How long is the fic you want to write? maybe use that to help yourself get back into writing?

I'm not sure how long it will end up being, probably novel length. The overarching plot will probably take that long to tell.

I am leaning towards the fanfic though, mostly because their is less characterization that needs to be done before I can start writing, and less world design. Also, I've had this idea since high school, although my ideas have gotten more detailed and changed a bit in the past year or so. I want to finally get it written.

My mean answer.

Instead of spending time thinking which to do. Just jump straight to do both of them together. Start getting things write down. If fanfic not working, then switch to NaNo. Until NaNo not working, then switch back again.

That's not a mean answer, it's good and practical advice. :)

It works? Hope it does.

The theory is to just put out words. Not necessary need to get attached to it, don't treat it like a proper attempt, just write what you thought of at that moment. You can erase them off if they don't fit later.

I've always struggled with just writing. It's hard for me not to try to find the perfect words to express the story I'm trying to tell. I'm not saying I'm not going to try, or that it's a bad idea... just that that has always been something that is difficult for me to do.

How do you write normally? computer or the old pencil way?

Some of both, depending on what I have available to me. During Nano I usually use a computer because I type faster then I write, and I can validate my word count without having to write and then type it in. Normally, I use pencil and paper for my rough draft, then when I type it in I do my first set of editing.

I can't even imagine how sore my hands would get writing a whole draft out in pen or pencil

I always write on rough paper. XD Then if I don't like it, I would just trash it.
If I like it, I would be so motivated and continue the draft it in computer~ there.

Moving for study, new university town . New house didn't have an internet connection until today though, so I have been doing a lot of writing. Got about 5k words done in the last five days. It's not nano levels of word count but it is good.

Typing is the easiest for validation purposes, but because it's more a personal challenge than anything you can do it anywhere.
