive rock/metal bands, namely Mastodon, Giant Squid, and Ghost Brigade.

It's always fun when music can take you on a journey.

Owsley passed away, BTW. I just saw this on facebook. :(

Aspinou 03-14-2011 08:07 PM

I used to be seriously down to psychadelica and garage, both the more obscure and the softer ones. I still claim that Love is and will always be the best band ever existed!
I also love Doors, Zombies, King Crimson, 13th Floor Elevators, Jefferson Airplane, etc. Just to mention a few.

And I also listen a lot to the newer scene, such as TSOOL, Dungen, Syket, Caesars and more....

I'm only 20 though so I don't really remember anything of that, but at least I'm still incredibly happy that I've seen Roky Erickson live :D

Love are- were- pretty damn cool. I liked Arthur Lee's touring band from before he died, Baby Lemonade, also.

Spirit are wicked cool, do you know them? and because I am a fan of Hendrix I'm pretty fond of Funkadelic. Eddie Hazel is my second fave geetarist.

No I don't know them (I am looking them up now though :)
I listened a lot to Hendrix during my "guitarr rock period", I loved how I so easily forgot everything else but the music when I listened to him.

Explodey 03-16-2011 09:05 AM

A super good song of Funkadelic's that shows off Hazel's mad skills is 'Maggot Brain'.

BurningCrusade 03-16-2011 05:38 PM

I'm one of those awkward people, I hate most mainstream music of today XD.

Psychadelic wise, I really love The Beatles and Pink Floyd.

The Wall is really a well crafted masterpeice, my personal favourite is Young Lust off that album.

With The Beatles, I have a ton of favourites: Back in the USSR, Octopus' Garden, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, We Are the Walrus, and Yellow Submarine.

The Beatles are awesome XD.

Projectwolfie 03-16-2011 10:24 PM

Yes, I love my Moody Blues, Pink Floyd sometimes, a bit of Gong or Cammel, King Chrimson...

Also early psychedelic styled Doom, like Black Sabbath or for today, Blood Ceremony.

Explodey 03-18-2011 02:57 PM

Ooh, Gong! How could I forget them?

Some DJ we used to like to call turned me & my friend Anni on to the album 'You'. It was all fun times from there.
