The Colorado Wolf Pack Part 1

I began typing this story for my first period English class, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I enjoy typing it. I know there're some mistakes and I'll edit them at another time.

This story is based upon a real life situation in Colorado. It's expected that wolves will wander in from Yellowstone to Colorado in about ten years from now and it's been decided to wait for that time to come for study purposes. In this story, it's been decided to allow captive wolves to be reintroduced to Colorado.

Comments and critiques are appreciated. :)

The Colorado Wolf Pack

Part 1

The four crates were set horizontally from left to right, and evenly. “I don’t think we should be doing this…” Erika adjusted her glasses and thought for a moment. “Reintroducing wolves this way will take away the learning edge we need for learning wolf behavior.”
Wolf reintroduction in Colorado has been a big issue and it was originally found best to wait until wild wolves migrated to Colorado for study purposes. “I know how you feel but you and I both know that it will most likely take at least ten years for a wolf to migrate here on its own and besides, I’m sure some wolves will still migrate to a different location in Colorado anyway.” Although he didn’t show it, Carlos also felt uncertain about such a reintroduction, especially this early on when poachers may be able to avoid the law that protected wolves. Erika shivered as a cold breeze blew past and she looked over at the four crates.

All four wolves that will be released here were bred and raised together in captivity, but they were taught survival methods such as how to howl and what type of howling works for different situations and of course, to be afraid of humans. But they will have to learn how to hunt on their own.

Carlos put his arm on Erika’s shoulder, “Are you ready?” She nodded without giving him any eye contact and stood behind a crate; as did the other two men and Carlos. Carlos put his hand on the latch, “Alright, let’s do this.” He and the three others opened the latches and backed up into the trucks to watch.

The first to come out was a rather large grizzled grey wolf with orange – yellow eyes with a dirty black radio collar fashioned on his large neck. He sniffed curiously and cautiously as he slowly edged his way out of his crate with his tail held high – twitching sporadically as he sniffed and listened to the sounds and scents of this new world. “Ah, so it’s Charlie who is the first to emerge…and to think it only took less than five minutes for him too.” Carlos smirked. Erika couldn’t help but smile at this as well. The second to emerge was a slightly smaller female black wolf with dark blue eyes and her own dirty black radio collar as well. Seeing her mate exploring gave her the courage to slowly step out of her crate and join Charlie in his exploration. Happy to see his mate, and with his nerves calmed a bit from her presence, he lowered himself to a more submissive position and licked under her muzzle excitedly. Although Charlie was a bit larger than Blue, the female wolf was a bit more dominant and aggressive, giving her the highest rank in the pack. Feeling reassured by the presence of the two alpha wolves, Yip-Yip and Koda emerged. The white, mustard yellow eyed wolf Yip-Yip and his twin brother, Koda, a grey beta ranking wolf with bright blue eyes, emerged cautiously out of their crates. The twins stayed close together, both standing erect with their ears scanning the area – twitching at every little sound.

“Well I guess it’s time for us to leave now. It’s almost midnight and it’s over an hour’s drive back.” Carlos yawned and stretched his arms out. But the words meant nothing to Erika who sat by him in the passenger seat of the truck. “What if the wolves don’t learn to hunt in time? Winter is only in a couple months and they could starve…” Carlos looked over at her with a worried expression on his face. “Look,” He finally said reassuringly. “When they get hungry enough, they will learn and we can occasionally checkup on them by helicopter with those nifty radio collars they have on, and if we think the wolves are not put up for this, we can tranquilize them and take them back. There, now does that make you happy?” Erika stayed silent and only looked down at the floor in front of her. After what felt like a long silence, Carlos took out the walkie-talkie and announced to the other two men that they could now leave. At that they all started their trucks almost at once. The wolves were use to the sounds of trucks but the sudden noise spooked them and they stared at the trucks alertly with their ears and tails completely erect. The wolves watched as the trucks slowly drove away until they were no longer in their sights; leaving the crates and wolves completely alone in their new world.

--- End of Part 1

Part 2 should be finished in a few days. :)

This is really off topic;

I will be trying to work at the wolf reserves in the mountains of Boulder, CO next summer so that I can help out in the filming and studying when the movements happen.
I live in CO, btw.
