Broken Butterfly Wings (take two!=P)

Last time this got deleted because I had forgotten about my quizilla account so I'm trying this again. lol hope you guys aren't sick of this if you have read it already ^_^

Okay this is a story i have started and I'm into chapter two but I'm going to post what I've got on here on here. The chapter are kind of short but I felt I put more personality into this story and maybe it's helping that I'm using first person perspective for once but anyways here you go and please don't be shy to tell me to hang up my keyboard and go join the hobos hanging out at Publix. :^_^: :O_o: I don't actually want to be a hobo, it was just an exaggeration so please don't make me go to Publix:sweat:

P.S. This is going to be a Vampire Romance story in modern times with some lame atempts at comedy. So BE FOREWARNED!

All my life I have been in the shadows. It is expected when living in a lush valley. What wasn't hidden by the mountain shadow was hidden by the massive, ancient trees growing in their valleys. I never minded the shadows much, in fact I liked them. They helped hide things that didn't want to be seen. Things like myself.

What can I say I always was that girl no one noticed in the halls and streets. My mother said I was beautiful inside and out and that the others just couldn't appreciate me for what I truly was. I would always reply, "What the quiet, weird girl who is always humming, whom some think should be a psych ward?" My mother wouldn't accept that I accepted who I was and was glad the others barely glanced at me. People looking at me made me uncomfortable.

However my mother sent me to my aunt's camp in New York over the summer to work as a counselor in hopes I might gain confidence and maybe a few friends. Let's say her plan worked, whether I like it or not. The girls over there forcefully gave me a make over that changed me completely and now I can't change back or rather I can't bring myself to.

My once dull, straight, black hair is now beautiful long dark curls that look raven in the light. My eye brows are plucked to put a super model to shame. My once pale cheeks now have color from bronzer and blush. My newly found skills with eye liner and eye shadow has brought out my surprisingly stunning hazel eyes that are enough to make any man melt. My lips are shined and cute earrings hang from my ears. Finally, my clothes match and compliment my complexion and body shape. When I look in the mirror I see a completely different girl, one I'm proud of. The transformation, however, is not complete.

"El you look great! Why are you moping?!" My mother proceeded to patronize me in the car ride home from the small fly trap that was our airport. She had the same pout on her face as she does when trying to get one of her stubborn hairs to lay flat in the bun she wears her frizzy, amber hair in everyday. Her grip was firm around the steering wheel she was hunching over.

"I'm not moping..." I mumbled and added, "I'm thinking about how I'm going to have to explain to everyone that I'm not a new girl, just different." I shrugged indifferently at the subject for my mother's sake but really I was dreading the very thought of going back to school. Mom gave me a suspicious look but I was back to looking out the window at the passing landscape so I could not return her gaze.

My home town really was timeless. An entire summer had gone by and nothing looked as if it had changed besides the temperature. The trees still looked just as untouchable as when I had left and were still as tall as some of the buildings in New York City I'd seen passing through there. There were still endless hills and ominous cliffs. There were still the ever present clouds, today they were thin, misty and only a few dotted the sky. It was a beautiful day and the little sunlight that wasn't blocked yet bled through the leaves, giving an earthy, emerald glow. There was only enough breeze to ruffle the blades of grass and most of the flowers were still in full blossom from spring.

I longed to get out of this car and go find a comfortable tree branch to lay idly on. I looked over at my mom to ask something but stopped when I saw her smiling-no not smiling, glowing. The contents of my stomach churned uncomfortably. She had another one of her surprises waiting at home, I could feel it and I couldn't help but remember last time she had had a surprise for me.

I had just come back from a trip to visit my aunt for two weeks and my mother blind folded me in the car. She had spun me around several times to get me dizzy and then walked me- or more marched me through the house and around the house to confuse me before finally stopping in the backyard. Lucky me, my dear mother had taken it upon herself to throw a luau. Oh everything was fine... Until one of the tiki torches set the porch on fire. The ceiling and walls are still scorched and smell of burnt pork to this very day.

