I don't usually do poems, as a warning. However, I have a knack at rhyming things, which makes the meter fun to play around with. I wrote this one at like three in the morning on the last day on the deadline for a contest.

MISTAKE

They say I’m special,
Just like gold,
Offered job, good pay,
I’m sold.

It seems so wrong,
But I do what I’m told.
My heart, the gun,
Equally cold.

Some will beg,
Some will cry.
I follow my orders,
All must die.

Tanks roll in,
The furnace stopped.
It’s over fast,
The jig is up.

Orders shouted,
Foreign, I shrug.
A kick, a shove,
I’m in the mud.

I try to stand,
They kick me back.
A blow to my head,
All is black.

When I wake,
I’m in a cell.
Frightened, cold,
This must be hell.

All of us,
Guilty, hated.
Kicked and starved,
Violated.

But plans are made,
Voices heard.
I smile, I laugh.
Escape? Absurd.

After lunch,
My mad dash.
Razor wire,
Another gash.

At the forest,
No searchlight lit.
No one around,
I have made it.

At the town,
Appointments set.
Clothes are changed,
Demands are met.

I’m all paid up,
There’s another me.
Papers, cards,
Identity.

I’ll never tell,
My secret sins.
Trains, planes,
New life begins.

For many years,
I have been sought.
The door burst open,
I now am caught.

I climb the steps,
Approach the rope.
It’s gentle swaying,
The end of hope.

The trapdoor opens,
A gasp, a kick.
It was the end,
My death is quick.

Oh so very World War 2-esque ^.^ You have a wonderful style, the short quips and fast pace make it a very easy read. I wonder though.. Was your subject a German, English or American soldier?

In any case, I'm very fond of your poem and I hope you placed well in the contest because you very much deserve it.
