What kind of alternative? I know this is kind of a silly question, but to me there are
lots of alternatives to rock still within the genre. xD

@Elliptical- Alt rock is indeed a pretty large genre, and not particularly well-defined, since it refers at times to a sound and at times to a specific time period (usually 90s rock in general, strangely), and many artists reject the label anyway, so it's subjective. Like most genre distinctions, lol.

I tend to define alt rock in terms of sound and influences. I grew up on the mainstream alt rock of the late eighties and nineties, so I'm a big fan. Later I started liking a lot of goth rock, which is apparently considered part of alt rock, too. I still listen to a lot of bands that are considered alt rock.

Purple, since you posted this topic, I'm curious to know which bands define the genre to you. I always think of R.E.M. for some reason. And Nirvana, because my whole family listened to them.