I decided to try and get an early warning before tempting fate. "Mom... You're not... Planning anything for me when I get home right?" I asked timidly with a grasp on the car door's handle for a quick escape.

She looked at me surprised at first but slowly that changed to embarrassment. Color rushed to her cheeks as it left mine. "Well honey you've been gone for nearly a month now and while you were gone -"

"Let me know now, is there any fire involved?" I cut in quickly.

"No but-"

"Sharpe objects?"

"No really there's-"

"Carnies?"

"No sweetheart, I promise there is nothing waiting for you at the house that's dangerous. Just some new neighbors..." She said in a rush to get all the information out before I could interrupt again. Little did she know that the most dangerous thing in the world was waiting back home for me.

Hope you enjoyed this little snip it! ^_^ I'll add more later if anyone wishes it. Now that you've read it though all i ask is you do not quote it in this topic! lol well I'll be checking in regularly for your thoughts!

With love,
-Valnea-

Chapter 1

Yup I'm impatient so here we go with the first chapter. This one has a bit of comedy in it :whee:

"El... We're here." My mother said, gently rocking me awake. My eyes fluttered opened just to be squeezed shut again as I yawned. Somewhere during the two hour drive from the airport to my house I had fallen asleep. It was cloudier now and I could feel the thick moisture in the air. It was going to rain .

My bones cracked as I hurriedly got out of the car. I almost lost my balance on one of my stiff legs as the other got caught on the seatbelt. Luckily with a few hops I was free and able to regain my balance. I could hear my mother giggling while she continued to try and pop the trunk using the small remote on the keys. My cheeks burned a little with embarrassment but I came to her side. I took the liberty of counting how many tries it took her to get the two sensors of the remote and in the trunk to line up and arrived at the number 26.

After grabbing my bag I smiled at my mother. "It needs new batteries in case you're wondering." She made a face and mocked me as she walked ahead to unlock the front door. I giggled at her childish behavior and began to heave me excessively heavy bag down our drive way when I heard his voice.

"Hey, you need some help with that?" An unfamiliar voice said coming toward me from behind. I turned around and felt my cheeks burn as if they were on fire. He was the most handsome guy I have ever seen in my life. His eyes were bright red like rubies. His hair was a platinum blonde that shone like sunlight, even in the bleak weather we were having at the moment. His skin was pale but almost seemed to radiate as it looked so smooth and flawless. His walk was so graceful I could have sworn a ghost was coming towards me. Is that what he was? A ghost?

He stopped in front of me and patiently waited for my answer. The words I was trying to communicate were stuck in my throat and ended up a choked mess along the line of, "N-...I...c....ou...n't...uhhh." In the end I was left with nothing to do but nod. He fought a smile but did not succeed very well, making me blush even harder. He ignored my rosy cheeks and picked up the suitcase that I had been struggling with a few seconds earlier, like it were a bag of tea.

As I watched in awed silence he began to walk down the driveway, the old latch on my suitcase was coming undone, little by little, step by step. We both did not know of the mortifying events that were about to take place.

"You know you don't have to do that I could take those in." I said, surprising myself. Since when did I use full, comprehendible sentences around guys like him? A little voice in the back of my head said 'since you became in their league.' I almost rolled my eyes openly before I noticed he was looking at me as shocked by my statement as I was.

"It's fine. This is easy for me and besides, I wouldn't want you to break a nail." His smile made shivers run up my arms and butterflies go crazy in my stomach. Something that wonderful could not be real or at least not human.

I mocked being overly grateful saying teasingly, "Oh my savior!" We both laughed together, his was as smooth as honey but it sounded a little cold as well. The coldness bothered me a bit so my laughing died away but I kept smiling to be polite. "So does my savior have a name?"

"Yes, it is Riel. Does my damsel have a name as well?" His voice made my insides melt. Why did he have to be so charming?

