In the Dead of Night

The night was quiet. All that was heard was the scratch of rat claws on the pavement or against the metal of the garbage cans. The only light that shone into the dark alleyways was that of the full moon. I walked through these alleyways like I always did at night searching for something out of the ordinary. It was quite common that I did.

A shift of the shadows caught my attention as a noticed a slight struggle between a cloaked figure and a woman. I had expected this as always, wasn’t ever going to be a first for me. Slowly I approached eyeing the cloaked figure wearily and stopped dead in my tracks as I realize that he is feeding on the woman with a small gasp…

Jeremy woke with a jerk his body shooting up to sit upright and shaking. Why must these dreams always torment him? It was bad enough that his classmates called him a vampire due to his extraordinarily pale skin, black eyes with hints of red and black hair he allowed to grow down to his shoulders, but must he also dream of them? He hated the dreams, seeing so many young men and women prayed upon by a single vampire weekly sometimes twice a week even.

Wasn’t there supposed to be something about how you can’t constantly see the same person in your dreams? Especially when you don’t know the one you’re dreaming of? Jeremy had no recollection of the tall vampire and yet he constantly dreamed of him, not always feeding though, sometimes just walking around at night or going to clubs full of what Jeremy presumed was meant for vampires for others were there.

Jeremy pulled his long frame out of bed and went to look out the window staring at the full moon… It looked like the moon in his dream, but the moon always looks alike right? He found it strange that again he dreamt the dream having the same weather as on the night he dreamt it. It was rather disturbing to say the least. Jeremy closed his eyes to the full moon. Dwelling on the similarities only made things worse. Instead he opened the window and enjoyed the cool air that played across his bare skin, drying whatever sweat that remained on his body, he couldn’t relate the wind to the dream and that he was thankful for.

Vampires had been on his mind a lot since his first dream, how long ago it’s been he did not know. Sometimes it felt like he had the dreams for his whole life another it felt like almost a year, which was the more likely of the two. He didn’t believe in them but his dreams made it harder for him each day to actually keep himself from believing in them. He studied them more than he studied for school, his friend Alex once joked that they should have a class on vampires so at least Jeremy would be acing something. It wasn’t as if he didn’t care about other things though… just that the dreams bothered him that much. He wanted to put the combating thoughts of real or not to rest.

That’s why he made a plan one night while he waited for sleep to come to him, he’ll go out next week and find the alleyways he’s always been dreaming of, for they were always the same. He was going to find out if it was merely a dream or not and he knew he would continue to have the dreams until he found out… though he may still have them afterwards at least he would know that they’re not real. At least he tried to convince himself that they weren’t real.

“Are you crazy?” Alex asked Jeremy when he told him of the plan a couple days later. “Those alleyways are dangerous at night, and not because of so called vampires.”

“I have to know Alex, I’ve been getting worse sleeps each night,” Jeremy replied as he reached over the table and grabbed the second half of his friend’s sandwich. He’d forgotten his lunch and he was hungry.

“Chasing dreams is stupid Jeremy. They’re called nightmares, live with them,” Alex retorted with a face as Jeremy took a bite of the sandwich. “Everyone gets them, even seventeen year olds. You were supposed to get used to coping with them as a kid.”

“It’s not a normal nightmare though,” Jeremy protested after swallowing his mouthful.

“Yeah, yeah, the weather coincides with the night you dreamt it,” Alex said repeating what Jeremy had told him earlier. “Doesn’t prove a thing, just that your subconscious associated the night’s weather into your dream.

“Jeremy, you’ve been studying Vampires for months maybe even a year, of course you’re going to dream of ‘em!” Alex reasoned as he picked at his own half of the sandwich not minding that he had to share. “You’ve been studying them so long they’ll be on your mind at night as well.”

“You don’t get it Alex,” Jeremy replied his patience going a little thin, he’d explained this many times to Alex and he always had to repeat it. “I didn’t start studying them out of the blue. I started studying them because the dreams started a month or two before I even picked up a book on vampires.”

