Okay. Surely it's not just me that's noticed Miley Cyrus has been covering a lot of songs that are just -not- Disney-Teeny-Bopper style. For example 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana. She is not grunge. She is nothing close to grunge. She will never be grunge. She absolutely murdered that song. Not content with killing Nirvana, she moved onto Joan Jett and covered 'I Love Rock And Roll' and 'Bad Reputation'.

If you're a Disney star that gets washed-up country singer/father Billy-Ray to write songs for you, you will never be able to pull off those songs. Especially when her original songs are the likes of 'Party In The USA' and 'Hoe-Down Throw-Down'

Is it just me that hates Miley covering songs that are nothing close to the genre she is supposed to represent? (Let's pretend that I don't love Slipknot's cover of 'Barbie Girl' okay?)

I'm not a fan personally - but when I see bands doing cover songs, I image its because the band themselves like the song, or have a great respect for the musician(s) who wrote and originally played it.

And, as well.. If music is your thing, as you get older - you're going to want to get away from the disney-bubblegum-popsongs. Shes either just trying to expand herself musically, or expand her fan base. I can't really blame her for either - because when something you love becomes a chore it just ruins it for you!

That being said, I tend to stick to original versions of songs regardless - covers tend to throw me off a bit. Though, I'd be interested to see what her next original album will sound like after shes done these songs... x3

Just googled punk Miley for some lulz... It scared me instead. x(

No..just no. If it does not suit your voice do not sing it! It's not so much the style of music but the fact that she tries to cover songs she just does not have the voice for.

I stay away from covers for the most part because I write music to fit my voice and it's more fun anyway.

I think her voice could match that type of music, if she got enough practice. As Repo said, she's getting older, and her taste in music has probably expanded. I don't love teeny bopper disney songs now, but I did when I was a kid. If she wants to try it, why the hell not? Who are we to tell her to limit her creativity?

I do agree that she should choose the songs to match her voice, but as far as the genre goes, you have to put yourself in her position. 5 years ago I would have loved to sing her up-beat pop songs, songs I now wouldn't even listen to if you paid me. I imagine she's tired of people saying she isn't 'supposed' to cover this grunge type of music. I don't enjoy her songs either, but she's probably like "Screw it, I'm singing what I want to." It's not like we have to listen to it.

On another note... OH MY GOD Slipknot covered barbie girl? And I'm just now hearing about this!?

I would suppose she is trying to move on from the Disney days and prove that she is not a kids' singer anymore. Kind of like what Britney Spears did, right? I definitely won't be listening to those covers myself of course, just wanted to say that it's probably not her "genre" that makes her grunge covers bad.

I may not like her music, but who cares if she does covers for songs? I think it can be kind of cool when a traditionally rock song, for example, is turned into lounge music like what Richard Cheese does.

Example below! (Language warning! Swear words! NSFW! Don't listen to around Grandma!)

Tada!

You don't have to listen to it. And who CARES if she isn't "grunge"? And if anyone told me I couldn't be part of the metal scene because I don't wear all black and scream, I'd slap them around. (I wear pretty flowery dresses and have a fairy princess room, just to give you an idea.)

More power to her. I may not like her music, but let her be creative in whatever way she wants.

Well according to Pop Up Video, she doesn't even like pop music, she only did pop as a way to help advertise her clothing line at Walmart, so that could have something to do with why she is going outside of the genre. But I agree that her covers are awful (then again, I don't like any of her music).

I actually like a lot of covers by bands that switch up the genre. Especially when hard rock bands turn pop songs into hard rock lol. For example You Spin Me Round by Dope is one of my favorites. Also love London Bridges by Bowling For Soup (I think this one may only be on Youtube).

It probably would have been more interesting if Miley had tried to do Smells Like Teen Spirit in her own style of music.
I mean, it would probably have still been awful, but maybe a little better? lol

I don't mind covers if it makes sense for the person to do it. If they cover songs within their vocal ranges and they don't cold-blooded-murder the song, then hey have fun. But as soon as they ruin the song it's like GTFO now. Don't turn my metal into opera.

That being said, I'm just not a Miley fan... never have been. Probably never will be. Her voice just urks me.
