So... I've come up with a story idea that I REALLY like and I think it's something that hasn't been done all that much if at all. I don't want to give too much away yet, but I will be asking for some critques fairly soon. ^_^

The question for today is:

Do you think the name "Nova" is catchy for a main character (female).

I think it's spunky and fits with her personality (and I AM aware that it really doesn't mean "chasing butterflies"), but I'm not sure how well it'll be recieved. I was considering calling her "Boss" quite a lot as well (nickname is Boss like in "bossanova" lol and it reflects her pushy personality). So what do you think?

Nova?
Ashley Nova (surname)?

Or scrap it? Any feedback is appreciated! ^_^

I really like it as a first name, as long as your story isn't set in the past. It's different enough for your character to stand out, but not so odd that it sounds like you're trying too hard. I say go with it!

It's... decent. Reminds me of those old cars... My dad used to have one... *rambles on for fifteen minutes*
I think it's a good surname, but, I personally think that people who give their character real names (meaning, if they had a birth certificate, that's what it would say) that are... out there, seriously need... something. Not quite sure if help is the word, but I think you understand where I'm going.
I'd honestly rather see a book series where the characters are "Emily" and "John" rather than "Reign Beau" and "Cash".

I like unique names it makes the character more memorable i think. I like the name Nova too.

Nova reminds me of the last stage of a star (wow that sounds really geeky...) where it blows up in a spectacular fashion. I think it would be fitting for a character who was beautiful and definitely had a personality of her own. Someone who knows what they want and how to get it.

I like it as a first name best.

I don't like the name Nova, unless you're doing something futuristic or fantasy. I think it would be really great if you found a regular name that the character herself makes impressionable! The girl's personality should carry the name, not the other way around. Good luck!

I like the name and think it fits the personality you are going for. It sounds better as a first name to me, perhaps with an common surname.

Usually when I hear Nova I think of either Northern Virginia (where I'm from -- NoVa is the abbreviation for it, and also the abbreviation for our community college), or stars. However, one of my best friends has a friend they call Nova. I can't remember how the nickname came about, but her actual name is Sam. Have you considered Nova being a nickname rather than a given name? Sometimes nicknames say more about a person than their given name.

Right when I saw the word 'Nova' I immediatly thought 'Casanova'! But that's just me . . . :)

But I really love the name Nova. It's simple, unique and beautiful. My favorite. And it's perfect for a 'spunky' girl, as you said yourself. ;)

I like the name Nova as well. But I like it better as a first name than a surname.

I like the name! It sounds like there's a lot of energy in this character.
I agree with Twethereal, use it as her first name.

I like it. The genre does matter, though -- it would work well in, for example, a film noir-style mystery, or an urban fantasy story, or a sci-fi story. It wouldn't work so well in a romance, or historical fiction, or a swords-and-sorcery fantasy. If it fits the mood and genre of the story, though, go for it!