“A movie then, I don’t care,” Alex replied curtly tired of the conversation himself. “Reoccurring nightmares are common. It doesn’t matter if the weather changes or the vampire’s victim changes each time… It’s still the same dream and your subconscious picked it up from somewhere.”

“If you’re so worried, come with me then.” Jeremy said stubbornly, he’d already had many versions of the argument with himself and knew he was going to do it whether Alex liked it or not.

In the end Alex said no, but Jeremy knew Alex probably wouldn’t get any sleep until Jeremy phoned him to tell him he was alright. That in itself eased what little anxiety Jeremy had left in him about actually doing this.

The rest of the week passed without another dream, which Jeremy was secretly thankful for in case another one might have psyched him out of going. He wanted to know the truth though and he wouldn’t stop now that he had already snuck out of the house, his parents none the wiser.

The alleyways were as dark as his dreams portrayed them causing him to think that he city should add lights in them, there’d be less chance of attacks since most muggers like keeping to the shadows of the alleyways. The thought crossed his mind then left as soon as he found himself in the alleys he recognized from his dreams.

His gait slowed as he approached the alley the vampire was usually feeding in, but when Jeremy got there the alley was empty. No signs of old victims left to the elements to rot and decompose with bite marks on their necks, no sign of anything that could relate to his dreams either than the alleyways being the same.

A chuckle escaped his throat, after all that worrying and his dreams truly weren’t real? A little ironic, he should have just listened to Alex. Maybe he just enjoyed the thought that it might be real, to have something to be somewhat passionate about… It would have been best if he had just ignored this plan then.

A scream shattered his thoughts and he spun around to find himself staring at the man of his dreams. He looked to be an older version of Jeremy with pale skin a large hooked nose and long greasy black hair that flowed just passed his shoulders. His eyes were redder than Jeremy’s though, a deep crimson red that reminded Jeremy of blood. Jeremy stood frozen to the spot the moment he let himself believe he wasn’t real he turns up dragging his next struggling victim behind him with the ease it would take to hold a toddler from going anywhere.

“Who’re you?” The vampire asked his eyes narrowing as they took Jeremy in. The hand around the woman’s wrist let go and the woman fell to the ground with a squeak of surprise but ran away once she got her feet under her.

Jeremy took a step backwards fumbling for words. Unable to find any he closed his mouth. He watched the vampires meal run and knew that he was in trouble as the vampire took two long strides towards him and grabbed his arm. The grip was firm but it didn’t hurt Jeremy but all of a sudden the closeness of the vampire took the fear from him.

“Jeremy, I’ve been dreaming of you…” Jeremy blabbered looking up into cold eyes. From this close he could almost see the fangs’ outlines underneath the man’s lips.

The vampire drew Jeremy towards the wall, the one Jeremy had watched him feed on so many victims against and yet Jeremy didn’t struggle. Somehow this made sense to him as the vampire pressed his body against Jeremy’s. Jeremy could feel the wiry muscle of the man’s, as a vampire he had inhuman strength and Jeremy found it hard to breath.

“I know… I’ve been dreaming of you as well…” the whispered reply that sent shivers down Jeremy’s spine when he felt the man’s breath on his ear and neck.

“Please…” Jeremy gasped his hands gently groping against the man’s sides. “Tell me why… I don’t understand. What’s your name?”

A chuckle was the reply for a few moments as the man’s tongue trailed along the main artery in his neck. Jeremy arched his back gasping in what he can only describe as pleasure.

“My name is Julias,” the vampire replied with another chuckle. A light kiss to the ear and neck followed by a long one on the lips left Jeremy breathless as he tried to understand what was going on. “We’ve been dreaming of each other because you’re my… mate”

Jeremy blinked. He wasn’t very surprised by this information. He somehow knew it all along yet he needed to be told to remember it. He smiled and leaned forwards to kiss Julias once more, the kiss was eagerly returned.