"Yes it is Eleanor but everyone just calls me El." I held my hand out for him to shake. "It's nice to meet you Riel." He grasped my hand with his free hand and shook mine. His skin was cold and rock solid. It felt almost like shaking a statues hand. I instinctively rubbed my hands together to warm them up and get rid of the strange sensation in my hand. Then there was a foreign clipping sound as our meeting went sour.

It happened in a blink of an eye. I watched with horror as the latch to my suitcase came undone and my belongings spilled every where, frozen to the spot. He could see every single one of my clothing items including my bras underwear, dorky shirts, and a few unrecognizable items. The worst of all was one of my lacy thongs had some how landed right on his shoe. It's small rhinestones sparkled in the light and it's light violet color seemed to glow like his skin. By the time every item of clothing had hit the ground I was scarlet and I was trying to figure out how to book the next flight to China.

He raised his eyebrows and turned toward me smirking, bent down, and casually picked up my under garment between his thumb and index finger and held it up. "Lose something miss El?" His voice wasn't teasing or agitated but that didn't stop the question to pierce right through me.

My eyes went wide and I rushed forward to snatch it. Unfortunately I wasn't paying attention and tripped on one of my sweaters. One foot had managed to get caught in it's turtle neck while my other foot was on it's sleeves. I staggered a moment but before I knew it I was sprawled on my driveway with possibly one of the hottest guys in the world holding my underwear above my head.

Home, sweet home.... I thought with some bitter humor. This for some strange reason made me laugh. At first it was a light chuckle but slowly it grew louder and I was laughing until my lungs were sore. Apparently he had joined in too because when I was done he was still trying to calm down. Groaning I sat up and smiled at him.

"Sorry about that. It's an old suitcase and I had crammed it with a month's worth of clothes and other stuff." I apologized blushing again. I held my hand out to take the underwear back from him, trying my best not to shake from embarrassment. A light breeze came through t he area making lose strands of hair brush past my cheeks toward him.

His body grew rigid and his eyes seemed to flash from ruby to crimson. I watched confused, still stupidly holding my hand out for the thong. "Are you all right?" I asked moving to get up. His head snapped toward me and I could see he had his teeth clenched. He stood there unmoving, looking like a god's statue for the longest time. At one point I wasn't even sure if he was breathing. I opened my mouth to ask again when he cut in.

"I have to go." His voice was slightly harsh, making me drop my hand in shock. I watched as he rushed away still gripping my violet thong. It began to rain almost the second he was gone but I still did not move. I just sat there in the rain looking at the spot where my perfect ghost had disappeared.

By the time I was inside me and the rest of my belongings were thoroughly soaked. The squishing of the water in my sneaker alerted my mother of my presence. She snorted at my appearance when we met in the kitchen. "Have fun with our new neighbor?" She asked smiling at me while I rung the water out of my raven hair.

"He's one of the new neighbors! Oh my god..." I squeezed my eyes shut and wanted to scream. My experience with talking to people was not going very well. "I'm going to get in my PJs..."

I moodily went up the stairs to my room. It looked the same as when I left except a little emptier. My queen sized bed still had it's purple and navy butterfly quilt on it. My windows still had their thin white curtains hanging loosely from the pole. The off-white shag carpet sparkled slightly with the glitter that was scattered from the glitter fight I had had with my mother when I was six. My dresser had been cleared so I could clearly see all the nail polish and make up stains on it. The mirror still had dozens of pictures tucked in the sides. My walls were covered in the photos I had taken and a few posters of my favorite bands and singers. In my closet there were a few trophies dimly shining in the light. My book shelf was filled to the brink with books and my stereo rested off in the middle of it.

