Dragyn Prince

- Another story that I've been working on for awhile. It's quite long, so I'll be posting it in installments.

Dragyn Prince

The young girl’s eyes were a clear blue.

As much as the servants of the Dragyn King were around a blue-eyed woman they should have been used to it. However, these eyes still unnerved and intimidated them. The girl was aware of this, but she knew this inborn awe of eyes the color of the sky was because blue eyes were holy. She had lived all her life being both feared and revered by the people of the kingdom because of the random hand of Fate.

“Bring her forward,” the woman snarled. This, the servants were used to. One of the female servants brought the girl-child toward the throne.

The woman stared down at the girl with a critical eye. The child’s skin was as pale as the woman’s, but her scales were a wine red. In contrast to her crimson scales her elaborately styled hair was a bright ivory. “What is your name?”

For the first time in her life, the girl felt insulted. She frowned and raised her chin. “I am called S’yelian.”

“S’yelian, eh? I was called Tihil before I came here,” the woman said as she rose from her throne. “Come along then. Let us meet your Prince.”

S’yelian followed the woman as she went through a doorway to the left of the throne. The chamber they entered was done in reds and golds with a high ceiling. The walls were decorated with tapestries that had to be centuries old, and all of them featured stories of the kings past. In the center was a pile of cushions of different sizes, shapes, and colors. Reclining on them was a human-sized dragon. It lifted its head and stared at them with curiosity.

“Meet your prince, S’yelian,” the woman said, a slight snarl tingeing her voice.

The Dragyn Prince stood up on his four powerful legs and moved toward them. He was a red color with speckles of white and black along his back. His eyes were sky-blue and set high on his feline skull. A mane of stiff spines ringed his head. He stood over S’yelian and cocked his head at her.

“You are a blue-eyed Kyn,” he murmured. The wonder in his voice puzzled S’yelian.

The woman unobtrusively dismissed the servants and went to stand by the doorway. The Dragyn Prince sat on his haunches beside the girl. She realized that his body was also very feline in shape. “What is your name?” he asked.

“S’yelian,” she answered. “What is yours?”

“Aelics, but I am called Prince,” he answered gravely.

S’yelian decided that she liked his voice. It was a tenor voice, but it rumbled through his barrel chest and reverberated making it seem larger than it was. “Only the High Priestess called me S’yelian. Everyone else called me Holy One.”

Aelics smiled. It was strange seeing a dragon smile. “Now you will be called Princess.”

S’yelian sat down beside him. “I’m not sure I want to be Princess.”

Aelics rose and circled her with his long body. He laid down and laid his head in her lap. S’yelian patted his spines. “It’s not because I don’t like you. I just don’t want to be holy any more.”

He looked up at her. His blue, slitted eyes were faintly pleading. “Is holiness so bad?”

She laughed harshly. “Holiness is just another word for fear. I’m sick of being feared.”

Aelics nudged her chest. “You are holy to me and I don’t fear you.”

S’yelian hugged his head to her breast. “Thank you.”

The woman stepped forward. It was time to end their meeting. “It is time for you to leave Princess.”

S’yelian rose and turned to follow. When she got to the door, she stopped. She turned and stared at Aelics. He was still laying on the floor, his fierce blue eyes staring at her. She half ran back to him and threw her arms around his head. She kissed his brow gently, secretly amused at his startled expression. “You are holy to me as well.”

The woman had already left the room, but returned when she’d realized that her charge was not with her. She was appalled by the scene. Dragyn Princesses were not supposed to kiss their Princes until their twenty-first year! “S’yelian!”

The girl released the Prince’s head and ran for the door.

That was the last time she saw him.