“Jeremy…” Julias panted pulling away from the kiss only to nuzzle into his neck. Jeremy wasn’t frightened knowing that the bite would link them forever. “Don’t struggle, and don’t worry… You will only be turned after I finish feeding.”

Jeremy nodded. He stared up at the skies as he felt Julias’ teeth bite down and through his skin. A small cry escaped him, his was painful and yet… as he got used to it enjoyable. Closing his eyes he let his new lover feed without a struggle.

This is a tale about Leprechauns, it's a bit rushed because I only had two days to write it and could only do it in class. It didn't really turn out how I wanted it but I still like it.

Of Dealing with Tricksters and Cheats

At the beginning of time everything was peaceful, the townspeople had nothing to worry about. They’re children played in the fields of Ireland daily, whether it is hide-and-seek or tag was never a question until they got to the open country fields. The trees gave good coverage for them to be able to hide and the clearing outside of the small woods was excellent space to run unhindered by roots or leaves.

Leprechauns have been told in tales, some were told to be friendly and give out luck when asked kindly. Other tales told of leprechauns being nasty little buggers playing tricks on people who entered their woods and some of those tales told of leprechauns who injured and sometimes killed humans. Those tales were only spread amongst the adult population as to not to scare the children, but they knew the tales weren’t real after all. Leprechauns weren’t real.

Young Julie was playing in the woods by herself while the others played a varying form of hide-and-seek tag, in her good skirts she did not want to run around so she walked through the woods towards a stream she always watched the animals drink from on days like this, besides she was getting to old for such a game at eleven. The stream was a beautiful thing in summer; the plants were in full bloom and the flowers that lined the stream bed were always a beautiful mix of pinks reds and purples.

When she arrived to the stream though the flowers and shrubs were all torn up and there were two small creatures that looked much like little men were running around tearing up what was left to be torn up. Devastated Julie stepped forward with a cry of surprise.

“What are you doing!?” Julie yelled to the two small beings. “Why would you ruin such beauty?”

“Why young Missy,” replied one of the creatures of who Julie was surprised would reply in words understandable to her, “because we found it was quite ugly. As a home we need a place that we find beautiful.”

The little person’s smile was horrible and mocking, Julie was near tears at finding her escape to be ruined by… by… these things. Julie well knew that they were mocking her, enjoyed seeing that she was horrified by what they did to the floral around the stream. How could they not find it ugly now?

“What are you?” Julie asked her voice quivering.

“Why, we be leprechauns,” the same little man replied with little more than a bow. His smile grew even more mocking though as he approached her, she stumbled back tripping on an up turned shrubbery and fell to the dirt causing the leprechauns to laugh.

Julie moved in to hug him but Robby pushed her away, but what was thought as a light tap sent her stumbling and falling into the mud puddle.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but come see me when you’re normal,” Robby said with a cold look to his once wonderful features.

Julie was near tears and covered in mud to say the least. Pushing herself up she stormed back off to the stream to find Stingy. That was not luck at all! Some luck, she got covered in dirt, turned down and she ruined a friendship! What else would go wrong?

“You tricked me Stingy O’Neil!” Julie yelled at the leprechaun standing at the stream bed.

“I thought ye’d be returning soon,” Stingy said with and indifferent shrug.

“You said you’d give me luck!!” Julie yelled at him tears were streaming down her cheeks not only from hurt but from anger as well. “That was not luck!”

“Oh but I did give ye luck,” Stingy said with a mocking smile. “Depends how ye use it whether it go bad or not, ye got ta be careful with the luck I gave ye.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Julie asked hands on her hips.

“Why shoulda I had told ye?” Stingy asked, “Ye be demanding I prove me’self to ye, so I did w’ some restraints on me words, what ye did with the luck was up to ye. Sometime luck goes bad a bit is all.”

“But… I wanted good luck.”

“Ye don’t always get what ye want.”
