This was a performance piece for my poetry class. Anyway im not sure how well it goes over just being read, because its meant for stylistic changes and what not, but here it is anyway. This is title 'great'.

I spend a lot of time
hearing about the insignificance
of my generation.
We weren’t in Normandy
we didn’t go to the moon
we didn’t fight the war in ‘nam
or fight against it.

My generation love our lives
in posh houses
and behind computer screens
the baby boomers have to take classes
to deal with us
our egocentric nature
getting in late, multi-tasking

We don’t even see
as the world passes us by
from our couches
with our Wii controllers
what do you expect
from a generation deemed
millennial?

Piercing
ears
brows
lips
belly buttons
and places deemed inappropriate
by our school board.

The mall is our war
as the shoes are sold out,
the new game gone,
the chick from the other clique
kissing your boyfriend
then there are boys kissing boys?
what would Jesus say?

My grandfather frowns at my dress
as I wear ‘dungarees’
that’s what the factory workers wore
the place he strived to get away from
his granddaughter emulates
No grandpa, these aint dungarees
these are jeans.

Foolish
Silly
Stupid
Idiotic
These all mean the same thing?
how should I know?
I was texting in English.

Culture?
the most I know of culture
was my trip to Jamaica
the Villa on the beach
and the ghost mansion,
I didn’t even see beside the road
the naked people in boxes.

and I watch those infomercials
The guy holding the child
save this kid?
I know my money goes into rich pockets
but it looks like Im doing good donating,
I pretend I don’t know the old guy
is paying to sleep with that little girl.

Are we failures,
right now definitely.
Ecstasy, Weed, and Alcohol
Seriously?
Party Hard, think later
or never as the case seems

The thing you don’t know is...

I will be the man standing in front of tanks
I will be the woman studying chimpanzees
I will be the starving searching for peace
I will be the helping hand at the Soup Kitchen
I will be the doctor doing heart surgery on the homeless child
I will be great,
just give me the chance.