I let out a sigh and walked to the stereo and turned on some music. The song was just the kind I needed to calm me down. I smiled at my good luck and walked to the dresser. I only had one set of sleep wear in there and it was my small silk shorts with little frogs on them and a white tank top. Once I was finished changing I walked to the window and sat in my fuzzy fold up chair.
My eyes became fixed on what I saw in the other window. It was my ghost, fighting with who appeared to be his brother. Using my remote I turned down the music and listened to the muffled argument.

"WHY DID WE MOVE TO THIS HOUSE? THERE WERE PLENTY OF OTHERS AND THEY DIDN'T HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE!" Riel yelled, thrusting his arms up in the air. Did he have the same problem as me? He didn't like people?

"We have to get used to being in contact with them if we're going to make this work. Listen I know it's going to be hard for you but this is the life we have chosen and you're going to have to deal with it." His brother said calmly.

"Damn right it's going to be hard for me! Especially with her living next door to me!" I felt a pang of hurt in my heart when he mentioned me. I had to glance through the window to see his expression. He looked scary when he was angry and beads of sweat formed on my forehead despite the fact that my mother had the air conditioning at 68 degrees. His eyes were crimson again and his face had wrinkles from his frown and furrowed eyebrows.

"You seemed to be getting along with her fine in the beginning." His brother said arching his eyebrows. He had a small smile on his face as his brother became angrier. My cheeks started to burn again as the blush returned. I could see my thong on one of the near by tables.

"Yes that was before I smelled her! I still had the smell of lawn pesticides in my nose until that breeze carried her scent towards me. Do you know how hard it was for me?" He asked, his voice becoming softer. Something strange was going on here. I wasn't sure what it was but I knew that my neighbors definitely had a secret.

Riel's brother placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled when suddenly he turned towards me, his eyes wide. I gasped and scrambled to look like I was doing something but it was too late. He had seen me and I had a feeling that I had seen and heard something I wasn't suppose to. Riel's brother would become a ghost haunt me later that evening.

:XDCHAPTER 2!:XD

There was a cold feeling on my lips, like an ice pack were being pushed against them. Slowly I opened my eyes and I could see what was laying across my mouth. I tried to scream but his hand held fast. Instinctively, I clawed at his arm trying to get free. He just chuckled and grabbed one of my wrists shushing me.

"Calm down, I'm only here to talk." He whispered in the dark looking down upon me as if I were some little kid throwing a tantrum. I glared back at him but stopped my thrashing. Huffing a sigh I crossed my arms like I was Four -years-old to show I wouldn't try to hit anymore.

"You can take your hand off my mouth." I grumbled into his palm but it sounded more like "roo mam may or mann orf I moufffff" Riel's brother smiled at me and took his hand away from my mouth. "What are you doing in my room? Wait better yet how did you get in my room?"

"I have my ways and as I told you before I'm only here to talk." His answered patiently but I couldn't help but feel he was on edge like his brother had been when he had dropped off my... Item of clothing. "I see you don't like to beat around the bush. "

"More like I have a habit of asking the obvious like you live right next door right?" My mood was surprisingly light. I just could not bring my self to be afraid of the red headed replica of Riel. Slowly I sat up and he backed away to give us both space. I was painfully aware of my bed head hair but I would seem incredibly vain if I brushed my hair in the middle of the night for him so I stayed put fighting the urge to smooth my hair.

He nodded and I could of sworn I saw a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Wow, you're very observant as well." He said sarcastically, making my cheeks burn slightly with embarrassment. The littlest slights seemed to get to me. He let out a sigh and added so I could barely hear, "Perhaps that is the problem..."

I sat there thinking for a moment before getting up and silently walking to my bookshelf. I pressed the power button to the stereo and listened as classical music softly drifted through the air. I met his questioning gaze with a small smile. "To keep my mom from getting suspicious and cover our voices. Trust me if she heard me talking to a guy at this time of night in my room, she would come armed and dangerous." He could not hide his smile any longer and his perfect white teeth glistened in the dim moonlight. "So what exactly was it you wanted to talk about?"

