Ok so the other day I'm at work, folding towels, humming to myself. This girl I work with walks up to me and asks me what I'm singing. I tell her its Elton John's "Sorry seems to be the hardest word." And that it had been stuck in my head all week.
She turns to me....and says "Oh gawd....I'm sooooo sorry"
I think at that point I just shook my head and walked away. I mean come on....sure the guy is totally off his rocker but the man is a musical genius.....Of course this came from the same girl who once asked me who the "beatles" where so....yeah......
Anyways....anything like this ever happen to you?

Maybe she's sorry because it seems to be the hardest word? Trolololo bad joke. Just had to. But no, it doesn't usually happen to me. Well, once a guy on the Metro stared at my phone, then back to me, then back at my phone, then back to me, with the strangest expression ever. In his defense, I had a half-naked Eminem as my phone's screensaver. I guess people look at my innocent face and just can't compute.

I guess I still don't get it. Was she 'sorry' because she thought you didn't want Elton John in your head (as in, she thought his music bad?) or... was she sorry about the idea of Elton John in general?
I always found it kinda sad when musical icons lose their human-ness in people's eyes and become larger than life, me. Like the way so many people think of John Lennon as just this generic peaceful hippy dude. Lennon was never all that 'peaceful' for someone who wrote a lot of songs about love and peace. He was very radical and politicised when he was in his "hippy" phase (altho apparently none of the Beatles liked the hippy movement much; drug-takin' 60s kids in England were very different than the San Francisco variety), and had been a violent little teddyboy as a young man. Even in his old age he was always a snarky opinionated fellow, and that to me is what I liked about him.
I'm not sure what people think of Elton John. That his music is sort of 'easy listening' to today's generation is a given; recording techniques of the 70s differed tremendously from today's and I don't think any band had quite the hard sound in the studios then that they must have had live. I know a lot of people gave the guy grief for coming out as gay, but he was one of the first to un-closet himself, so he deserves some props.

I think it was more of the fact that she thought he was bad in general based on her tone.
For me, its not really about the people behind the music. I mean yes its interesting to know. And take for instance the fact that Elton John is gay.....I could care less either way. Does it deter from the fact that he has an amazing gift for musical talent, absolutely not. Very few people in this country have not heard an elton john song....many of them probably don't even know they heard it. Its just.....that kind of music.
I would also say similar things about John Lennon. Weather he was a violent radical or a peaceful hippy really doesn't matter if you look souly at his musical genius.
Someone shouldn't be sorry over a song which is both lyrically and musically amazing. I guess that is the point I was trying to make.

Oh jeez, I know many of those girls. But it's probably my own fault as well since I dig my own hole of misunderstood artists. I really don't see how someone doesn't know who the Beatles are. Unless they've really been put off into a whole generation of music...it's remarkable. Tragic as well. I think it was yesterday were I was explaining to my friend about my research paper that had to do with John Lennon. "Who's John Lennon?" "..Moose, you're wearing a Beatle shirt...he's one of the Beatles..I should shoot you." But ehh, I can't always have my way. >:/ So, I clearly understand your situation..xD I always pick the best people to talk to about music, it seems.

Oh yes. Those types. I know at least one: she's wearing a Ozzy shirt but then asks 'what's this' when I put on a Sabbath record. The even funnier ones are the ones who know literally nothing about the music they purport to like- "I like Alice Cooper, she's really good!" *L*

I had someone say that they like Alice Cooper because "she" is good too! XD I was like "right then". When I worked at the radio station, I used to get people trying to talk to me about music all the time just because I'd give things out as promotional items. XD It's funny what people will say sometimes.

That is all so funny! But , sadly I meet people all the time who have no idea... Could it be because I spend so much time with 7 year olds?
Anyway, Carzeebear and her wee brother have been forced to listen to the Beatles, Queen, the Eagles and Abba because it is my job as a parent to educate them in the way of good music :D They can also quote Monty Python and Billy Connolly for the same cultural reasons. My Mum used to watch the Beatles when she was a teenager, in Liverpool, before they were famous. I grew up listening to them, Queen's Night at the Opera and Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells because they were the only "cool" albums my parents had. Seriously. The rest were Shirley Bassey, Jazz quartets and classical stuff.
Carzeebear has just admitted to ignorance of Elton John's songs so more education is coming up.... ;)

Luckily, I'm fond of both. Carzee's mum- check out Park Mi Kyung's take on the old Donna Summers' classic- Hot Stuff.
Carzee- This guy was visual kei when Gackt was still in diapers. Sir E on 'Soul Train'.

Lady Gaga's kind of misunderstood in the opposite direction of what everyone of this topic imo. What is percieved as "deep" or "artistic" is normally just copycatting off of Madona. Even moreso in her music today.
Linkin Park honestly gets a really bad rap to be "music for baaaaaaw" because of CRAAAAAWWWWWWLLLLLLINNNNNG IN MY SKIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN. when really, from what I'm told by someone who asked them directly Crawling is about drug abuse and not cutcutslitslitemo. But then after that they just preceded to milk it... and milk it... although it was mostly marketing's fault. But then there was the new album which blows (honestly, their old stuff was good, this just tries to be relavent again and fails). So even though it's misunderstood, it's slightly deserving in a way because they just went with it.

Well one time my phone went off in school when I turned it on (a couple minutes before school was out) and my ringtone for texting was Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone. It went off and some guys looked at me like "woooowww so lame" But i don't think that's because they misunderstand O-zone, it's just a weird band as it is = u = But i think some people misunderstand music of other languages in general. If it's not English it sucks. Which is a sad thing to believe...
