Is it not just absolutely amazing? x3

I'm convinced that it's the greatest musical ever, even if it's totally disloyal to the book it's based on. (The book "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maquire is amazing as well. The book is more meant for adults and it lacks the lighthearted take that the musical has.)

I'm going to see Wicked in March on Broadway on a field trip with my school choir. I'm sad that I never saw the original cast with Idina Menzel (starring as Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West)and Kristen Chenowith (as Glinda the Good Witch of the North), but I hear that the current Elphaba (Stephanie J. Block) is pretty good. x333 I'm so excited!

My favorite songs are "No Good Deed," "No One Mourns the Wicked," "Popular," and "One Short Day".

Who else loves Wicked, and what are your favorite songs?

@Jenn_heart - x3 "For Good" and "Defying Gravity" are amazing songs. <3 I love them! D: I guess I must live under a rock too. >.< I've only ever heard the songs...

@katyasha - D: I've never actually seen Wicked yet, but I have bought the CD, read the book, and read several summaries, and longingly stared at wicked merchandise...but never have I heard of a fight scene between the two... ^^; Are you referring to the song 'What Is This Feeling' in which Glinda and Elphaba are singing about how much they loathe each other right when they find out they're roommates at Shiz University? >.< I must be missing something. Probably because I don't know the entire story line...

@katyasha - Ohhh...I get it now. :3 That's when Glinda and Elphie both like Fiyero. It would have been cute if they made a song out of it. x333

I've never see it, but I've read the book and I know all the music. xD I think my favourite song is Dancing Through Life... it's so good~

I play viola in a youth orchestra thing, and we just got a new song, which is an arrangement of a whole bunch of Wicked songs O: It's really fun! I don't have it with me at the moment, but I remember it having... No-One Mourns the Wicked, The Wizard and I, Defying Gravity, Dancing Through Life, and... maybe a couple more, not necessarily in that order.

We actually even get the melody occasionally, which just intensifies my love for Wicked like, tenfold. >B

@murron - I love Popular! x33333 Wicked = <3

@TheSatah - I love Dancing Through Life! (Although I prefer the West End version over Broadway. >.< I like Adam Garcia's voice alot more than Norbert's...)

O: Yay for orchestra music! x3

x3 I don't have orchestra, but with the few music groups I've been in yet, the melody's always better than the harmony...so...YAY! x3

x33333 I luffs No One Mourns the Wicked... <333

I read the book and watched the musical for Wicked :3
I liked a bunch of the songs in the musical, quite a few being funny such as "Popular" but the thing I don't like about the musical is, the story is about Elphaba's life being sad and stuff like that, and yet, it ends semi-happy. I would say happy but Elphaba will never see Glinda again so I'll just say it was semi-happy. Overall the story is great and I enjoyed reading/watching both book and musical.

I've seen this show well over 200 times (not a typo... my fiance worked there and I knew people in the show so I got discounts and such)

Anyways is such an amazing show. Its put together so well musically and story wise. The costumes are incredible and the story blends in so well with the Wizard of Oz movie that we all know and love =). I love this show!

My gosh. I've never seen the muscial, but I not too long ago heard the song 'Loathing/What is this Feeling" and I fell in love. I went around the house singing it for quite a while.
And, I've actually become interested in the muscial because of it.

Saw it early this year with the touring cast. I was completely in awe, and I really want to see it again. It's just an amazing thing to watch, and it was especially cool talking to some of the cast members afterward.

Semi-necro? I just had to comment and didn't think making an entire new thread was appropraite.

Wicked is one of the greatest pieces of contemporary music. The unique chord progressions and little plays on arranging them are absolutely stunning and spine-tingling good. My favorites are:

"No Good Deed". The bass progession of I, minor iii, raised VI, ii, is like, the most amazing thing I've ever heard, ever. And Elphaba's soaring voice over all of it sends shivers down my spine, especially at the second refrain, I think it is.

"As Long As You're Mine". What I like about Elphaba and Fiyero's love song is that it's so distinctly different from the usual love songs. For one, it starts out with the theme from "No One Mourns the Wicked", and since that's in a minor key, it makes the love song seem sad, but it's not. And the unusual lyrics that don't focus on how much they love each other and other love-dovey overdone lyrics is a neat touch.

"Defying Gravity". An all-time favorite. The duet near the middle, and Elphaba's sad realization that she's going solo is really touching.

"Thank Goodness". Glinda is as funny as ever, but it's so heartbreakingly touching to hear how she's struggling with abonding Elphaba but trying to forget about her because she has the happy ending she's always wanted. My absolutely favorite part is, "With this perfect finale, the cheers in the valley who, who, wouldn't be happier...so. I couldn't be happier". That lone "so" always has me bursting into applause the way she sings it on the soundtrack.

"For Good". The best thing about "For Good" is the switching of Elphaba to soprano and Glinda to alto. I didn't even realize the switching of parts until my second or third listen of it. Very nice touch on emphasizing how the two friends have affected one another.

I do have to say, I'm dissapointed with how black and white the musical is in comparison to the book. I know I know, that the book is so full of grey areas and plot that it would be pretty impossible to put it into a musical firstly, and for the audience to understand it secondly, since the book is a pretty hard read, at least for me. Still, what I love about the book is the questions it raises about good and evil, and the humanity of both. In the musical, Elphaba is so clearly the heroine, and she is the one that is so clearly wronged. So instead of showing how human Elphaba is like the book does, it just shows the good, can-do-no-wrong hero figure who has been misunderstood and abused. The book lets the reader decide if Elphaba really is evil, if she was born evil, or if she lived her life to the best of her morals and abilities.

Personally, I think Elphaba is pretty evil in the novel, but in the way all humans are, and not like the Wicked Witch of the West.

I should probably move this to the Books forum. Oh me oh my.

I absolutely love Wicked...XD In my freshman year our Marching Band show was Wicked, and it was so much fun. The flag girls twirled brooms and our Drum Majors Dressed up like Galinda and Elphaba. XD We thought it was amazing, our show wasn't as good as we thought it was though, lol. But it was still a lot of fun to do. This was around the time Wicked was becoming popular and 'known' which was exciting, most people didn't know what our show was about at first. :)

Then for our band trip that year we went to New York and got to see Wicked on Broadway! So exciting!!! Then the following year I went on a trip to Europe and I got to see it preformed in London! The differences were rather amusing, the one in London was more...um... pop/rock like I guess you could say, and had tons of green lights for the Emerald City part. They were both really good though.

It kinda bothered me that it didn't follow the book, but then again it is kinda expected. I really enjoyed both the book and the two musicals I saw though, it really was very inventive to show the story from the 'evil' one's point of view, making her seem less evil. It also brought up many good points on what evil truly is, or what is truly evil....

I love this musical too! I think that it is really nice. I haven't gotten to see it, but I know a lot of the songs. I love "Defying Gravity" and "dancing through life" and "for good" I love the costumes and the general theme. It is the only musical/play/movie I have seen that deviates from the book so much but is soo awsome! Ok I lied Phantom of the Opera is the same way but it needed music to make it complete. I was able to see the costumes through an interveiw with the costume designer including a backstage tour!

It's amazing. It really is.

I'm rooting for them to ask Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth to reprise their rolls. To me, they are the only true Elphaba and Glinda.