"I wanted to talk to you about my brother.... And you. I think it is best if you two keep your distance." His voice was a little hesitant, which I picked up on almost immediately.

"Listen, I know he told you how he ended up bringing the neighbor's daughter's thong home. Do you honestly think that I'm counting every second to see him again so that maybe he can bring a bra home next?" At this he smiled again though it was a bit weaker than the last one. "Don't worry about me and him. More than likely I would have been avoiding him without your little visit. Of course it's nice that now I actually have an excuse."

"Even if that is all true I still urge you to keep your distance. My brother.... Trust me when I say you would end up getting hurt." His words stirred more suspicion and mystery in me then I could stand. All my muscles seemed to tense. Was there a hidden message in that?

"I trust your word." The words came easily but I still wanted to say more. I wanted to scream at him 'WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?' but I knew better. As such I merely switched my gaze to something-anything to get my attention else where.

The small pitter patter of pouring rain became audible. I sighed and went to the window. Without a word I opened it knowing full well it was already unlatched. Cold, tiny droplets hit my hand until a small puddle formed in my palm.

He watched, his expression showing his confusion. "May I ask what you're doing?"

A smile tugged at my lips as I closed my eyes. "I'm collecting the rain to wash away unwanted thoughts. A small trick my mother taught me to help me get over my father. I've always loved the rain you know... I guess I always thought of it as a chance to bring a new beginning the next day where maybe my future will be a little bit clearer..."

"That's a very poetic interpretation. Do you write?"

"No do you?" Personally I couldn't stand the stuff but I didn't want to offend him if he did.

"No I find no pleasure in writing in riddles for other's pleasure." He was no longer looking at me but at the rain. "I don't see how you could get something so complex out of the tiny drops of water. It just seems so- What?"

I attempted to conceal my giggles with my hand but I couldn't stop so I just let it show until I spoke. "I'm sorry. You just remind me of my Dad when I listened to him and my Mom disagree on stuff like this. The only difference is you're much more-.... Uh, forget I said anything, it was rude of me to laugh."

"You know you'll drive people insane doing that." He said softly.

I looked at him with what I'm sure would be classified under a dumb-blond-expression, "What? Doing what?" Uh, oh. The butterflies were taking flight in my stomach again. Was I doing something weird or annoying all ready?

"Starting to speak from your heart and then just stopping and taking it all back. There is nothing wrong with speaking what's on your mind." Then he smiled in a way where I could almost believe he was my father. I looked down and bit back my tears. There was no way I was getting all worked up over something as simple as that.

I force a laugh and gave him a light punch that I'm sure would have bruised my hand if I had done it harder. Ignoring my shock I continued teasingly, "Fine mister smarty pants then speak your mind right now."

"You look like a total mess and part of your shorts is caught in your underwear." He said maddeningly calm. Suddenly I felt like an empty shell and I wished that I could just be washed away by the rain pouring outside my window at that moment.

"What is it with underwear today." I grumbled, casually pulling at my short bottoms. I turned my attention back to him, "Fine, I think you're a perv who sneaks into girl's rooms at night just for fun."

He smiled sweetly at me. "No that's just you." (I practically fell over at this point)

"Wow, now I feel special..... You're not skilled in breaking through metal bars are you?" I eyed him suspiciously making him laugh.

"Unfortunately, no....." He sighed and glanced back at the window. "Well I'm sorry to disappoint you but this Perv need to make his exit."

"Yes, it's just devastating." Drama was never my strong point but I'd say I was right on queue this night.

"Good bye, El. I just have one more piece of advice to give." He looked directly into my eyes giving me the feeling of falling almost instantly. "Keep out of the wind."

He was about halfway down the side of my house when I realized something. "HEY! Wait! What's your name?"

He smiled up at me again and said in a voice so charming that it rivaled his brothers almost to a pin point, "Darian."

Then once again one of my mysterious neighbors disappeared out of sight.
