It was just past noon, the light from the sun did not trickle through the windows. Inside the house was cool, nearly empty with a single occupant. The young woman sat anxiously on the edge of her bed, her cell phone pressed against her ear as she chewed nervously on her lower lip. Her right foot stretched out with her heel pressed firmly into the floor, her foot shaking impatiently. After about forty seconds, she hung up, hit ‘re-dial’ on her phone and repeated the waiting process for the next five minutes. Exasperatedly, she tossed the phone on her bed and laid down with her arms spread open. The ceiling was blank, the room was silent, even the beating of her heart wasn’t loud enough to fill her ears. And as the silence had just about become unbearable, the cell phone vibrated, the young woman sat up quickly, snatching up the phone from her sheets. “Hello? Dhani?” Her voice was filled with excitement and joy. Her teeth sunk into her lower lip once more as the person on the other end responded.

“Sorry I didn’t pick up before, Kira. What’s up?” Dhani asked. Kira paused, taking in a slow deep breath before replying to the person on the other end of the phone.
“You’re still coming to visit, right? Well… I’ve got a sur—“
“Kira, about that…” Dhani interrupted her quickly, his voice wasn’t completely filled with uncertainty, but enough to cause the giddy girl to slouch, her free hand gripping the sheets, afraid to hear what he was about to say.
“Something the matter? We’ve been planning this for two months… Are you not coming to see me?” Her voice hid the fear that grew within her. Her expression was blank, unable to grasp the words that slowly flowed from the other end.
“It’s just… My girlfriend surprised me with concert tickets, and it’s one of those once in a lifetime sort of deals… I’m sorry…” Dhani waited for his friend’s response, a slight pause settled in the conversation as the words sunk deep into Kira.
“N-No… don’t be… “ She smiled, despite the tears that began to slide down her cheeks. “I understand… we can always try again some other time…” Her voice almost cracked, but she tried her best to not let the guy on the other end hear just the impact he left on her.
“Really? I knew you’d understand! You’re really an amazing friend. I promise that I’ll come see you soon. I have to go now, talk to you online!” He hung up.

Kira sat with the phone pressed against her ear, her body unable to respond or react to her feelings. She had known Dhani since middle school and the two had grown up as neighbors. He went off to college in another state, and despite being home during vacations, they always seemed to miss each other. And like most girls, Kira was in love with her best friend, so when she heard about his girlfriend, she had been devastated, hoping that she could sit and wait for him to return with the realization that she was the girl that he had been wanting all along. And the one time she was going to be free and he was thinking of returning for the weekend, he picked his girlfriend and her gift over seeing his best friend…

The phone dropped, bouncing against the sheets, her hands cupped her face as her body trembled. She restrained her sad emotions as best she could while wiping the drops of liquid from her face with her fingers. She knew that no matter how sad she got, in the end, it didn’t matter. She wiped her eyes once more with her forearm before standing up off her bed. She walked calmly to her full body mirror, examining her looks. Dhani, when telling her about his girlfriend when they first hooked up told her that she was a Pageant type girl. Kira never found herself to be amazing, but her self-esteem dropped, wondering if he liked girls as pretty as a Miss United States competitor. Her dark brown hair was tied back into a ponytail, revealing her slender neck, and a good deal of her face. Kira had an average build, but was more in shape than most girls being an avid runner and swimmer. She had striking green eyes and light, olive colored skin, the two contrasted giving her a foreign look. Her friends encouraged her, repeatedly telling her that if she wanted to, she could be Miss World or Miss Universe.

She examined her profile, patting her stomach boredly as she exhaled through her mouth. She didn’t feel like calling anyone, but being home alone only made her feel worse. She reached over to a chair by her desk, picking up a jacket. It was decently warm out still, but when night fell the temperature always dropped. She decided that a walk would help clear her head and prevent her from curling up on her bed with the lights off and curtains shut, listening to the same sad song on loop until she fell asleep.

((To be continued~))
