Well since I'm not sure what artists you know of/listen to, here are some groups and artists that I like:

well I ADORE Utada Hikaru's music i hope thts a bit of a guideline fro you cause i just don't really know any other J-Pop artist (except fro some anime music) so i realy like her stle^^

Oh! A note about Tohoshinki. They're actually a Korean group named Dong Bang Shin Gi (all of the songs that I recommended are in Japanese), Tohoshinki is what they release music under in Japan. So if you like their Japanese stuff, you should definitely check out their Korean releases!

Glay is a rock band, but sometimes they have really nice softer songs. And Teru's voice is beautiful!

I'll go ahead and be one of the mass to say that Utada Hikaru is really good. See-saw does a lot of anime music, and I think their stuff's great, too. ^.^

BoA, who Sungie mentioned, is also Korean, though she has tons of stuff out in English and Japanese, too. And she's great, and so so cute!

My Japanese friend was quite fond of Mr Children, and I think I liked what I heard, so you might want to check him out, too. And definitely Glay, yes! ^.^ I agree completely with Raziel~
